The “Power amp in” comes handy when you have a separate AV receiver and want to beef-up your mains L/R using pre-amp output and/or use a single set of speakers. Since AVR don’t always sound so good, you don’t compromise your music experience in 2 channel audio…and ease up on AVR power for the center and surrounds….

I really enjoyed this review. This little amp sounds like it might be a hit. Steve's description of the DAC section reminds me of the DAC section in my Denon pma 1600ne which has a very sweet sound, but is not as detailed as some of the DACS coming out of China. However, the sweet sound is addictive and I can listen to it for hours. Digital has come a long ways.

Steve, regarding that David Bowie album, I obtained the CD and, as I always do these days, immediately ripped and opened the tracks onto my audio editor (Audition 3.01), and found that ALL of the tracks were highly compressed into clipping. The entire album plays at the same volume level throughout and is fatiguing to listen to. I then went onto youtube, and found all of the tracks available on the David Bowie channel, and downloaded them in 256k mp3, and opened them up in my editor. I found those tracks NOT clipping, but still more than considerably compressed. It's a real shame that 98% of all music released since the mid-90's has been ruined by this corporate-mandated mastering compression that not only takes away the excitement and dynamic range of music, but also introduces clipping distortion. Anyone can digitize any CD or vinyl and see for themselves what's going on with the recording. That's why original vinyl releases before digital always sound more alive and exciting, and the same for all older CD releases, before the mid-90s. Fortunately there are some CD releases after the 90s that were not subjected to this treatment, and that preserve the sound of the music as well as red-book allows.

I'm having a hard time deciding between this and the Technics SU-GX70. I would pull the trigger on the Technics rn if it had more watts per channel. I'm buying it for a relatively small room, but I've always purchased amps with an abundance of power. I like to have that grip on the lower end and the option of using it in a larger room if I ever wanted to. It probably sounds like I'm answering my own question, but the Technics is the better watt to watt integrated (imo), and it's less money. Anything you think would help me make this decision would be appreciated.

An idea for maybe a future video: you should talk about how some equipment keeps its value and some not / for example: I have a Denon AVR-4810CI / this was originally a $3000 piece of equipment, it's for movies, but can be used for 2-channel and it sounds pretty damn good also! I picked it up at the thrift store for $100 and that's what they seem to go for $100 - $300 range.. depends if you find one with the remote or not... it's a 10+-year-old piece of equipment, but it lost like 97% of its value / on the Other hand I recently bought a used: Primare I20 from Sweden for $350, but they go for $1299 new - dedicated 2-channel audiophile amp and also about 10 years old and, well I did get a good deal, but these sell for about $500 to $600 used, maybe more - it lost a fraction of its original value compared to the other Brand, maybe 50% or 40% - depending on the deal you get... / I mean there is a big difference in lost value between these Brands... as just one example... more serious dedicated equipment seems to keep its value and these integrated amps do not, be warned! Now I can't say anything about this Marantz, made in Japan, probably more on the limited series, but who knows, looks pretty awesome too!

What you recommend to buy between Marantz Cinema 70 and Marantz 40n? which one has a better phono stage and works better with a CD player? Is the $1500 difference between them worth to go with 40n? I'm ok spending $2500 for the 40n if it makes more sense. (I'm not watching a lot of movies or playing games). 2. Is Marantz CD 60 the best match with 40n, or works ok with Cinema 70? 3. What bookshelf speakers you recommend up to $2000 ($2500) per pair? (I have a Klipsch Reference R-10SW 10" 300w Powered Subwoofer and I was hinking about Klipsch 600M II to match the subwoofer, but I'm ok spending more for better quality or better match with Marantz). 4. I listened to the Model 30 and the Model 40n, both on Alpha Audio's YT channel, and they used the same 3 songs and their reference Focal Sopra 1 speakers, and, to my ears, the 40 sounded fuller and more natural, and more three dimensional and just more real, and the 30 sounded thinner, flatter, and more two dimensional. I think class D still has a way to go to compete with class AB, if it ever can.
@V1ralB1ack2 жыл бұрын
Class D has that characteristic sound. It competes... it's got power and dynamics but it carries that unrealistic digital high resolution sound signature. It's like tubes. They will always have great midrange and a uniquely big soundstage to its solid state counterpart. Why? it's in the design. The effort it would take to make a tube amp sound like a solid state is soo costly it'd be cheaper to just buy a solid state. Same applies with class d. It's strengths are its small size and efficiency (low heat). It is what it is.
@mmmbbq2 жыл бұрын
It would have been really cool of you could decode DSD through that HDMI port. Why this is only available through an AVR is dumbfounding. Also, it's great they did, and you pointed out, put in a great built in phono stage. Honestly, I have a bunch of Receivers, integrates, and preamps with awesome phono amps built in, all as good or, in many cases, better than, the Mani. Marantz's *extremely* poor tone controls are the reason I keep refusing to buy a Marantz amp -- even though, in other respects, I would LOVE to buy this one. Marantz chooses to boost a very narrow peak at 50 Hz in the bass and at 15 kHz in the treble. The result is that all you hear is some extra hiss in the treble and some hard thumping way down low. It doesn't allow you alter the tone in a musically satisfying way. BOO Marantz. To see what I'm talking about, look at the tone control measurements in the Stereophile review of the 40n.

It is truly amazing what Chinese audio offers today ! Check out Cayin, Line Magnetic, Topping, Denafrips etc... The build quality is just amazing and the price/performance proposition is hard to beat.

@@DigitalPhilosophers So true.. yet there are those that will boycott them due country of origin. Oh well... I am no supporter of the regime but these hifi manufacturers there are cottage industries and I highly doubt if it is even in the radar of the communist party (unlike Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent etc) . Interesting times we live in !!!

Hey Steve, do you think this would be a huge upgrade going from an Outlaw Audio rr2160 mk2 in sound quality? I'm driving a pair of Kef R3's in a 12X16 room.

No, the Outlaw is excellent.

I've had the outlaw and while I thought it was good sound for the money to me it kind of sounded monotonal. Like you didn't get a sense of the timbre as well as the color of music as much as other amps I've heard. I recently purchased a Marantz PM 8006 which is very similar to the new model 40 and it is quite literally a night and day difference.

A board over the heat sink, not really optimal for components

Is there a vintage Marantz that is comparible with this new one?
