@@rm25088Well, what's the verdict? I'd love to have the kind of funds necessary to fix a car up. The skills - I'm good; the dollars - not so much! 😂 Someday maybe. I'd love a late model foxbody & a g-body Buick(or Olds.). Those from my younger years. 1977 baby, so I remember all these nice old steel bodies, chrome bumpered, rear wheel drive GM cars of the days. I had a few $100 beater's in the late 90's. Good times!

Steve, thank you for this video, and I'm throwing every good vibe I have your way for your recovery. Backstory for this car: this was my best friend's car in high school/college. It spent a lot of time running around southern NH and central Mass in 1990-1994 (lots of time at Monadnock Speedway and Riverside Park, as his dad ran a NASCAR Modified). It was repainted in 1991 or 1992 after a fender bender. Engine got an rebuild, and the turbo impeller shaft snapped at some point, but I think it got fixed. But it being a G-body, the rear frame rails got soft, patched, then soft again. So it ended up in a family member's field with the idea of "fixing it up" once he got some space. Well, time passed, and it was supposed to be used for a street stock, then the family member passed and it was gone. Fast forward to this spring, and I'm poking on Steve's channel. Light blue Buick Regal...turbo...cool. With Revenger tires on the front...which I remembered because I'm that kind of nerd...and I kind of remembered the turbines being his snow tire wheels....send my friend an email with the link...friend remembers the brown steering wheel wrap. So he digs and finds the title to the car and his spare keys (NH didn't issue titles on 10 year old cars at the time, so he kept the old title). Bernardston Auto Wrecking gets called, and the VIN confirmed as his car. So we made a visit, with the hope of dragging it home and bringing it back to life. Turns out the Bernardston Auto Wrecking family is distantly related to my friend's family, which is how they ended up with it. The spare keys worked in the locks. And we could tell it got some road time by somebody else, as there was some all-thread holding the rear bumper and frame together, and the But the seats were only attached by carpet. The Harbor Freight aluminum "racing" jack we dragged out to the "back 40" of the yard punched through the frame when we tried to look underneath. The roof had a ripple all the way across. We stared at it, we took pictures, we pondered different strategies to do something with it -- but realized the Regal was probably best off returning to the earth in this quiet corner of the salvage yard.

I was a mechanic at a Buick dealer when those were introduced. Many of us were thrilled with the "new" technology, and were glad to see performance coming back after the detuning that took place during the 70's. But they really didn't sell that many of these, compared to the standard Regals. I guess most folks didn't think the additional performance was worth the cost.

I learned to drive in one of these. My high school had a few of these borrowed from a local dealer that they used for driver ed. They all had the extra panic brake pedal installed for the passenger. I had 2 girls in my unit, and we took turns driving with the football coach in the front seat and the other 2 cowering in terror in the back. Coach used that panic brake A LOT, and he used to refer to that hood ornament as a pedestrian sight. Fun times.

Little skimpy hoses on 2023 gas pumps can barely reach that center fill gas inlet, I have to maneuver to just the right spot to gas up my '69 Skylark convertible, what a pita. My MIL gave me this exact same car around 1986, hers had AC and 2 tone blue. The camshaft was soft and had flattened itself out, so the car was mine. I had the engine rebuilt, drove it a couple years and the camshaft flattened again. These were also a great target for car thieves, you could break into the steering column with a light tap from a hammer, push down a rod with a screwdriver, and be off to the races in anybody's Regal or Cutlass. Mine was stolen off a street corner in South Philly one night. Because of a locking gas cap and the tank being almost on E, the miscreants didn't get far. After that, I never filled the tank more that 1/4 full. But it was a great car and I still miss it.

Hi Steve, good video! I knew someone who bought a brand new Buick Regal Turbo 3.8 Liter 4 barrel. To the right side of the steering column on the instrument cluster, is the V6 three stage illuminated Turbo Power indicator. Far left: "Economy", center: "Four barrel carburetor secondaries activated" (or open you might say) and far right: Turbo activated. The four barrel carburetor temperature had to open first before the turbo would activate, and the engine had to be up to full operating temperature before any of this would function. Not a bad car for the late 1970s/early 1980s. With all due respect; GM, Ford, Chrysler where into the politics of vehicle emissions. It's not the emission control(s) that rob power, it's the lean air/fuel mixture that robs power. Please reply. Dave...

50% chance I worked on the 2nd body Fisher Body South Unit in Flint MI. The early builds had an aluminum deck lid that rarely exited the factory without damage. The early turbos were also problems due to the lack of an inner cooler

My mom had an 85 Buick Regal when I was a kid, she also had a Dodge Shadow, the car next to the Regal you're showing--hers wasn't a convertible though.

I went to a sleep study doctor and the subject of cars came up. He said he has a Grand National he used to race but got too expensive. I looked up his name and a video popped up. He ran 9:70s in 2012 in the stock block category.

Interesting that a sleep doctor would own "a sleeper" muscle car! The only thing that would make it better would be if he raced a less conspicuous Turbo-T Regal! Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

@@SteveMagnante My optician (who I will see Friday) drives a Hellcat. Turns out he loves to work on his own car. He shook my hand and said, "Great chatting. Looking forward to seeing you next year and talking cars again". One of my other doctors drove a 1972 Trans Am and realized what he had after he sold it back to his friend's dad who sold it to him.

Friends had one of these cars. They hurt the turbo engine at 100k miles. The price of fixing - replacing the turbo engine was out of their $$ range. With several warnings on lower power, we replaced the turbo engine with a N/A 3.8 engine.. They were not happy with the lower power of the non turbo engine

@@will7its I bought mine in v nice cosmetic condition in 2000. I installed a DIY ram air induction system consisting of sheet metal dryer vent tubing joined with duct tape. It led up from a rectangular inlet below the bumper to the air intake of the air cleaner. Before, I measured 14 mpg highway. After, 18 mpg. Same highway course. I was surprised by the improvement. Filled up before and after the highway leg. Should have been built that way. Smog pump/egr setup really hurt performance in that era.

@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt Yeah, his might have been clogged or smogged, I didnt know anything about turbos back then. Nice job on the ram air.

Ive always wondered why Buick was so invested in the metric system. In the 70s they were the only GM division to adopt it and stayed with it since. They also spelled it "Litre" at the beginning and spell it "Liter" now. Even the Buick marketing brochure you showed spelled it Liter, but the car badging says Litre..

GTO's in the late 60's had 6.6 badging for the 400.

1977 and up Trans Ams used the "LITRE" call out on the hood scoop as well, depending on the engine chosen.

Cool find. My second car was a 82 Regal (after a 1980 Grand Prix). Both had the plain 3.8 V6. I was looking around my local junkyard one day and spotted a Regal with the "Sport Coupe" badging, and immediately snagged them to put on my normal Regal, lol.

There's that Freightliner Classic XL in the background again...since I own a 2006 model, I'd like to know the story on it. Anyway, back to the subject of this video, the mother of a high school friend of mine had a 78 or so turbo Regal (this was in the mid 80s). Hers was silver/charcoal two tone with a red bucket seat/console shifter interior. I don't know how well it performed because she never let us take it out. It was definitely a nice looking car though.

I remember the Grand National being a very big deal back in the day and as a Buick fan I wanted one but they were nearly unobtanium for a young working class man. Fast forward to today and the 3.6liter LXF family of engines is putting out 325hp in atock form in the Camaro and with aftermarket turbocharging people are seeing over 400hp. Not to shabby for 217ci. Still it started with Buick and it hurts to see that Regal and its 3.8 turbo sitting forgotten in the bush.
