After this video I rushed to watch Space Dandy, man It was a big letdown. Couldn't get over episode 3. The teenager sex humor and excessive fanservice made me feel like I was watching a product for kids. I think this is a fair warning, if you liked Cowboy Bebop, this series has NOTHING to do with it.

@@OjoRojo40 did you watch it though ? Like I made a point in the video this wasn't bebop it's a very wild loose pulp crass experimental thing. I can also give many examples of episodes which are not like that as I did in the vid . The dog in the junkyard episode written by the head writer of bebop , maasaki yuasa ep , episode 5, the plant episode , the big fish ep , the interdimentional ep etc

Space Dandy sold me on its concept during the first seconds. I just love it when a production throws itself into the unknown while barely being able to hold on to its own rules. Even those stories of the script meetings being limited to two sessions each episode. Watanabe and the crew simply set it all up so that they couldn't think too hard on the next step. Kind of forcing the production to jazz like improvisation. And it damn well worked.
@Stevem

It sounds to me that these writing sessions weren't out of the norm they've joked in the past that a lot of it is talking about stupid stuff that in a roundabout way takes form into an episode.

Man Space Dandy was an absolute treat. It felt like an extended version of Genius Party. It turned me into a more "hardcore" fan of anime looking for more treats like it. I'm quite glad that its production spawned the staff and producers of One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, especially mob psycho. Its art style is so out there in its use of different mediums and how off model it always looks it just feels like dandy's spiritual successor. Great video as always!

A World with No Sadness, Baby was for the me single best episode of Space Dandy, everything was so good crafted, how Dandy is potrayed and the story itself was very emotional, and the end of the episode i was in tears on how beautiful everything was, also that final part before the credits roll out the girl waiting Dandy with a smile, was something else. I might do a Top 10 Space Dandy episodes, there was so many hiding gems on terms of plots, direction and production in general.

Ay, you used the blog post I showed you, awesome. Space Dandy deserves more love, it’s actually what got me interested in anime as a medium in the first place. It’s a show that really doesn’t have the broad appeal of Bebop or Champloo but I hope it finds a cult following someday. It’s pretty beloved in the Sakuga community at least. Can’t wait for you to tackle Carol and Tuesday. Keep up the good work.

ok, I went found S1&2 and started watching them...first time was on mushrooms and I was just speechless watching Space Dandy - just so good in so many ways. Then I continued watching it sober a few days later and it was just as enjoyable in a different way - some complex ideas presented in a bizarre absurd way baby. I loved Bebop and Champloo even more...and then this?! So glad you turned me onto this in this series. Thank you!

I was definitely surprised when I first started watching Space Dandy as I was not expecting a humor laden absurdist masterpiece, however, with Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo being two of my favorite and most frequently re-watched animes, I had no doubt it would be great. I did not feel the same resistance as other viewers because I wasn’t set in my expectations of the show. I love the former so much and trust Watanabe and his team so completely, I got to just sit back and enjoy the show because I knew whatever they put out would be amazing in it’s own right even if it doesn’t mirror previous works. I don’t go out of my way to watch comedy and the overall visual theme of Space Dandy isn’t my absolute favorite but it works perfectly for what it is and it’s become one of my favorites to watch. These three shows are also the only anime series I will watch Dubbed over subbed. The voice acting is just top notch.

Who cares Baby indeed. The go with the Flow mentality at it's finest. Though there's some other points worth establishing I didn't get time to say in the video. "Cowboy Bebop" is absolutely absurdistic, nihilistic, existential show. It's transcendental masterpiece about life and death. It's sodden with bushido philosophy as well, death is everywhere. Too bad many don't understand it. "Space Dandy" is like that as well, but representation is completely different. Not to say that ironically overwhelming majority don't even understand Spike character at all, while praising him. Saying that he is "laid-back" is totally wrong. For 22 years I grow very tired of explaining things about "Cowboy Bebop" and other Watanabe works. Wrote without exaggeration more that "War and Peace" about it. But I don't blame people. Not everyone supposed to be thinker, philosopher, have high intelligence, and similar world view and mind as Watanabe, or know much, and read tons of philosophy and cognitivistics and other books to understand it. No one can understand fully, no one can understand each other fully, since seperate consciousness, subject-object attitude. But still, good job with these "The Man Behind Cowboy Bebop" series. Keep up the improving, even while everything is meaningless in the end. Absurdism wins.

Sorry, but to say that "Terror in Resonance" is one of Yoko Kanno finest works and OSTs one should be really ignorant of her works. It's one of her weak ones, or at least mediocre ones to say at least, even if it's a different. But she always was eclectic.

@EvgeniyNeutralMusician
@EvgeniyNeutralMusician 4 жыл бұрын
@@Stevem Not so subjective as most people think with their cognitive biases. There are pretty solid criterions in art and music in particular. Human nature is the same for all humans. Life and death conditions are objective. Beauty and feeling of it is similar, if you get what I mean. 99.9% will find beauty in the same things. It's gone long time with evolution, thousands and millions of years. It's even genetical. I will not go into music theory at the moment, I don't think I'm a good musician and theorist in this field, but I'm a great listener and I understand a lot in different art (literature and music especially, then cinema and painting) and criterions, being a polymath, more than 2 decades of learning and researching cognitive science and fine art didn't go wrong and useless for me. But let me know if you want to talk about it more detailed, then I think we can find some time and do this. "I like the style I'm a big fan of Icelandic bands what can I say." - that's the biggest reason why you value this OST so high. And it's ok. But again, favourite and the best is not the same thing, you see. There is big difference in terms and semantics. For example, I can like some mediocre art, or good one, but not the very best thing, not some masterpiece, and I can have it in my favourites, but I will not say that it is best. You see? That's a big difference. I wish you and more people would distinguish "meat and cutlet". But usually people claim their favoutire works to be the best. It can be true, don't get me wrong, but not necessary, and usually it's not so. You can go on any video on YT and you will see in the comments that probably someone there is claiming that "this is the best thing ever", which in overwhelming majority of times will be not true. Cognitive biases and logical mistakes of humans and their brains are huge. And they are everywhere. Even for the most rational ones, sadly. C'est la vie. Sad, but true. Sapienti sat.
@Stevem

I fundamentally disagree with the idea of objectively great art, as in the best of all time shit. Subjectivity is implied, I don't care to get into a circle jerk about the difference between subjectivity and cognitive bias

@@Stevem Okay, that's your opinion. Opinions are truly subjective. So it can be wrong and probably is wrong. The problem is when people find subjectivity in objective phenomenons. Adjacent problem is fanaticism. Nevermind tho, if you don't want to research, to doubt and try to find truth, I will not impose more information and explanations. Surface level is not interesting for me anymore. Enlightenment. Best wishes.

Nice that you brought up absurdism and Camu, one of my favourite absurdism writers, but the important part that he was totally wrong that we must imagine Sisyphus happy. Albert critisizes there thinkers from Aristotle to Shestov, but then he falls into his own trap of illusions and self deception. I was just giving lectures in the university about absurdism and his "Myth" weeks ago, so I know what I'm talking about. His conclusions are very wrong logically, inconsistent, but the value of that essay in the critique and collection of ideas and thoughts of thinkers from Dostoevskiy to Kierkegaard. However there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. Cognitive thinking determine your morals.

What's flawed about imagining Sisyphus as happy ? Or do you think that's it's flawed specifically in the sense that we *must* imagine Sisyphus as happy ?

Great video, I'll have to check out Terror Resonance it looks pretty interesting. Space Dandy is such an amazing show, I love everything about it. It's art style(s), music, animation, color schemes character design; everything it has to offer. The show got me into anime and music in other languages. It feels weird that before 2014 I couldn't begin to think about listening to foreign music and now I can't imagine music without that. I really hope those rumours about a season 3 for Space Dandy were true.

I doubt a season 3 would ever happen I know theyve mentioned movie in the past and with the sign of the times , id go that way they could make a lot more money that way potentially

@@Stevem Yeah a movie would be great. Honestly just any new Dandy content really. A movie would have a higher budget so Dandy could look even better than he already does.

Okay, I'll give Space Dandy another go. I watched a few episodes some years ago and it didn't really click for me, but you make it sound interesting.

Gosh, I've forgotten how much I liked Terror in Resonance. Despite the flaws the series has, it works for me. Thanks for giving your review of it! And of course, Space Dandy. I wish more people saw the show. It's awesome.

space dandy is better than champloo which felt really tired by the second half. cowboy bepop... i dont know if i would place higher, dandy is absurdist, and it works but it doesn't also. its reminds me of red dwarf at its best and worst at the same time. its incredibly cringe and yet, further viewings make it essential. certain shows like death note or neon genesis Evangelion are incredibly dull and simplistic once their premise has worn itself out, which happens way too fast. I don't think dandy ever would i guess its something. its monty python but not as shit

I actually liked space dandy from episode one and by the start of season two I liked it a lot more than bebop which means to me bebop is in third when it comes to this trilogy champloo got bumped to second at the end of season two

You know what, I really understand what you go through because of your name. My name is "feyzaN" with an N at the end and "feyza" is a common name where I live. 99 percent of the people don't hear the "N" at the end. I'm simply one of those Feyzas for them.
