@@finkalo that can't be right. It's just magnesium crystals. There's no water in them, otherwise the crystals would dissolve. That's why there was no reaction.

@@finkalo it can't. The chemical formula is MgSO4 to get water you need H.
@bluefernlove
@bluefernlove 3 жыл бұрын
@@finkalo yeah but you have to take into account that salts are usually obtain through evaporation. I guess there's always going to be some water in them, depending on the process they were obtained. But the water is part of the molecular structure. In this case, the resin is too thick to act as a solvent for the crystals. And the heat produced by the resin is not enough to cause the salt to release the water.

I mix epson salt in my resin when I make my Geode keychains, coaster and wine butlers. If you put enough it gives it this cool effect then texture
@notebookluvr
@notebookluvr 4 жыл бұрын
Does it compromise the strength of the piece? I'm thinking areas with a lot of epsom salts where the resin is displaced would make it weak.
@tarafeliciano8287
@tarafeliciano8287 3 жыл бұрын
In a lot of videos I see people making geodes using crushed glass. Literally has the same effect but much cheaper. You could try pouring the resin over the salts like you would sand, so you don't have that layering. Plus for coaster, it would give it texture to keep the cup from sliding.

Thanks Steve! I love your videos, even these older ones. I just finished putting resin with all kinds of mica powders in the grooves of some dragonfly wind chimes. I'm going to fill the backs and the hanging rings with this epsom salt technique. I plan on using translucent resin pigments with these. I think they will look awesome! Thanks again for always experimenting and showing us the results. I have learned a ton from your channel.

I have buckets and buckets and buckets of micah. They're Mica chips that I get out of rocks. It's a long story but I smash up granite boulders in my yard for my succulent soil. Anywho, I got addicted to saving the mica and separating the sheets. I have a couple cups where I made it finer so it's really crystal clear and glittery and then I have buckets of more chunky pieces and separated thinner pieces. I even started sifting it to make a really really fine glitter, if you touch it it feels like silk. I also have black mica. I wonder if I could sell this? I mean I have sold some of it on mercari but it kind of seems like there's a market for this stuff. I save it because I'm addicted to saving it LOL I put it in everything I put it in my succulent pots as top dressing I mix some of it for extra minerals in my succulent soil I sprinkle it all over my outside gardens, there's a million uses for it.
