i just can't help but think that this whole aikido thing is BS, sure is better than nothing, also Seagal has gone from young, skinny, zero muscles to overweight since "under siege" 1 and 2, so how does that fits into the discipline of martial arts?? look at him here, look at his belly, he looks like he binged in miller highlife and hotdog leading up to this show, he did these take downs millions of time, he ask the guys "grab me here", you can see that, also he seems like bored, like doing errands like folding his laundry, it's such bs, sure the guy would kick my ass and yours but does he stand a chance against a 250 pound of muscle jiu jitsu or kickboxer?? i don't think so, i think the guy is just a lazy ass, that can't control his eating, he was accused of sexual assault countless times and he told for decades lies about working for the CIA, etc, the guy is a total disgrace, a clown.

This is a demonstration. I understand your point though. Martial arts are different that street fights in so far--and especially with Aikido-- as their aesthetic, philosophic, moral and martial dimensions. The principles (or Katas) in action among opponents are a language and communication which might resemblance a dance because, in the overall, the philosophical and moral principle is to harmonise during confrontation, never using force against force. Aikido, among many things, is about blending, getting off-line of the attack and knowing how to fall. Therefore, the purpose of the dance-like movements you see it is not self expression but self-defence. Flow and rolling are techniques to avoid injury and pain. Knowing when to fall and when to stop resisting can save you an arm. And yes, it works in the street.

The secret to Steven Seagal's technique is that he first imagines that all his adversaries are carrying a donut. So he tackles them, and disarms the imaginary donut safely without letting it fall to the ground. Truly a marvelous martial artist.

I love the flow of Aikido in contrast to the stiffness of Karate. Many of these joint locks and takedowns are also used in Filipino Martial Arts and Chinese Kung Fu. What I like about Aikido guys is they know how to fall and prevent themselves from serious injury. In many ways they are like stuntmen like Jackie Chan.

The problem with Sensei Seagal master of Aikido was this: bu the end of the 90s, he had reached all his goals: he earned a black belt, had married twice ( one with the woman in red ), had kids became an action hero and made millions, that's why he let himself go and started eating, that's my theory, his drive faided, bear in mind he made his first movie at 37,ne was already a master, married twice with kids, when he got rich and famous 10 years later had nothing left to prove

Everybody is commenting on Seagal nowadays. Well, this guy 1. Really devoted his life to martial arts and was a professional trainer in Aikido for many years before he went Hollywood (whether you like it or not) 2. He is known to be a very well trained Aikido practitioner (whether you like Aikido or not) 3. He made a career out of it, and I am pretty sure he was not chosen for his looks and acting capabilities 4. What have the rest of you done in Martial arts? I have been practicing all my life in Martial Arts and one thing I learned out of it is to NEVER judge what another man is doing, just focus on yourself and your technique. And you can learn something from anybody, even from a beginner....A good question from a new student has made me think on a technique and effectiveness more than any other circumstance in my life.

SASR Commander Actually many UFC fighters were brought up in rough areas e.g. in Brazil and have had numerous fights in the street no rules. I'm sure Steve could handle an average guy in the street but a pro athlete UFC fighter trying to hurt him he would be unlikely to stop. Look at demos of Aikido on here you never see them pulling of some throw or lock against someone really trying to Box them or take them down or Muay Thai kick them etc. In demos when they defend kicks or punches - a punch is leave the arm out technique and defence against kicks usually traditional Karate kicks. If you do Aikido back it up with other arts at least an art with strong striking.

People say it's fake because of the rolls they do afterwards. To roll is one of the things you learn first, if they didn't something would break. Try a simple wrist lock and turn on someone, they will stay static and if you apply pressure it will pop or break. Do that to someone who is trained they will move or roll to get back control of the wrist.

@aidakensuke
@aidakensuke 8 жыл бұрын
People like to missunderstand this on a regular basis. Aikido is not competetive in first place. The teaching isn't about winning a fight, but about creating balance. Of course you can't stand a chance agains pro-fighters, because that not what it's meant to be. Its more philosophy then actual martial-arts

Seagal was actually great at one time and earned a place in that being said. He certainly worked hard to obtain his stature. Boy has he let himself go....that is 100 pound weight gain and he is 6'5" inch tall, I met him, not to be taken to easily.

I get so sick of this guy bashing great action heroes. I was unaware that you must be a master fighting competitor in martial arts to make a great movie. I personally don’t care if any of the stars I grew up with can fight in real life or if they’ve won a championship. As it turns out I just cared about being entertained, and I was. Even by this guy and I have loved every second.

Very good point. it was disrespectful to skip the bow. also, to be honest, his technique is very sloppy. i know he is older now, but compare this to a video of Morihei Ueshiba in his later years. O-sensei kept great form and balance long after he was grey. Another person commented here that they can't really spar like in boxing, which is true, but the point of practicing is to build musscle memory. Segal is a recognized name, but he looks like he can barely walk in this video. I'd like to see him drop 50 lbs and get fit again. I wish him good luck.

***** Actually Gracies challenged Gene Lebell = Gene shat his pants realizing his fake tough guy image would get exposed. So he offered to fight Helio Grace rather than Rorion, Rickson or Royce. Gene claims to be 'The Toughest Man Alive' = gets one legit challenge and poos his pants. If attacked in the street you think 'oh my age' is a worthy excuse? Look at the way Gene moves, The Mummy moves better he may be physically strong but as an athlete he is nothing and a weak striker. You talk sheer flatulence, I stick to fact! Go look on here Hayward Nishioka sparring with Rickson Gracie, Hayward is top Judo guy and 20+ years older than Rickson yet he had no problem sparring him but Gene pooed his pants at the mere thought of getting exposed as a pretend tough guy.

Obviously not real combat, but I remember doing katas when I studied karate as a kid. The katas are demonstrations of the forms and moves in karate, usually done alone. I'm guessing this is the equivalent. It's a demonstration, not a fight tournament.

Nice choreography. I think most of us used to do something similar as kids with our friends, what boy didn't pretend to be a ninja at some point? This is the same thing, but with a higher level of production. Even seasoned martial artists know this isn't realistic in an actual fight. It's a neat demonstration, but that's all it is.

i just can't help but think that this whole aikido thing is BS, sure is better than nothing, also Seagal has gone from young, skinny, zero muscles to overweight since "under siege" 1 and 2, so how does that fits into the discipline of martial arts?? look at him here, look at his belly, he looks like he binged in miller highlife and hotdog leading up to this show, he did these take downs millions of time, he ask the guys "grab me here", you can see that, also he seems like bored, like doing errands like folding his laundry, it's such bs, sure the guy would kick my ass and yours but does he stand a chance against a 250 pound of muscle jiu jitsu or kickboxer?? i don't think so, i think the guy is just a lazy ass, that can't control his eating, he was accused of sexual assault countless times and he told for decades lies about working for the CIA, etc, the guy is a total disgrace, a clown.
