Mayor Dewey taught Steven a important lesson. You can’t always control what happens but you can how they feel about it. He realized how to be a leader in the face of adversity.

I also feel it shows the human side of the situation. The things everyone in town have to think of when a "monster of the week" shows up and puts into perspective how very different he is actually compared. A lot of points in the series highlight the human side of steven to show how much of his world is split between human and gem. Like with his dad being the counterpoint of reality to the gems. Habing a episode to show how the town itself is going to react to a major threat is genuis when building this side of stevens character, while it only seems like a possible filler episode without the context.

For anyone confused, they basically skipped like four episodes that are supposed to be in between Political Power and the last episodes they reacted to, specifically Open Book, Shirt Club, Say Uncle, and Story for Steven, so they didn't watch the finale episodes in the wrong order, no major spoilers were given away as far as I can tell.

These episodes are very mature, especially with how Garnet is destabilized. That moment will forever scare me like Steven sees her sort of explode like that right in front of him.

I grew up in a very disaster-prone place, where we frequently lost power and sometimes road access for long periods (I think the longest was 5 weeks without power, which I've done three times). When there's no power at the gas stations they usually can't pump gas, either, so even if you have a generator you may not be able to get fuel for it. If the store isn't restocking because trucks can't get into town (or the corporation owning them thinks it's not worth restocking right now), you won't be able to get new supplies even if you have money. Every time this happened, all I witnessed around me was people coming together and helping each other. We all checked on our elderly neighbors, combined resources, cooked food for each other, helped each other clear the roads and driveways, helped people get back to their families or out of dangerous situations. Everybody on our block siphoned gas out of their cars to run a generator keeping perishable foods and one person with life support equipment safe. There's a video out there of one of my sister's neighbor using an air mattress as a life raft to move a litter of puppies out of a flooded area. People are usually better than we think they are.

Fun fact. Jasper is a microcrystalline quartz or sometimes called cryptocrystalline is compact varieties made of tiny crystal grains that are visible in an optical microscope. The microcrystalline quartz varieties are carnelian, chalcedony, onyx, agate, chert, and flint.

There is something so viscerally powerful about the expressions in these episodes. The panic, the shock, the grief. It's all so raw and gut wrenching. I'm amazed every time I see it. The animators who did this are truly talented.

There is SO MUCH in this episode that hints at lore that doesn't drop for seasons. The idea that we thought one gem using a single power could stop a blast FROM A SPACE SHIP without something else going on completely breaks me when I stop to think about it, especially when that gem is so weak compared to what they were apparently capable of at full power. That just . . . what's really going on should have been so obvious here.

'Return' can reference either lapis, jasper or generally the gem empire, but this is actually peridot's first time on the planet. Prior to then, it had been her drones she deployed, as well as her remotely accessing the underground kindergarten lab

Beach city is a small town. Also, Lapis WAS at the temple. But the return is most likely referring to the return of the crystal gems’ ancient enemy- the homeworld gems.
