Oh my goodness. Im a med student now, but 6 or 7 years ago, I was an ER volunteer, such stressful memories. I was a lone operator! Nobody took me under their wing, I just walked around the waiting room and tried to help people, or went into rooms of people the orderlies said could use some company. Sometimes I brought people stuff like a toothbrush or a blanket, help them call a taxi or a family member, or they'd give me money and I'd go buy them a good coffee or meal from one of the restaurants in the hospital. I almost never talked to any nurses, mostly I would ask the orderlies where stuff was! It was definitely a bit touch and go and I'd always be worried of getting in the staff's way but I think I made life easier for a few people here and there!

They wouldn't have got me with "fallopian tube!" Well before puberty I was already reading the Sex Ed books Mom bought for my older sister (who didn't read them), so I knew everything about baby-making except for the act itself. And I taught the girls of the big Catholic family across the street because they really wanted to know. (They were probably all the better for it.) The subtleties of them being Catholic went completely over my head as a child of 8.

In my high school anatomy and physiology class, we were studying fertilization, and the teacher asked for a volunteer to go over to the next class and say that we just made a zygote in class. A girl volunteered, and her twin brother asked if he could go with her. Having a brother and sister telling a class that they just made a zygote in class couldn't have looked good. 🤣

We never had volunteers when I worked in ER. When I was training in pathology the department thought it’d be a good PR move to invite members of the public to visit a pathology laboratory and see how it worked. I got landed with a group of 3 older ladies in our dissection area. Thought I’d show them an appendix. One by one they passed out. It was like geriatric dominoes.

There were volunteers in hospitals back in the 1970's and before. I was a volunteer for a little while, but there were more dedicated volunteers called candy - stripers (their uniform was red and white striped) who helped nurses and were kind of proto - nurses. But that changed in the 1980's when patient information privacy became more of a thing, and you can't really trust a teen with patient information. Them came HIPAA and no more volunteers.

I remember the volunteer in surgery recovery during my stay. I was feeling pretty sick and vulnerable so I didn't want to talk to anyone really but I remember this little old lady next to me. The volunteer was able to give her the time and the company she desperately needed. She knew the area and the goings on so was able to fill in the little old lady in on local news and just give her the stimulation she desperately needed. The nurses (understandably) didn't have time for gossip or chat, but she was so lonely. I thought that alone was incredibly sweet. I had my curtains closed around my bed so I could pretend I was in my own little world, every time a nurse or surgeon came over the check on me they'd open the curtains then leave them wide open when going off. I don't blame them, they're busy and probably in auto pilot but I was in too much pain to get up and close them. The volunteer made it their own little mission to close my curtains everytime they saw them open. Always with a smile. Probably is annoying to be stalked around by someone with no medical knowledge in the hectic ER but there definitely is a space for volunteers in the hospital.

Fun fact I learned in hydrotherapy. If you have a burn and you run it under warmish water then Luke warm water and then just a bit cooler water (not cold) it will not blister as badly. It helps to bring the temperature down a bit slower which improves the microcirculatory perfusion increasing tissue survival

@@PirateNikki While that may be the best thing to do for the health of the surviving tissue cold water feels SO much better on a burn! Love when the ER lies and says the pain will be less once it's been treated and bandaged... Total BS 😆 the pain comes back as soon as the cold water goes away.
@tyoidbone
@tyoidbone 2 жыл бұрын
The goal is to bring down the temperature quickly. Cool, running water is best for this. And for at least 20min. Blistering comes from the damage to the skin and subcutaneous tissues from heat, so there’s no point doing warm water first as it does not remove heat. Go straight to cool water. I wish first aid for burns was taught to the general public better. I’ve seen people rub the burns, put toothpaste, honey, cream, or various other viscous liquids on the burns instead of just running the burn under water. Worse are the ones who do nothing, and only seek medical attention the next day when their skin starts peeling off.
@TheEmbersFromAshes
@TheEmbersFromAshes 2 жыл бұрын
@@tyoidbone I got a steam burn from not venting some clam chowder I'd been nuking. As I pulled back the plastic wrap the steam escaped immediately enveloping my right hand. The blisters formed at the moment of contact so that when I grabbed the hand the blisters popped. OMG the pain was so bad it made me instantly nauseated. I ran cold water on it as it was the only thing that relieved the pain. My then husband called me a baby and refused to drive me to the ER. I had to fill a baggie with cold water and a few ice cubes (the heat from the burn caused non-moving water to grow warm and lose its pain relieving effect) rubber band the baggie around my wrist and drive myself to the ER. Thank gawd I didn't have a stick shift and had power steering else I'd have not made it there. I was surprised by the rapidity with which they saw me for treatment as there were people with actively bleeding lacerations who were waiting before I even arrived. They gave me the BS line about how it would stop hurting once they applied burn cream and bandaged it (which included splints on 3 fingers), gave me a tetanus shot and an Rx for Norco. The pharmacy used a child proof bottle when they filled it which I couldn't open. Explained to them it had to be packaging I could open but they wouldn't do it unless I signed a liability waiver. I'm right handed, told them signing anything would be difficult so they were going to have to accept unreadable scribble as a signature and could they please re-process the Rx ASAP. Twenty minutes later I finally got to take 2 Norco which I was disappointed to find barely took the edge off. When I got back home the now ex was surprised by all the bandages, pain med Rx, etc but refused to acknowledge that it was a big enough deal to go to the ER for or apologize for being a major azzhat. Just one of the many reasons he's an ex. Burns effing hurt sooooo bad!!

Had an elderly neighbour who burned her hand (severely!) with hot frying oil. She put butter on the burn 🤦 made it so much worse! When my mom found out, later in the day, she bundled the neighbour up and brought her to the health clinic for immediate attention (we were living in a remote town with no hospital so the health clinic was like a mini ER). There were some full thickness burns in some places. She had months of therapy.

The sending the volunteer on a "quest" so as not deal with his "helpfulness" reminded me of my photo finishing days. When I was in my early 20s, I worked for a one hour film processing lab (that alone, dates me, right?). Our mini lab was located in a fairly large two story mall. One of the anchor stores was, Caldor's, which had a fairly decent camera department, and there was another mini lab located mid mall. That said, as a prank, we would send the new staff off on "quests" for f-stops and shutter speeds. Thankfully, the hazing was taken in hood humor.

I have a funny hospital story you can use for a skit! So, I was in the hospital for a week long stay after being very sick. I was on an IV. My nurse came in and told me she needed to change my IV in about an hour when she’s done with her other patients. She said that if I was already asleep, as it was late, she would try not to wake me. So I got ready for bed, eyes closed and lights out, and I hear someone come in. I figure she’s in to do the IV so I just let her do her thing as I’m super tired. I suddenly hear her grumble, “Stop that!” And am super confused. So I pop an eye open and what I see is two nurses, in the dark, working on my IV, with one holding a flashlight and flailing it around to be funny. I mumbled to them that I was awake so they could turn on the light but my nurse said, “no, no. It’s fine... go back to sleep...” and the other nurse with the flashlight says, “If we put on the light then what do I do?” And smart Alec me just says, “You’ll be the peanut gallery...” and they laugh. They finally finish up and leave. Not two minutes later I suddenly feel wet... and in my head all I can think is, either I’m bleeding... or something is leaking... I somehow manage to flip myself out of the bed onto the side of the bed, elbow for the nurse, and grab the leaking cord all in one crazy movement. It was near the end of my stay so I was feeling a lot better then I had originally been. The nurse comes in, sees me sitting there holding the cord in the dark and her eyes go wide and all she says is, “Oh no...” I look at her and give a sheepish little grin as I say, “Maybe you shouldn’t be doing IVs in the dark...” She had to help me change and change the wet bed. I told her she might not want to tell her partner or she may never live it down. The next morning when she came in she did something to my IV again and I couldn’t help but ask, “Is everything hooked up where it’s supposed to be?” With a grin. She laughed.

I remember doing some work experience at a vets during summer and the head vet there was super nice to me (and incredibly handsome, I was 15 and didn't know what to do w myself). He would always ask me questions that made me think and encouraged me to ask questions. He was a great influence on me and made me less scared of asking adults questions even if I thought they were stupid. (Most of thr time asking "but why tho?" Isn't a dumb question as it turns out). It was only a week but his kindness and patience really helped me along in my next Life Chapter (sounds corny but its true). Alas, I still fainted at blood and things being cut open so my dreams of being a vet were quite thoroughly dashed after a few close calls with fainting. 🤣🤦‍♀️

I love the pranks the characters pull all the time. It reminds me of when I worked at McDonalds because my coworkers and I would do stuff like that all the time. There was a girl who had started the same day as me, and she was hella gullible so she was usually the target of dumb pranks. There was one time one of the managers asked her to find a bag of sesame seeds for the buns and a bag of steam for the grill. She spent an hour in dry stalk looking for it and almost cried because she thought she would be fired for not finding them.😂 There was also another time another manager had asked her to get all the salt and pepper shakers from the lobby and play area and bring them to the front counter. While the girl left to get them the manager told all of us to act natural and don't say a word... Especially to me because by now me and her were actually pretty good friends and I was usually the one who told her when she was getting punked. She comes back with a tray of shakers and asked what to do with them. So my manager just goes; " so corporate messed up and sent us the wrong shakers by accident, they are supposed to screw off to refill them but they sent us faulty shakers. But we have to use these ones untill the new ones come in. Well they have to be refilled but the only way to do that is by opening the packets of salt and pepper and refilling it through the holes..." She comes back with a hand full of salt and pepper packets and tells my friend to get to it. Mind you these ones are desposable and we literally have 6 boxes of them in the back. But my friend didn't think of that so she starts trying to fill the shakers with the packets and she gets about 20 packets in when she realizes that we are all just standing around watching her do this laughing out asses off and my manager had her phone out recording this. 😂 She got mad and asked why I didn't stop her and I'm like "girl I love you, but of your going to be that gullible and fall for something that obviously Sketch then you kinda deserved that one. Especially when you know that our manager is always pulling pranks on you."

LMAO as an aspiring med school student I have volunteered in a children's hospital ER before and I really liked it! No one took me under their wing, so I would just check in with the charge nurse at the beginning of my shift to see if she needed something specific and if not I would help with cleaning and seeing if families in the waiting room and in the rest of the rooms in general needed something. I remember I would put rolls of stickers around my arms and stick crayons and coloring books in my pockets to give out to families and kids or I would bring pillows and blankets to family members that had been in the ER for very long periods of time. And I really loved doing all of that! joking around with patients and families, being there for them, and seeing the look on the children's faces whenever they saw me coming wrapped around stickers was awesome haha. But whenever I would approach nurses I had the same nervous smile as Dale in the video cause I had just decided to apply to med school and it was one of my first experiences volunteering and learning about healthcare in the US and I really wanted to be helpful and not seen as a nuisance. So I would die on the inside and have a huge panic smile whenever I would see a nurse 😂 .If they needed anything, whatever they would ask, I would just run and do it without questioning it so I see how other volunteers who get really nervous could fall for those tricks, so I empathize with Dale cause he probably was feeling like that haha (I do know what a fallopian tube is tho😂). There were sometimes tho while I was giving out stickers or cleaning when nurses would approach me and say that they really appreciated me or that they knew the patients were appreciating my work and that would always make my day so if you are a healthcare worker definitely do that for your volunteers it truly means the world for us when we know we are being helpful to you haha

I usually love your videos, dude. But volunteers are giving up their own time and good energy for free to help others. Dicking around with them, even if you find them a little annoying, isn’t cool. Many hospitals started with volunteers and most hospices.

I LOVE our volunteers. Most of them are students with plans of going into med, or retired folks with backgrounds in med-adjacent stuff like biotech or insurance, so they're generally pretty smart and know to some extent what they're getting into. 95% of what we have them do is just help people get from place to place within our department, because we're a huge hospital and it's easy to get lost (and because our hospital refuses to hire enough patient transporters...). The rest of the time is tracking down wheelchairs (there's never enough of them at walk in triage!) and getting stuff like blankets for patients. They're massively helpful and we absolutely notice when they're not there.

I know with burns you run it under cool water, but chicken fat works too. Once I was on a picnic and we usually cook the food at the spot rather than pack the food from home and I burned my hand, while tending to the fire. I wasn't near a sink or running water. But we did pack some chicken fat, which we were gonna use for cooking and I slatered that on the burn. It helped cool down the burn and the stinging went away, this is a pretty normal way to help burns in my culture. So if your burn still stings even after the running water, chicken fat helps to relieve the pain.

if yall wondering what the fallopian tube is, its basically a tube within the female body parts. alongside the uterus, vajayjay, ovaries, etc. so asking labor and delivery for a "fallopian tube" would be a curse.

😂😂. We actually would do this in the military. Not sure if everyone in the military did, but as a corpsman I did this and had it done to me. As a new check-in to the ward or OR, you would be sent on a wild goose case for things that aren’t to be found (..ie fallopian tubes). Each clinic, ward, etc. were in on it, but the point was to get the new check-in familiar with the hospital and the main areas they would have to visit while working. So it was a day of back and forth to these areas so they knew their way around and could quickly get to each place.

Wear did the myth that you put butter on burns come from? I burned my hand with grease. 3re and 2nd degree burns. They told me I'd never be able to make a fist. But i practice squezing my tennis ball, since i couldn't play tennis. I surprised my Dr at my last check up. He thought for sure my nerves and tendons were burned away. My brother had a similar grease burn but didn't clean it and warts got all over his entire hand. Had to get surgery to remove them. So when i burned my hand. I cleaned it daily. Brushing the crap out of it. Oh the smell and the pain were crazy. Thank God for the silver something that is like Noxema.

The butter myth started a hundred or so years ago. It is SO harmful that it actually makes the burn CONTINUE to burn through layer upon layer of skin! The very best thing to do IMMEDIATELY after a serious burn, is to call 911- THEN, put the burn under COOL water. That will ease the pain a little bit. Once the burn starts to cool off from the intense pain, using sterile gauze/ bandaging, wrap up the burn to prevent any air from touching the burn. The air hitting it will just make the burn hurt so much worse! I am NOT a doctor- but I have had burns and been treated by doctors who TOLD ME how to treat them before I could get EMERGENCY TREATMENT. Burns are the very worst type of injury- for the patient, AND the medical professionals who treat them.

A classic “snipe hunt” quest. If I volunteered with a volunteer that was that dense I’d go along with it because I wouldn’t want to have them around. However I would first try to ascertain if their brain hadn’t engaged yet because they were so eager. “Do you know what a fallopian tube looks like?” “No? Then enjoy your hunting!”

Opposite for me as a volunteer. Depending on the department.... It was either one of several things....you enter a department and theyre like oooh here you can do this this this and this. Thank you so much! Omg ur the best. Dude she even cleaned after the code brown changed the oxygen tanks out, brought new ones in and did everything for distribution..... Or: dang you work too much for free and im the one getting paid. Why do we even have volunteers -_- screw all volunteers. Volunteers suck.lets throw saline solution on the floor and leave some on her chair before she sits down as a prank ....and then said person get a rush of people in and said persons get called to clean three more beds and no volunteers are around. :) and some homeless dude runs out the door with the wheelchair. And that....is when you realize damn.....im not getting paid.......
