So in short, the fact that this song was able to make me feel sad and nostalgic without understanding/reading the lyrics is proof of the artistical genius of Takeuchi? Well, not gonna disagree with that.

Same for me. I was born in 2001 and, don't get me wrong, I love the 2000s era, but 80s and 90s seem so cool and a bit more simple (well, maybe not in Romania, because of communism). Nowadays, most people don't get out or, if they do, they stare into their phones. If I could live in the 80s for one day, I would.

Half-Japanese here, and I remember growing up in the 80s in the U.S. and remember seeing that love/hate with Japan at the time, but feeling like...vindication? Like I love being American, but seeing how crazy people went for Transformers (remember getting them as Diaclone), Nintendo, and Robotech, the negativity didn't feel like it hit that deep. I had been in Japan at peak City Pop, and I just kept saying to myself, "guys, you don't even know the fuckin' half of it, you would shit yourself."(American Transformers fans in the late 80s got fuckin' *robbed* when they didn't bring out the Japanese exclusives out to the U.S.). Now 35 years later, and here's the sounds of my experiences then coming back in a huge way. Fucking crazy. I have vague memories of just about every commercial having a City Pop soundtrack, like car commercials, or Sony, and my reactions to it then created a yearning or nostalgia (if that can be said for 6, 7, 8 year old to have). I love seeing people having the same reactions to it *now* is awesome.
@PETBOY5 жыл бұрын
Check it. citypop is not a genre. It is the name given by Japanese radio DJ at the time. Plastic love is based on this song. (We Go - Minnie Riperton) The song configuration is the same. Citypop is a copy of Elevator Music. (ex. I Remember Yesterday Donna Summer ) MIki Matsubara - Stay with me. (1980) Carole Bayer Sager - It's The Falling In Love (1978) Exactly the same.

Btw I had no idea that City Pop originated in Japan, like wtf. I've listened to City Pop songs for a long time, but now I like the genre even more. And I'm definitely gonna download Takeuchi's discography this week. Queen. Also, the fact that Plastic Love was basically THE song that brought City Pop into the spotlight (in the West at least??) is just amazing. And also I listened to the song when it first went viral and I was like "it's cool, and I love people watching a Jpop song for no reason", but totally forgot about it until tonight. And btw as you talked about Yubin, she's released more stuff, and at least one other song (that I remember) sounds a little bit like City Pop too.

Oh hey, I remember you commented on our podcast a few months back asking about the clip of Yubin's City Woman for this documentary. Congrats on finishing the video! It really seems to be blowing up. - Andrew
@Stevem6 жыл бұрын
Truly Daebak thanks for the help with that ! Your video at the time was the only reference I could find to an actual audio clip of city love , it was a bit of a moment for me because I had these two different pieces of info one about a Korean pop star doing citypop numbers and the other about plagerism and they turned out to be connected
@kykale6 жыл бұрын
First of all, great editing work! Secondly, does any of you know any other Kpop artist that use the citypop sound/samples? I know that Jazzyfact’s “하루종일” samples Anri’s Last Summer Whisper and that Wonder Girls had a lot of 80s inspired songs on REBOOT.

"Where Are You?" by CLC is very much a City Pop song kzbin.info/www/bejne/on-4gWh4lLONi6c Also Baek Yerin of 15& recently did a cover of "La La La Love Song" by Toshinobu Kubota that is nothing short of excellent kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKesmKR6lM-IpdU Gfriend's most recent single "Sunny Summer" definitely takes some City Pop/Future Funk influences with its use of horns kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5qzfZ2jr5iSi5Y I definitely wish there were more K-Pop songs that took influence from City Pop and Future Funk, its easily one of my favorite music genres, but sadly that's all I've been able to find so far. - Andrew

Ai City to me is the embodiment of that city pop aesthetic, I swear at one point had to pause it to check a musical choice because it sounded like City Pop artists I knew
@Flugmorph6 жыл бұрын
yeah i can see that connection. but the overall vibe of ai city is still quite different from the aesthetic i know from city pop. what with all the hyper pulpy plot, fights and all that crazy stuff going on.

Its weird seeing something obscure you've been into for a long time suddenly become cool. I found Takeuchi through Yamashita through Scoobie Do's cover of Rider on Time through a opening act before Soil & Pimp Sessions ages ago. Also: There's a cool cover album that covers some of Tatsuro Yamashitas music. A member of Earth, Wind, And Fire covered Windy Lady on it.

I agree finding gold and then getting it imported from japan then about 2017 people started finding future funk then BAM! Everyone knows these classics modern producers sampled! I honestly love people finding the music but also don’t like it st the same time because it ain’t a hidden gem anymore

RIP just realised that the Plastic Love video got deleted, when searching for it (again xD). Was shocked to find out it was taken down by the thumbnail's photographer, Alan Levenson. He shot it for Mariya's 1980 Miss M album, not 1984's Variety which is where Plastic Love is from. tbh it makes more sense that he did it through Norman Seeff Studio(which he was working for then)

Terrific video. I knew you were doing this, so despite never listening to the song before (I had heard bits of it, but never cared for it enough to stick around), I decided to sit down, listen and read the lyrics (extraordinary lyrics, I must say). As someone who kinda hates city pop, I absolutely appreciate what KZbin has done for the genre and all the other niche genres out there, and I enjoyed seeing you delve into the way KZbin has changed the way we find music. Although clicking on Plastic Love eventually got Taeko Ohnuki into my recommended bar and I dig her, so I have Mariyah to thank for that. As for who you should do next: I know little about Nujabes, but I think he'd be more interesting than Hosoda. Simply because I think Hosoda has yet to hit his stride; all of his movies feel like they're the work of a guy that will soon, at some point, make a movie that expresses what he's going for in a flawless manner. But he's still hitting line drive singles instead of home runs. Maybe Mirai will be the one to successfully make that connection to me. It did very well at Cannes, so there may be something to it.

Phoenix I very much like taeko's work she got that album artist thing going , I appreciate how her sound has developed over the years. I'll be talking about her on the citypop follow up. I think nujabes Is the favourite right now , hosada video may annoy some people because I tend to agree he's inching towards something fully formed so far my favourite was summer wars I really liked that yet it was just an expanded version of the Digimon movie, the concept seems more suited for that world. However after that point I've not like hosada "dramatic" family side. he's moving away from the adventure template and I'm not sure if that's for the better as he gains more control in both writing , directing and producing

i was introduced to japan city pop by meiko nakahara with Paradise island. Not the usual artist to hear first. i was eating in a small traditional ramen restaurant in montreal, Tsukuyomi, and now i cant stop listening to city pop. Got by mariya's september and plastic love from a classic jpop greatest hits compilation box set i found online, only to discover this city pop movement. I didnt even knew it was called like this until recently, now it makes me even more addicted. thanks for the video!
