Today is the 27th anniversary of the night we recorded this album "Come Holy Spirit" (Aug. 27, 1995) at my home church in Toronto (Crossroads Cathedral) where I had been the worship leader and music director for 7 years. This title song "Come Holy Spirit" is a beautiful worship song by Mal Fletcher that has touched millions of lives around the world.
This was actually a "regular" Sunday night worship service, that God touched mightily with His presence. He had been visiting us powerfully during our summer Sunday night services, taking over our praise and worship times, even leading us to change our planned order of songs often. The presence of the Lord was so powerful that people would often come forward to the altar during the worship to meet with the Lord and experience His delivering power.
This Sunday evening was our final service in the summer of 1995. A day before the service, the Holy Spirit urged me to bring in a 16-track reel-to-reel recorder to capture what He was about to do. Our soundmen rose to the challenge (having never recorded a live worship service with professional equipment before!), and God truly guided all the musicians, singers and soundmen to flow in His purposes. The Holy Spirit moved mightily, and at the end many people came to the altar to meet the Lord. There was even a seven-minute period where the congregation just flowed in waves of open worship. (The open worship actually goes much longer than what is on the CD, plus there are four additional songs that are not included on the CD)
Over the next five months the singers reinforced their vocal tracks, and we added choir and other overdubs. The team who produced "The Lord is My Tower" a year earlier, joined efforts to make this album as sonically perfect as possible, including Roy Oommen (the drummer on this night of worship, who is a great music producer in his own right) and Ken Vandevrie (owner of ADS Studio Productions who recorded and produced "The Lord is My Tower" live album, among others), and for the icing on the cake, George Graves of Lacquer Channel in Toronto mastered the album.
The recording later became a certified Gold record in the Philippines, and was well-received and much loved in many countries of the world. Praise the Lord!
Here is footage from some of the original VHS tapes showing the band and worship singers, and the congregation as they come to the front of the church to meet the Lord and be filled with His Holy Spirit. This is a medley of the title song (written by Mal Fletcher), together with several minutes of spontaneous worship when the congregation came forward to meet the Lord, worship Him, and many to sing in the spirit. It's an amazing atmosphere of worship.
On this video I "added in" some of the original audio from the VHS tapes, which helps capture the "live" feel of the service. (I may do a better video edit with smoother audio transitions later, but I just want to upload it today, in honor of it being exactly 27 years since the Holy Spirit's powerful move during this precious memorable evening.)
"Thank You Lord for Your gracious hand upon us that night 27 years ago. Forever we will remember how You touched us in this service! And Thank You for using this little cassette and CD project to touch people in so many lands. May You continue to use the internet to further Your glorious purposes and bring a powerful sense of Your presence and Holy Spirit to millions worldwide. Amen."
