I have a Plymouth Voyager 95 , 2.5 engine. Done a lot of work to it and probably have one of the only running 4 cylinders in the state (have not seen another on the road). Love the van and it gets a bunch of looks. Still looking for a third row seat though.

Nothing quite like a cup of coffee and a JYC to start the day. I recall when minivans grew in the latter 90s. We had a Venture. I had a hard time explaining to my father in law that it was a minivan. Thank you sir, keep healing ~ Chuck

My Dad gave me his Chevy Venture. About 5 years ago he loved that minivan. He bought it brand new. When he always got close to 100,000 miles. He said time to get rid of it. He bragged about the space in the back take out the third seat fold the middle. You could put a refrigerator in there. They are very roomy . Great Vehicles. 👍

I had a 1988 Reliant K with that 2.2L It was bullet-proof and easy to work on. My brother had a 1990 Dodge Omni with the same engine; when one of us had an engine problem, we'd park side by side and swap parts until the problem migrated. Loved that car!

Steve, my parents had an 88 voyager until 2015. I recall the parts books at Walmart in the early 90s showed the filters and bulbs under Plymouth "Truck". I assumed these things were considered trucks until "minivan" became it's own vehicle type.

My parents had a blue one just like that, it also had a big storage compartment under the front passenger seat. When the Voyager model came out they got one of those as well so they could travel to different states to see us and our families. Both Vans had well over 300,000 dependable miles on them that they put on.

One day closer for your return to the yard. As stated last time: Correct, Mr. Sperlich and Mr. Iacocca tried to sell Mr. Ford II on the minivan, but he scoffed at it, probably thinking (somewhat incorrectly) that it would steal wagon sales. Mr. Ford was an 1156 bulb in an LED world---not the brightest one in the string and the company's problems back then can be squarely placed on his shoulders. Of course, the minivan was a sales success at Chrysler and in 1986, the wretched Aerostar was cobbled together at Ford and was nothing like the minivan at Chrysler. GM had the Astro and Safari and those too weren't what a Chrysler product was. Mssrs. Iacocca and Sperlich were smiling ear to ear when the product came out at Chrysler, causing GM and Ford to scramble (and fail) to catch them in the sales of these products. Yes, today we have the Pacifica, which is the minivan of choice for rentals at Enterprise and others. We often rent Pacificas on our business trips because they seat a lot of people and accommodate a lot of luggage. They also ride nicely and get good fuel mileage. I'd never buy one, but they have their purpose. Yup, the minivan (and mostly all of Chrysler's front wheel drive products, imports excepted) were "Sperlich Specials" and based on the K-car design. Actually to create confusion, there WAS an "H" and "K" model within the "S" body. Sometimes, they would use those codes in the parts catalog to differentiate parts between the divisions (Dodge and Plymouth, or Chrysler in the case of the Town and Country). Yes, Chrysler used "alphabet soup" like GM did with their models. You have to know their parts system or you'll be left in the dust. Correct, 1989-1990 on the turbo 2.5L. Correct, the importance of getting it in a regular garage, and the sliding door to get in out of it in mall parking lots and the like were important. It was also one of the first/primary uses of "focus" groups to develop the product. No VIN, can't win, but the 10th digit of the VIN would be an "L" for the 1990 model year and it was assembled either in St. Louis, MO (Fenton) which operated from 1959 to 2009 or Windsor, Ontario Canada which opened in 1928 and still operates today under Stellantis. It also still produces the minivan. No tag, can't brag, but possible code B32 Light Spectrum Blue exterior paint.

I was getting some welding done on my Austin Mini the first time I saw one. Me and the welding shop owner drove the salesman's minivan on a 20 mile loop, with him burbling away about it, abandoning the shop and my car. It needed more power and gears, but you could immediately see this was the future. Station wagons days were numbered. You rode high, with fantastic vision over traffic. The pure utility of it, without the 8 mpg penalty of fullsized vans and pickups, of the time, was crystal clear. Like Steve said, it fit everywhere a car did and steered and rode like a car, no truck or FS van rough ride or poor handling. At the time, it was a true game changer. It was great to see Cheeseler stay out in front of the competition, eventually eliminating Chevy and Ford as competition, as they quietly bowed out of the market completely. Another real nod to their dominance in this market, was Volkswagen's first foray into the market being just a rebadged Chrysler with the words Routon on the slightly modified nose and tail. For every year of it's production it outsold all other foreign and domestic minivans combined. A couple of years ago I noticed the hwy mileage for a Honda Civic was only 4 mpg better than an almost 300 HP Dodge Caravan. Talk about have your cake and eat it too. Screw the Pacifica and it's fancier style, the Caravan was the right size for North America IMO. My buddy's wife took the team to practice, came home. The seats" disappeared" in seconds, went to Home Depot, put ALL the drywall sheets, etc inside, closed the hatch and drove home dry in pouring rain. Try that with your 5 foot pickup bed, in the rain.
@jaybeemhardscrote7466

Uh Volkswagen basically invented the minivan, the Routan was certainly not their first foray into the segment. More like their 4th!

@malcolmhamilton5200 5 ай бұрын
I meant the fact that the number two foreign car manufacturer(vying hard to be #1 before the diesel scandal), chose the Chrysler minivan, to dip their toe into the modern minivan market Iacocca invented, was a nod to Chrysler's dominance. I do remember the microbus and the long, long, long wait for 60 mph, but they really are seperate of minivans, in a class of vehicle all their own. My Scottish uncle used their pickup version as delivery vehicles for his joinery(carpentry) business in the 70s and who hasn't seen a camper conversion of them too? Owned dozens of different and specialty vehicles since the mid seventies. Never considered a microbus as they're just too slow to be in every day traffic, particularly nowadays IMO.

@malcolmhamilton5200
@malcolmhamilton5200 5 ай бұрын
@@tomm1109 Yeah, they filled a niche the FWD minivans couldn't, for towing with 3/4s of a 350 and their tougher transmissions. My brother had a Safari and it got much better mileage than the POS Nissan Quest he replaced it with. There was more welded metal in the back doors than original, the way they rusted. Other problem was the front ends they shared with the S10s. One buddy changed the entire front suspension and steering four times over it's life. The oil pan rusted out, lost the oil and seized the engine on my Sister in law. To the Safari's credit she drove an additional 250 miles after the oil idiot light came on. My brother dropped $2,600.00 on rebuilding the engine(in 96') but got an additional 7 years out of it and sold it on later. Only minivans I ever heard that didn't overheat and cook their trannies towing, those Safaris. Every other brand, including the Venture would crap the bed(transmission) towing.

Although I'm not a fan of front wd, it was a comfortable ride on road trips, and easy to drive. We drove it from sw Florida up to Long Island to visit family once and it was snowing when we arrived on Easter Sunday. It did quite well in the snow. I remember in the early 90s a co-worker with a 2.5 turbo minivan ran pretty strong. Had a five speed. It wasn’t as fast as my Mustang, but it was a whole lot quicker than other minivans regardless of who’s badge was on it. I briefly drove a LeBaron with the turbo. Didn’t realize it had a turbo. It was a dog until it hit 30 and overcame the turbo lag and took off. Surprised me. Anyway Steve, you make stuff interesting that we once despised. I am a station wagon guy myself but wouldn't shake a stick at a minivan. I went for a mid size SUV that suits me well, a Toyota but it gives me the feel of an uplifted wagon. A lot of people think they are soulless but I don't want anything else modern from any automaker out on the road these days. The Chrysler minivans were a staple in my neck of the woods.. lots of Chrysler families.. and in my opinion were the most desirable of them all. My good friend in the mid 90's bought a fairly clean Caravan dirt cheap identical to that one there, it had two bench seats and that was it. The four cylinder was a dog but it got her around for awhile when she needed it. Good to see you you back Steve and getting better.

With a big cheeky smile on her face. 😊 When the door was opened a voice wiuld come on the speakers saying "the door is ajar." Thats all i ever heard it saying. And of course the default retort was always "No car, its not a jar, its a door." 😁 Today you'll be hard pressed to find that model in a convertible. They're apparently rare as hens teeth.

Working at Enterprise Rent a car, The current version of Chrysler's Grand Town and country or Pacifica are rarely on the lot for long. They ride wonderfully, are comfortable have plenty of guts, and still get mid 20's MPG. Seem well made, have oodles of room, and their stow and go seating is really cool. They started a trend that continues to this day. I still have my 2004 Sienna that I bought new and still would trust on a couple thousand mile jaunt any where (175k)

I wanted my parents to get a minivan so much back then. My friends parents had them and I hated being stuffed in their a body buick century wagon. They wouldnt though cuz of safety. They were afraid of us kids being able to get out in the event of a collision cuz the sliding door was only on 1 side. They were afraid of side impact or the van flipping onto the sliding door side and kids being trapped. Im sure that did happen too! By the time the dual sliding doors came out in 96 they didnt need a minivan anymore. I never lost my love for minivans though and today I have an odyssey.

I owned a brown 1987 Plymouth Voyager. Rather than having captain's seats up front and two rear seats, it had a 40/60 bench seat in the front and one rear seat that held three passengers. That made for a decent sized cargo area in the rear without having to remove a third seat. It didn't have air conditioning when I bought it: Chrysler had an AC kit for the dealer to install it, which was what I had done. Provisions for mounting some of the components in the AC kit were installed from the factory. My '87 had a 2.6L Mitsubishi engine with California emissions that produced 104 HP.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but i'm pretty sure they didn't make a bench seat in any minivan. a 40/60 split seat is a bench seat that allows each person to move their part of the seat independently. No minivan from Chrysler EVER had that setup.

I had a 1983 reliant K and the thing that was weird is that, it was a small car which drove and ride like a big, full cars.

I suspect the Ford engine in the back is a 240. Intake manifold removes in a different way than the cheapo 200/250 that Ford threw into a Falcon or Maverick

All the fwd mopars on this platform were great. Although when they switched to the v6 the transmission became a weak point
@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 4 ай бұрын
It wasn't the 6 cylinder that made the transmission bad, it was the new ultradrive 4 speed automatics that were used by Chrysler around the time the 6 cylinder was put into use.

A regular V6 Chrysler Pacifica minivan is great to rent for a long trip with 5 to 7 people. The hybrid version is very unreliable. It went station wagons to minivans to SUVs for the most sales.

Too bad Iacocca was a "con" man especially with having no regards to his customers. My parents brought a '85 Voyager brand new. We kept it in a climate controlled garage, changed the oil every 2k miles. About a month into ownership the computer failed. The 2.6 burned a quart every 300 miles, tans axle and engine mounts failed after 40k miles. The interior trim fell apart after two years. The side mirrors were held together with rubber bands. The cv joints failed after 50k miles. After 8 years, we ended up replacing it with '86 Cutlass. The minuki carburator was problematic.

Those engines were trash.my dad had one in mid 90s it was a1990 model, it left our whole family stranded in the middle of nowhere for two days with a blown motor,cost a new block 2800.00$ in 95 was no joke.
