Making of Steven Spielberg's masterpiece: the 1971 DUEL movie, his first film, in 4K !
Alternate ending with 7 new and never seen camera angles of the scene when the truck falls of the cliff after chasing a car for over 1 hour !
Just for fun and to pay tribute to Spielberg's genius, I tried to recreate and remake the final truck crash scene with miniatures.
We built the Duel truck - Peterbilt 281 and tanker trailer - at 1:18 and 1:24 scale models, and the canyon movie set.
We create this SFX crash between the truck and the car with miniatures, no CGI, no VFX, except adding a little smoke !
3D print by protofusion.ras.ovh
Slow motion: shot at 240 fps then slowed down to 480 fps when editing
Never forget Carey Loftin, the incredible truck stuntman in the original film who jumped out of the truck just before it fell off the cliff. That's why the door is open !
And Dennis Weaver, that brave car driver ;)
In the Fabelmans movie, the young Steven Spielberg can be seen filming his model train crashing, we do almost the same with this vidéo ;)
Items I used to build it:
1/18 Peterbilt chassis: amzn.to/3FDR4uA
Tamiya Gold paint spray: amzn.to/3MKaaTR
Copper paint spray: amzn.to/3SiLMfk
Color Primer spray: amzn.to/3sbGhV8
Matte varnish spray: amzn.to/3SoauuT
Acrylic Paint Set: amzn.to/3Mk3hrO
Modeler tools kit: amzn.to/3tZ8L4Y
Weathering set: amzn.to/472YpQ8
Main truck and trailer colour: amzn.to/3QgoJPK

Fun! One of the difficulties with miniatures is that they usually don't seem to adequately model the effects of mass on materials. My eye can't help but think that a full tanker wouldn't bounce as much, but would have far greater deformity in both the ground, at impact points (especially the farthest fall) and in the tank itself. Buckling is likely at full scale but you would have to model in tinfoil, almost, to get the same ratio of mass to strength in a mini. Even the tires would feel more realistic if they burst upon impact, when the full weight of the tanker falls on them from several stories in height. But again, modelling in fragile rubber is a tough standard to demand. Anyway, it looked really good nonetheless!
@ghost307
@ghost307 Ай бұрын
Was it established in the film that the tanker was full?
@JoeOvercoat
@JoeOvercoat Ай бұрын
I suggest that there’s no reason for us to think that the tanker has any fuel in it.
@rotatingrecords
@rotatingrecords Ай бұрын
@@JoeOvercoat really doesn't matter if there was any fuel in it, the weight of the trailer and vessel would have very likely blown the tires off the wheels and cause significant damage to the structure of the trailer and vessel. that disregards all the other non-damage sustained during the impacts from the fall. doing things with miniatures is cool, but it's just not possible to do a good job replicating realistic results.

Looking at the shot of the car with it's intact roof at the bottom of the ravine my thought was "uhhh no the roof would have been crushed". I'm sure on the day. A second set up would be created with the vehicles showing more realistic destruction.

@mycroft16

Oh, this shot will ABSOLUTELY have CG. It isn't a bad thing. It is a tool. Jurassic Park uses practical and CG interchangeably and in the same shot all the time. A good director simply uses the tools correctly. Remember how Top Gun Maverik made a big deal of shooting practically? Yeah, it is one of the most CG heavy films ever. They flew real planes... but they were NOT FA-18s. Shots out the window of wingmen... those were just normal planes with tracking markers on wings/tail that then got replaced in post with 100% CG FA-18s. They just used the real plane as lighting reference. Even most of the parts of the actors own plane out the window are CG. Any film claiming no CG or all practical is really saying, we did a really good job of blending all our CG in. Fury Road also has a massive crap ton of CG despite practical filming.

💐THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the Salvation of the last day that Christ brought in the second and last incarnation of His new and holy name" (This may be a reminder for most people of God's words from Genesis: "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness." Suppose God is saying that "let us" make man in "our " picture, then "ours" shows two or more; since He said "ours," then God is not only one. In this way, man begins to think generally of different persons, and from these words came the idea of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. At the time Moses wrote Genesis, it was after the creation of mankind following the creation of the world. In the beginning, when the world, Moses did not exist yet. And it was a long time before Moses wrote the Bible, so how could he possibly know what God said in heaven? He was unaware of how God created the world. What is written in the Old Testament is the work of Jehovah, a phase of the work of God Himself for ushering in the Age of Law. This is the work of God, where as He spoke, it happened, and as He commanded, it remained. When all is said and done, whether it is the Father or the Son, They are one Spirit, not divided into separate persons. When man speaks of separate persons, does it not reflect God? Jehovah is the Spirit, and also a substance of Jesus. Doesn't the Spirit of God simply carry out the work of the Spirit from different perspectives?" Because of this, there is no distinction between persons.) Almighty God said This can be a REMINDER for most PEOPLE of GOD'S WORDS from GENESIS: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Suppose GOD says "we" will CREATE MAN in "our" IMAGE, then "we" SHOWS TWO or MORE; since He SAID "we," then GOD is NOT one. IN THIS WAY, MAN BEGAN TO THINK GENERALLY OF DIFFERENT PERSONS, AND FROM THESE WORDS HAD THE IDEA OF THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. What then does the Father look like? What does the Son look like? And what does the Holy Spirit look like? ☀️🙏 Could it be that the present man was made in the image of the one who was put together from the three? Then is the image of man like that of the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit? 🙏 WHICH of the persons of GOD is the image of MAN? This idea of MAN is ABSOLUTELY WRONG and NONSENSE! It can only separate one God from several Gods. 🙏 AT THE TIME Moses WROTE GENESIS, it was AFTER MANKIND WAS CREATED AFTER THE CREATION OF THE WORLD. In the BEGINNING, when the WORLD began, Moses did NOT exist. And IT TOOK A LONG TIME FOR MOSES TO WRITE THE BIBLE, so HOW could he possibly KNOW WHAT GOD SAID in HEAVEN?🙏☀️ He is UNCONSCIOUS of HOW GOD CREATED THE WORLD. 🙏 In the OLD TESTAMENT of the Bible, there is NO mention of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, only the TRUE GOD, JEHOVAH, is PERFORMING His WORK in ISRAEL. ☀️ He is CALLED by different NAMES in the CHANGING TIMES, but this DOESN'T PROVE that each NAME REFERES to a different PERSON. Therefore, then wouldn't there be countless persons of God? What is WRITTEN in the OLD TESTAMENT is the WORK of JEHOVAH, A PHASE of the WORK of GOD HIMSELF for the START of the Age of Law. This is GOD'S WORK, where ACCORDING to what He SPOKE, it happened, and ACCORDING to what He commanded, it REMAINS. 🙏💐 AT NO TIME DID JEHOVAH SAY HE WAS THE FATHER WHO WOULD COME TO EFFECT THE WORK, or did He even foretell the coming of the Son to redeem mankind. WHEN IT CAME TO THE TIME OF JESUS, it was only mentioned that GOD became MAN to REDEEM ALL MANKIND, NOT that the SON CAME. ☀️ Because the times are not the same and the work that God Himself carries out is also different, He has to carry out His work within different kingdoms. In this way, the identity He represents is also different. PEOPLE BELIEVE JEHOVAH IS THE FATHER OF JESUS, but JESUS DOESN'T REALLY ACKNOWLEDGE, saying: "We were never identified as Father and Son; I and the Father in heaven are one. The Father is in Me and I am in the Father; when men see the Son, they see the Father in heaven." ☀️😪 When all is said and done, whether it is the Father or the Son, They are one Spirit, not divided into separate persons. By the time man attempts to explain, matters are complicated by the idea of different persons, as well as the relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. WHEN MAN TALKS ABOUT separate persons, does it not reflect GOD? 🙏🔅 Man even ranks persons as first, second, and third; these are all mere human understandings, unworthy of reference, and utterly unreal! If you ask him: "How many are there in God?" He will say that God is the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: the one true God. If you ask him: "Who is the Father?" He will say: The Father is the Spirit of God in heaven; He rules over all, and He is the Lord of heaven." "Then is Jehovah the Spirit?" ☀️ He will say: "Yes!" If you ask him afterwards, "Who is the Son?" He will say that Jesus is the Son, anyway: "Then what is the story of Jesus? From whom did He come?" He will say: "Jesus was born of Mary through the shadowing of the Holy Spirit. " ☀️ "Then is not His substance also Spirit? Does His work also represent the Holy Spirit? Jehovah is the Spirit, and also a substance of Jesus. Now in the last days, it goes without saying that the Spirit still works; how did He become different persons? Doesn't the Spirit of God just carry out the work of the Spirit from different perspectives? Because of this, there is no difference between personas. 🙏 From "Is There a Trinity?" Fulfilled in "In the beginning He was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). (Ezekiel 2:9-10). (Rev. 19:9,13) 📩 All who have "ears to listen" are led to what the Spirit of God is saying in His lowered and built kingdom/Church engraved with His new name, His totality, the ownership of this disposition, "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD "💐 fulfillment from what was said He to Peter 2,000 years ago recorded in (Matthew 16:18-19). His Coming is the fulfillment of all that was prophesied in the great book of Revelation, so the last "Salvation" He brought the whole truth, the way for eternal life. So the "victorious" ones who will receive them are the wise "virgins" because as recorded in the prophecy of His return no one knows it except the one who will receive it! So "come" and come to His kingdom/church standing in the holy place in the air/KZbin! This is also a fulfillment from the book of (Isaiah 2:2/9:6) which He first fulfilled in His first incarnation. 📥 "They say with a loud voice, "Salvation comes from the Lamb, and from our God who sits on the Throne!" (Rev. 7:10). ... and (Isaiah 2: 2 / 9:6) "On the Last Day, the mountain on which Jehovah's temple stands will stand out above all the mountains. All nations will flock there. " . "For a baby boy is born to us. The rule will be given to him; and he shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." 💌

I have to admit that I thought this was the "behind the scenes" shoot for this scene. It has been a long time since I saw the real movie. The slow-motion sequence made it realistic. But then, I saw the movie version, and a real truck and car were used. The REAL vehicles buckled, bent, and deformed much more. The key thing that gave it away was the heavy exhaust smoke in the REAL scene. That was a great setup you did. The movie, for its time, was outstanding. The same for jaws. Now that Steve has the money and backing, it really shows how great he can make a move look. Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers were superb.

Modern CGI looks way better than miniatures. The problem is that if the CGI is perfectly realistic, nobody notices that it's CGI. The viewer only notices CGI when it has been done badly. Take Top Gun Maverick, for example: more than 90% of the airplanes are CGI. Even the shots filmed inside the cockpits are CGI, except for the faces. And yet nobody noticed. (They actually used real planes to shoot the movie, but the shots were only there to get the correct exposure and the planes were later replaced with CGI planes.) Even though more than half of the shots in this movie contain CGI, a lot of people who don't know anything about the production of modern movies have said that they like the fact that the movie has so little CGI. If you don't believe me that CGI is now perfectly realistic, just take a look at the series "No CGI is just invisible CGI" on KZbin.

Modern CGI looks perfectly realistic.
@emanuel82
@emanuel82 Ай бұрын
@@Li-Nuss A combination of real shots and CGI is ideal. I have always believed in that. And the new AI-technology uses the same principle. It base the result on real shots. But the problem is so many movies relies only on CGI. The first Jurassic Park for example looks more realistic than the newer movies with only CGI.

A lot of reactions in this video really surprised me. People who think they are pros because they noticed “the truck doesn’t deform” (hint: even children know miniatures don’t deform, noticing it doesn’t make you a pro), yet they believe the 3D tools they use are super real (but they ignore the physics in those tools are inaccurate approximations of professional FEM/FEA packages). They probably don’t know what the battle of Hoth is, nor how it was filmed. They probably never heard of Harryhausen, and if they saw any of his scenes, they will say that’s a joke and they can do it better. In other words, they have no idea what FX is, they think the secret is the tool and not the person. Said this, kudos to the people who made this remake. Very well done. Even wheels vibrate at impact (I thought for a moment you were tricking using footage from the original movie), and even some parts detach. I also appreciate that shot in which you show the pin that connects the tank with the truck, it’s like you are saying “hey look, we used models”. Very well done, guys.
