It's not the negative side of random, it's the negative side of certain fans who shout loudly that "this isn't proper Doctor Who" simply because it doesn't fit in with their headcanon. I mean, I have problems with certain DW episodes (Kill The Moon and Forest of the Night in particular), as do most fans, but I don't go screaming my head off and being obnoxiously unpleasant simply because I have problems with them.

Is not this fandom - it's any fandom, every fandom! Look at football fans. They're not backward in coming forward if their favourite team perform badly - there's fights on the streets if it's a bad game. Social media gives access to everyone else so we get to view the whole gamut of human opinion - by writing stuff down online we see the inner workings and raw frustration or delight of a person so when they express something it doesn't come out how it would if they were to do it in person.

I personally loved RTD and Steven Moffat. Their very differences is what I like about them. Moffat is my personal favorite because I prefer his style of storytelling and Eleven is my Doctor, but they are both great in my opinion and brought something special to the show. People are gonna do their usual 'Omg bring back RTD, Moffat sucks' but I'm actually kind of sick of it. I love RTD, he brought Doctor Who back from cancellation, doing the impossible, however, people have to give credit to Moffat. Under Moffat, he has overseen the succesful continuation of the revivied series of Doctor Who. Furthermore, he has written 19/25 of the highest rated episodes of all time on iMDB. Sure, he had a few misteps as a writer, but who hasn't? Moffat has personally written some of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever including 'The Eleventh Hour', 'The Pandorica Opens', 'Heaven Sent', 'The Doctor Falls', 'World Enough and Time', 'A Christmas Carol', 'Blink', 'Day of the Doctor' and so many more. When it was announced Moffat became showrunner, there are emails from RTD to him saying that under anyone else, Davies would be worried about the show's future and Moffat was the only person he trusted with the show. People need to stop saying that Moffat ruined the show. If anything, Moffat has garunteed that Doctor Who will never truly die. If the show had been cancelled after RTD, it would be seen as a 'Well, we tried' thing and the fate of the show was all up to him. However, by showing more showrunners have continued, and the show is still alive means it's never truly going to end.

I wouldn't say the show will never end, I mean, what if something bad happens and we all die? Who's left to make all the Doctor Who? I think the show will probably last as long as humanity does though or at the very least, longer than I'll ever live, even if there is an occasional hiatus while the show waits for a new ideas and new talent to revive it.

I think Moffat definitely did a lot of good for the show, but also a lot of bad that shouldn't be overlooked. Just saying what I think here, you don't need to agree with it. I think Moffat started out very strong, but over the course of series 6 and 7 a lot of his episodes felt disappointing to me. Capaldi's era felt like it was gradually getting better, and I think series 10 was the one that convinced me Moffat still knew what he was doing. He's written genius things, but the occasional misstep happened a little more occasionally for him than for RTD, if you ask me. In general I prefer RTD's era (not denying it had its mistakes back then, too, but less frequent in my opinion) and I think Moffat has made a lot of mistakes, but to call everything he's left behind on DW horrible is wrong, too. He didn't kill the show, but sometimes he did come a little closer to that than what I felt comfortable with.

+pulk pulkman's Strictly speaking I don't disagree with your first line but using using good and bad is too black and white for me. I would say that he did a number of things that a lot of people didn't like, not that it was bad, because obviously a lot of people also loved those same things. Obviously, it comes down to the whole personal preference thing. Season 6 and 7 weren't helped by the breaks (which we know he had no control over), similar to how the last big writer's strike affected all the US shows a few years back. As it's in that same area I found it very interesting to see hear Moffat say how the War Doctor came to be and how different it is to what a lot of people assumed, i.e. increasing the incarnations so he could deal with the 'final' regen. That's the first time I've heard him mentioned that much detail and I can understand now why it happened, one thing inevitably led to another. I think Moffat and RTD had about the same number of missteps and mistakes, just very different ones. They both tried to do things (and add things) differently to the classic era, of which some worked and some didn't. Overall, both did an excellent job with my preference going towards Moffat. The yearly casting change was one of the negatives about RTD's era, along with the non-regen regen. For Moffat, I think his low points were relying on the reset button too much for both plot and characters (although I understand his reason behind it) and creating a couple of season long teasers/questions that didn't really go anywhere, even if I liked the 'answer' they could have been so much more.

finally, someone mentions the massive shift in cinematography that happened when Moffat took over! i've always noticed that as one of the major differences between his era and RTD's time, but hardly anyone discusses it. for the record, i adore the cinematic take on Doctor Who that Moffat's directors brought to the show, i couldn't stand the made-for-tv look of RTD's episodes.

Yes, he did miss a few times but then so has every showrunner and I'm sure Chibbers will too. I found it very interesting to finally hear the full details of how the War Doctor came about. It's very different to what a number of 'fans thought, i.e. that it was deliberately to get to the 'final' regen. This just goes to show that it was more about necessity and one choice leading logically to the next.

Incredible guy, and hilarious too. It's a shame he had to deal with so much negativity instead of dialogue. I know most of you won't probably hear this but... listen people, don't get divisive over trivialities, share some friendly fan discussions now and then, don't make comparisons about who's the best Doctor (you don't choose your favourite sons too? Or do you?) or who's great and who's not, don't go on blind hatred for the show just because it didn't exactly hit the notes you wanted, be critical in a constructive way. I applaud to the immense effort and criativity this Doctor Who team has put to deliver this complex, magical (and continuously evolving) universe to us and not everyone has the potential to deal with such writing luggage of 50+ years, so applaud to them too if you love the show, because without them, the show wouldn't be here for us and for people who need some light in a dark world. I would have liked to hear more about the post-Eccleston discussions on The Day of the Doctor. Moffat says that he brought up other Doctors, but I imagine McGann was the only serious choice. Whilst I am glad that Hurt ultimately took the role, it's a pity that the BBC was so against McGann.

really enjoying this interview so far, i’m about halfway through. the questions were surprisingly ‘non-corporate’ (I guess), meaning they challenged Steven on some of his creative mistakes which I wouldn’t usually expect the BBC to do. I’ve had my ups and downs with Steven as showrunner, I loved S5, 6 and 10, series 8 was okay, but I found Series 7 and 9 to be the poorest series since the revival (I seriously cannot stand most of series 7 in particular). I must admit, I did enjoy Russell’s era a fair amount more overall but I don’t think Moffat did a bad job by any means, I just thought Russell’s was excellent while Moffat’s was pretty good. It’s been my favourite TV show for over a decade so it would take something really bad for me to ever stop watching. I gained a lot of respect for Steven through this interview, and I appreciate his honesty and the way he accepted a lot of his mistakes as mistakes, which contrasts the usual perception he gets from a lot of who fans.

I saw Chibs showrun season 11 which was great but fans like you complained so he returned to the Moffat style of a POS and that's what we got with season 12 and that Dalek NYear special with all the Daleks acting dumb and leaving Earth. Moffat ruined DW forever. His episode by episode breakdown is just terrible. A terrible show runner, a bad writer under his own era, and a non-fan who hates Classic Who. I loathe him and his style of DW. Of course there are about 10 percent of his eight years that are good, even 10/10 episodes but that's not a great track record. He's the worst show runner in the history of TV.

Chibs wrote DINOs and I liked that and I thought season 11 was fantastic other than the spiders ep and the Ghost Monument which could have used more action. What Steven is saying about the DW fandom and social media, I really couldnt agree more! The online fandom has become so negative and toxic and nasty and its incredibly painful. The reason why Cons are different is just because the people spitting hateful comments online aren't actually fans of the show, they're just bored and need a way to make others feel bad. People pay huge amounts of money and time to go to Conventions out of love and passion. Hatred is just not strong enough, thank god.

I would love to know the real reason as to why Chris refused to be part of the 50th. Not only is he my favourite new series doctor but I feel the special could’ve been a little better with him present

+The Cypher Yes, to him it was just a job that he did for RTD, he wasn't a big fan and had only seen a few episodes. Personally, I think part of it as well was that he wasn't prepared in anyway for the reaction it got. He didn't want the extra spotlights on him. Then there was all the behind the scenes stuff going on as well. It also didn't help that after his run finished, and he was doing other work, every interviewer would bring up DW instead of his current project. He was polite about it (as he always is) but clearly wasn't interested which some took as rudeness.

He actually put himself forward for the role. He wasn't asked, he requested that he be considered, mainly because he liked RTD's work, and because he wanted to try a lighter role. In a radio interview he admitted that he clashed with certain (unnamed) individuals on the show, which is why he left so soon. He made a point of not naming them, because they weren't there to give their version of events. Shows what an incredibly courteous man he is. Such a shame it ended up that way though. Would have been lovely to have had him longer.

I would've love to see Chris and Paul Mcgann in the 50th too, with a few spoken lines. The regeneration from war doctor should've be been done properly.

Loving this long interview! It‘s very entertaining to hear about behind-the-scenes happenings from the showrunner. Plus, it‘s a lovely little goodbye present for us Whovians who really enjoyed the Moffat era. Eleven and the Ponds were my introduction to the show, and they‘ll probably always be my favourite Tardis team. Also, the interviewer is doing a great job. Thumbs up!

I had a lot of issues with Moffat when he went from a one off episode writer to actual series showrunner, but you can't deny he seems to have had a genuine passion and forethought behind how Doctor Who should be constructed on an episode level and an overarching series level. It's sad he didn't stick around to write some individual episodes here and there again, because I think without having the entire show on his back, we could get back to him at his greatest.

Moffat is responsible for both my favourite and least favourite series of the revival of doctor who, series 9 and series 7 respectively. He has his flaws as a show runner, mostly stemming from season long arcs that went nowhere, were left to speculation (such as the hybrid in series 9 which along with sleep no more are my two least favourite parts of that series) or were disappointing. That being said as a script writer he is my favourite, heaven sent, even from Moffat haters, is considered to be one of, if not the best episode of the series as a whole, personally it’s my favourite revival story and 3rd favourite story behind the enemy of the world and the caves of androzani. He, along with the actor himself, managed to turn my scepticism of the casting of capaldi into one of sheer gratitude, he’s my favourite revival doctor now, and as a whole is only outclassed by troughton. I’m gonna miss him and I hope he writes again for the series in the future, Chris has some massive shoes to fill and his previous episodes, unlike Steven’s before taking over, aren’t considered classics.. I barely remember dinosaurs on a spaceship or 42. However if he can write with the same emotional depth as he did in Pond Life then I will be very happy indeed.

I actually kinda liked the new dalek design and was kinda sad they weren't used more. I liked the idea of the daleks having different roles, kind of playing on various times when there have been dalek abominations who have other feelings other than hate for tactics which, if I remember, is established in the comics that such daleks were used during the time war.

John Hurt was a casting coup, the publicity was a big plus and the War Doctor was a clever idea well-realized as an older actor who could domineer over his younger (older?) selves. That said, Moffat wrote for 8 so well, it's a slight shame we never got to see him roar back more than he did. BBC could have been more accepting of that idea.

i will never be able to express how much magic doctor who brought into my life. it's literally one of the best shows out there. try finding a show as unique as this one. you can't, because it's not possible! I'm quite sad to see moffat go, but I know that I can't change it, and just hope that chris will come onto the show with new ideas! thank you, doctor who, for becoming so near and dear to my heart. :)

Matt Smith was my favourite Doctor. I don't know why Moffat gets so much criticism. Matt Smith's amazing performance as the Doctor with Moffats writing gave us the most iconic portrayal since Tom Baker. An actor is only as good as the script and the script is only as good as the actor. Matt Smith and Steve Moffat were the perfect combination and I don't think it will peak like that again.

Paul Charles Morris I've watched all of Matt Smith's episodes. Ok I admit Let's Kill Hitler wasn't the best episode but there are always weak episodes in any series no matter how good it is. But I have to disagree about Matt's portrayal as the old Doctor I thought he played that well it was a good last episode for him
