I mean, comedians usually have a script that they've rehearsed over and over and over and over again. A joke isn't really funny after you've heard it 20 times, and especially not if you yourself wrote it.
@TashWigley7 жыл бұрын
*jungla3* is correct. In addition to that, comedians often have some kind of acting skill that allows them to turn a set of jokes into an actual performance. You can always tell a good comedian from a bad one by whether or not they lose the structure of their performance via their own laughter. Being able to write and repeat decent jokes doesn't automatically make someone a good comedian, you have to be able to put on the performance as well.

Some people are oblivious, so let me clarify why this video is (rightfully) labeling the heckler as homophobic: she repeatedly says that "Eric is a nice guy" and "great guy" while at the same time stating "he's not gay". This clearly implies she doesn't think gay men are good people or that Eric is too good to be gay. Either way, clearly homophobic. Plus, she takes offense to a joke about another man touching a man's penis. If she wasn't a homophobe, she wouldn't care. Is it clear now?
@jw114329 жыл бұрын
+chapachuu that's one interpretation. the women's complaints were also derived from feeling as though he was being harassed, and by saying he's a nice guy, they're justifying why the comedian should cease his harassment. clarifying that he was not gay could also have simply been in response to the suggestions of holding a penis, so he would not do so for that very reason. who knows if you're right or if i am right, because the only thing that's obvious at this point is that this title and the interactions of the video herein are entirely subjective.
@chapachuu9 жыл бұрын
jw11432 Well, if you disregard sequence from the context I could see how you could interpret it differently. However, that still leaves her obvious offence at the joke itself. In my experience, you only get offended/defensive when 1) there is truth to the implication, or 2) you are bigot. And since she is adamant it's not the former reason that leaves the later.
@seanidzone51209 жыл бұрын
+chapachuu I completely agree with you.

actually, a person suffering from homophobia would exhibit similar physiological responses to people who suffer from a variety of other phobias, such as increased heart rate, blood vessel constriction, dialation of the pupils, cold and hot flashes, perspiration, shaking, nausea, extreme dread, fright, a need to flee the area, and more. These are all classic and expected reactions to people who suffer from irrational fears, or what we know as phobias. so therefore the person who is drunk in the audience is not suffering from an irrational fear of gay people, she simply just doesn't like them or approve of their behavior. the term homophobia is a poor attempt to apply a snazzy sounding term to cover both harmless people who have decided that homosexuality is not their cup of tea, as well as dangerous people who would wrongfully hurt someone who is. so by lumping the two groups under the one wrong term of homophobic, you erase any chance of nudging the harmless persons viewpoint more towards your own, as they are offended that you lump them in with the thugs who beat up and worse those who are gay. in other words, enough with the made up buzzwords that are only meant to insult and divide. can't we just be who we are and not have to be forced to approve of everyone else's life choices?

She freaked out about the idea of one man holding another man's penis, and she said that her friend can't be gay because he's a nice person. That doesn't sound homophobic to you?
@Jimmy2cocks57011 жыл бұрын
Forgive me for being i guess i would call it "Dense". But when i think of homophobia i think of people who can't stop using the word "f*gg*t" and letting it be loud and clear they are extremely uncomfotable around gays, and cant handle the thought or action of one being gay even if as a joke. I don't know. Reguardless That chick def sucked and was annoying as fuck..... . By the way I like your stand up stuff, I stumbled into them last night and I have watched several of your videos and I thourougly enjoyed them NO HOMO!!!!!!! haha jk bout the no homo just being faceitious.
@ChadH1711 жыл бұрын
She got very defensive about Eric being associated with anything gay. Homophobia is a fear by definition. You can be homophobic and not be a loud obnoxious jerk like you are explaining.
@GarrellWoods9 жыл бұрын
James Pulizzi There are varying levels of homophobia just like there are varying levels of racism. "He's not gay, he's the nicest person in the world", this carries the implication that it is impossible, in her eyes, to be a nice person and be gay at the same time which inherently means that gay people aren't nice people. This is homophobic

I hate people who come to a comedy club and try to pull some invalid righteous bullshit. If you aren't going into such a place with a fun outlook, go the fuck home. Don't ruin it for everybody else who's there to have a good time and goof off. I don't go to O'Charley's to buy clothes, the movie theatre to get my car repaired or a club to attempt to preach to people. I wish people had the mind to make good decisions instead of showing their asses. Clearly, Eric involved himself. Then, when he was seen as being playful and able to dish out, and therefore take it, his table tries to get foolishly righteous. Blame Eric for misrepresenting himself, not the people who innocently believed the representation.

Yep. Only needy for attention and too drunk or stupid to realise what they try to use to make themselves look glorious to their mates is just rendering them ridiculous.
@frozenbinarystudio11 жыл бұрын
I once was at a comedy club, and I was rambunctious enough to gain the comics attention. I didn't make a stink about it, it was my fault for calling attention to myself, and it was funny in spite of the fact I was the subject of the comics jokes. I would do it again had I not felt I was disrupting someones livelihood.

The audience is not obligated to be silent during your act. Especially if it's not very funny. If people talking throws you off that much, I question if you're cut out for being a comic at all. Not to mention you're really reaching to find something homophobic in there.
@AnyoneCanSee9 жыл бұрын
Where's the "homophobic" part? Your intro is that a comic asked for a volunteer and then tried to humiliate the guy and that makes him "homophobic." You don't even claim he said anything negative or was nasty about it. In fact you admit you just continued to pick on the same guy for cheap laughs.
@AnyoneCanSee9 жыл бұрын
DA Pikle Samurai - I did watch the entire video and, thanks to this comment, I just wasted my time watching it again. Instead of leaving a smart Alex comment, perhaps what you should have done is actually answered my question. At no point in this, does anyone act homophobic.
@ChickenWingus9 жыл бұрын
Robert J. Williamson you don't have to call him gay, hes nice He can't be both? as soon as he mentions anything homoerotic they say its to far hes a nice guy
@AnyoneCanSee9 жыл бұрын
DA Pikle Samurai - Well, what she actually, say is "Too far, man, too far. He's a doctor and I don't want anymore jokes. Don't call him gay. He's so nice." The comic was making fun of him and talking about him touching a lot of dicks in his job. The person shouting out was asking the comic to stop mocking their friend. They were not suggesting being gay was a bad thing, but all the jokes at Erics expense. As I said, in this video at least they don't do anything wrong. He is picking on them as they are at the front. A lot of comics do this for cheap laughs, to whoever sits at the front. He's trying to justify it by calling them homophobic and hecklers, when in fact they are neither in this video. It's not a big deal, I'm just saying that's how I see it. And thanks for explaining what you think about it. And people are rude all the time online, its a sad part of life these days. People just aren't nice to each other anymore. It's actually starting to make life quite hard, to be honest. We have a generation and a time in history when being rude and nasty are the order of the day. I really wish we lived even when I was a kid and people tried to be nice to each other.

Robert J. Williamson Come on, I don't believe you're that dense. There is an obvious undercurrent of homophobia here. These people are nowhere near Westborough Baptists but anyone who isn't homophobic wouldn't have responded the way they did.

Steve Hofstetter I get what you are doing, I understand that you are just trying to make content...and if you can make it political and do a little virtue signaling in the video description, all the better for you. But, do you really think that lady was homophobic?? Because I don’t see it. It seemed more likely that she was just drunk and mildly upset that you were singling out her man. It just so happened that you were talking about dicks and gay stuff. You could have been talking about his intelligence, appearance or anything really, and she would have had the same reaction. Most people don’t really want political opinions thrown in our faces at a comedy show. When you do this, you may score some brownie points with some of your audience, but you’ll alienate about half. I’m not saying you should never share your political opinions, I’m just saying you shouldn’t grasp at straws for an opportunity to be a white night, wait until a genuine opportunity arises.

One thing i love about Steve is that he's willing to go after anyone, regardless of their race, religion, disabilities, etc. It's not like he maliciously attacks handicapped people or a certain race, he just treats them like any other person in the audience without mentioning a disability or anything. That's a true comic.

Hey Steve, I've watched a lot of your heckler videos and it really makes me wonder two things: first, is heckling really that common an occurrence for a comedian on the road? Second, why would someone pay money to go see a show and then disrupt it midstream. It seems to me that if you are offended by a comedian, rather than selfishly blurting things out and ruining the show for others who might actually be enjoying it, the best thing to do would be to quietly get up and go ask the manager of the club for a refund, then leave... Keep up the good work ^.^
