I was asked by sister Susan Gan in the comments section of this video to explain, "What is soulish worship, and what is spiritual worship?" Here's the brief explanation I shared with her. I hope this may help you. Worship is a very deep topic! Man is a three-part being: spirit, soul, and body. All three parts can be involved in the activity of 'worshiping' God, broadly speaking. But at the core of the matter, true worship must be done as a function of man's spirit. Since God is spirit (that's the very essence of His nature), in other words, He is a SPIRIT being - our worship of Him, in order to be true worship, MUST be done in the REALM of the spirit. Yeshua (Jesus) said, "God is spirit, and they who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:23-24). Therefore we cannot TRULY worship God by just using our mind, will, or emotions (which are all functions of man's soul). Nor can we TRULY worship God by just using our physical bodies (five natural senses). Rather TRUE worship MUST take place in the REALM of the spirit - it must and can only be done as a spirit activity. Physical acts of worship are not true spiritual worship; for example, on the outside we might look like we're worshiping (hands raised, eyes closed, bowing down, etc), but that doesn't mean we're really worshiping God in spirit. Likewise soulish acts of worship themselves are not TRUE spiritual worship; for example we might "think" that we're worshiping God because our brains our thinking about Him; or we might "feel" like we're worshiping Him, because we are having strong emotions about Him (maybe even crying, or feeling deep gratitude for what He did on the cross, or feeling intense ecstacy, etc). All of these can be evidences of true worship that is going on inside us, but in themselves they are not true worship, because TRUE worship can only be done in the realm of the spirit - the realm where we commune with God through our spirit being, and where we experience His presence in our spirit. True worship is a process that develops over a lifetime, as we grow closer to God and Christ and the Holy Spirit, through reading His word, through prayer and intercession, and through various spiritual activities. To truly worship God the Father, we must come to Him through the blood of His Son Yeshua (Jesus Christ) believing: 1) that Christ died to pay for our sins and 2) rose again from the dead to cleanse us and save us from our sins (Romans 10:9-13); and 3) with our lips we must confess that Christ is Lord. This is where true worship begins. Without Christ, no man can come to God the Father, and no man can truly worship God the Father, no matter what kind of outward or inward activities he does. Worship takes place as you experience the living Christ (Messiah the Savior) living in You, and the Holy Spirit of God (the third Person of God) dwelling in You. Close your eyes, and commune with Him. Feel after him. Practice His presence every day, every minute of every day. Talk with Him from the deep recesses of your spirit to the Holy Spirit of God. Read his Word and talk to Him as you read, carrying on a running conversation throughout the day, asking Him, "Lord, what do You want me to understand, through these words?" Yes, speak to Him with your mind and lips, but let it come from your spirit. Cultivate the practice of communing with God in the spirit realm, throughout every day. This is how you develop and strengthen your spirit. It's like a physical muscle, it has to be exercised. So exercise your spirit continually in your life, from the day you are born again, until the day you die and go immediately to be with Him! I hope this helps. Worship is a big topic, which takes a lifetime to learn. I've known the Lord now for over 40 years, and I'm still learning more every day about true worship, and how to worship God in Spirit and Truth. I would recommend a book by Watchman Nee entitled "The Spiritual Man" to learn more about the variety of functions of man's being (spirit, soul and body), and how to differentiate their functions in our own lives. Nee's book will help you to "tune in" to the Spirit realm, and to commune with God in the realm of the Holy Spirit.
