The MAC 1500 was McIntosh's first stereo receiver, it debuted in 1965! It's a hybrid amplifier with a solid state preamp section, tube output section and FM tuner. This one was on loan from Audio Classics, www.audioclass...
BTW, the McIntosh book is available for list price, $150, from Audio Classics www.audioclass...

So it seems that vintage audiophile receivers like the Mac 1500 have got the audio"feel" part down. I've always admired McIntosh audio equipment and so glad they are still in business the same way as they always have.

Nice to see that old Mac. Reminds me of my old Fisher 500B FM receiver I used to use back in late seventies through early eighties. All tubes (16 of them!) and sounded fantastic, even with a CD player, when that came along in the early 80s.....................great video!

Vintage audio used the common hookups and that was screw terminals for barrier strips. Only in later decades do we begin to see optional hookup choices becoming available on the contemporary gear in successive decades. Now some of the new connectors are promising higher quality signal connects. They likely do but the price is significantly higher over the simple spade connectors on vintage gear. In the analog days of McIntosh Mac Receivers (not to be confused with Apple Macintosh “Mac” products and that’s a whole “‘nuther” topic.) Great Episode Steve. The current Covid Society we find ourselves in yet again is advantageous to a real audiophile. Being home we can re-focus on audio and we have more opportunities for listening to our favorites and maybe even re-discover some lesser played recordings, refreshing our audio palette and re-discovering qualities we may have missed before. Season’s Greetings to You, Mrs. Steve, and ALL your regular followers and visitors to your channel. Stay safe. (PS - Let me guess, Santa is bringing you new cool shirts under your Cornwalls 😂)

All mid 1970s purchased equipment. Just purchased the new Tea for the Tiller Man Cat Stevens remix / reissue, I swear it is as quiet as a cd. No surface noise, clicks or pops, not sure how they did it, but it can be done.

Hanging onto an old Marantz 2235B and I use the FM tuner all the time. I also play records on it and it sounds pretty good. We put a bluetooth receiver into the AUX jack (a decent one) --- I know that's a sin but it did mean we started using the receiver that much more in daily life. Watching live streaming concerts, streaming radio stations nationwide, using streaming services, etc. It's a great receiver.

An acquaintance asked me to "go over" his early-70s C-28/MC2505 combo. It was... imprecise... but I liked the sound and found McIntosh still supportive when I had difficulty finding the big half-a-coke-can power caps. They weren't cheap, but they had 'em.

I remember buying my first system. It was at a McIntosh dealer in Ottawa Canada in the early 80's. It was all mesmerizing. (I got thrown out of the store for drooling on the display items) No, I didn't get any McIntosh gear but I did get a Mission Cyrus Two, a Rega Planar and Avid speakers (whatever happened to them?). I still use the Avids. The salesman was Saxe Brickenden who's made quite a name for himself in the industry. Nicest salesperson ever.

I have long listened to an electronic ‘space music’ show on college radio in Philly. There’s another station that is all classical and jazz. Their audio quality was excellent until the advent of digital HD radio. It’s great for the car, but they have to compress the analog signal to open up bandwidth for the HD feed. This is true for most stations now. The upshot is you can’t really assess the quality of an analog tuner like you used to. Time marches on, but I do miss the sound of a really good analog FM signal. It could be really great.. even magical, when your signal was strong. I get the best sound streaming the station online now.
@marcgabor9690

Yeah I miss how my local college station (KXLU in los angeles) was 3db quieter than all the other stations and a little veiled sounding. That's how I knew I was listening to real independent radio. Once I compensated with my volume dial that FM transmission created a haze that glued all the tracks together and made even the crappiest sounding demos sound like they were coming from the same "house". If you think I'm being sarcastic, I'm not. Just like people love vinyl I love FM radio despite all it's shortcomings. When a DJ comes up with a really great tracklist in response to whatever they are feeling at the moment and it gets beamed out to everyone within a certain radius and it all has this sound signature and you know it's happening right now and never again it's really a wonderful experience that can't be replicated in any other way.

I love old integrated amps and some recievers, but they're not for people afraid to open up the amp. You will be spraying out pots at a minimum, and more likely than not, replacing capacitors and other aged items. The tube compliment should be considered too, or the transistor compliment. Some tubes are quite hard to find nowadays, particularly in matched sets. Some transistors are nearly impossible to source if they happen to blow. The Mac shown here uses 7591 tubes, and has an original USA Sylvania set. There are 7591 tubes in production again now in Russia, but in the 90s and early 2000s you couldn't find them anywhere at even a remotely reasonable price. For that reason, you should avoid amps that use 7868 output tubes, or count on covnerting them over to 7591 with new sockets. My favorite integrated of all time has to be the Sherwood S-5000. One of the sweetest sounding integrated amps of all time. 24W of 7189 (mil 6BQ5) glory with all Telefunken 12AX7 preamp section from the factory. But again, you better be used to working on your own gear if you want to have one of these as part of your main system.

I am reminded of all of the “The Fisher” tube receivers of the 60s. They were the hot (npi) thing to have then and well into the 80s. They are still sought out these days. Why? No clue. They are pretty crude devices. And it’s amazing how bad receiver speaker connectors were until the turn of the century.

Good timing on this since I recently got an early-70’s MA6100 from Audio Classics. They were great to work with and can attest to their packing. Funny since I was using an HH Scott 299a and found it clearer, more precise than the MA6100 on the phono. Wouldn’t think so since the Scott is tube and late-50’s model, and the MA6100 solid state and a tad newer. Both through Klipsch RP8000F’s. I know it’s a little apples to oranges. Maybe I’m crazy, don’t know.

I find it interesting that that receiver has hiss on FM stereo and phono. In 1966 my parents got a all solid state Zenith console that sounded way better than any other console back then , it had 15 inch woofers 6and 3 inch midranges and 2 inch tweeters. It reproduced high frequencies well for it's day but it did not have hiss on strong FM stations or phono. Reel to reel tape did sound best on the rear tape inputs.

Hi Steve. Any thoughts on upgrading from my 1990's NAD 7100 and Snell Acoustics Type K/II system. Love the slightly warm but detailed sound. I'm in a 14' x 11' listening space. $5000 initial budget. Totally good to upgrade a bit at a time (new or used). More of an acoustic, dynamic music kind of listener. Thanks for an suggestions :)

The problem is the price range. There’s no doubt new is better. But at a given budget, people who want a nice sound may opt for vintage. If you’re a “serious” audiophile money is probably not really a concern anyways. At 200$? Theres no new gear that can match a vintage receiver... Obviously you might say it will not last long. But for the casual listener, the receiver won’t be worn out that fast, and a few years plus some tinkering it will be worth it! Yes, you have to tinker but its rly no bother. Easy to learn and very fun as a hobby. So I will 9/10 times recommend vintage as I don’t rly hang out with audiophiles i hang out with normal ppl :p btw I’m not an old nostalgic guy... im 21 and finishing college, and have a solid amount of experience with old and new gear.

Great little video, Steve. Its interesting how some of that vintage look is coming back with products like the new Yamaha integrateds. There is definitely something appealing about chunky knobs and clunky switches. So tell me, if I wanted to get myself one of those vintage macs ( I don't but just interested ) how much would it set me back ?

Have a pair of Sherwood 5000 stereo integrated amps running each mono into Quad 57s. I had a tech go through the Sherwoods and replace the caps and the selenium rectifier (I think). The phono stage is dead quiet with my SOTA Comet. Very overlooked amp IMHO and still a value at around $500 - $750 re capped.

MAC1500 is my favorite sounding McIntosh of all- specs be damned. Hiss is negligible w/ 90 dB speakers; slight resonant hum from PT only when installed cabinet. Tuner selectivity doesn't rank with the finest Mc standalone tuners but otherwise sounds 99% as good on strong stations. Tuning flywheel feel is the best in any Mc product I've encountered.

I also wonder was the Fm and phono section recapped. I have upgraded both a Fisher 400 and 800c phono and Fm sections with orange drops and pio capacitors. My Fm on a good night sounds almost like a CD. My phono section is great and dead quiet.

I saw the Pixies a couple of times in Detroit-great band! Anyhow, I too enjoy my tuner for a couple of stations/music programs, but in all the recent reviews of integrated amps I've seen there is none. I am currently using an Adcom 400 Tuner w/the 535 Amp, but one day I might want to upgrade-to what? Any ideas out there?

I've heard that the old HH Scott tuners from the 1950's are killer! Rumor has it that you can actually get better than CD quality sound out of them, if the broadcast signal is good enough. I've never heard one myself, though. P.S.: Integrated amps, by their nature, exclude tuners. : )

Any opinion on whether these receivers - or other vintage equipment - are a good fit with recapped 1970/71 KLH model 30 acoustic suspension speakers? Currently using 1990s era Kenwood surround receiver as a two channel stopgap, but it can be harsh at times. Looking for a good option, vintage or new, that would make the KLHs the best version of themselves. Thanks.

If you find one that's well-sorted, yes! I recently rebuilt an old Kenwood receiver from ca. 1963 with 6BQ5 output tubes (aka EL84) and I use it with a pair of Original Large Advents. It sounds glorious, and the Advents are very similar in design to your KLHs. If you're not in a huge room and you find a good, clean vintage unit, I say go for it.

Stay away from Kenwood receivers from the late Seventies. I had one (don't recall the model), and when I upgraded my speakers, I could hear that it had a harsh, grainy sound. Replaced it with a Yamaha rx-570, which sounded much better.

I have a Harman Kardon PM665VXi. I am considering purchasing the Klipsch RP-600m. Does the combination work well or should I invest in a new amplifier? I have no experience with HiFi so recommendations are very much appreciated.

I would put the coin in MX110 as 1500, 1700, 1900 are OK. The King is Marantz 7C/8B...Scott and Fisher for the 60's are excellent also. 70's the Mac 4100 SS (Pound for Pound Mac 70's best receiver). Luxman C1010, M2000, M4000, M6000 and L100u for the 70's are sound beasts.
