@@steveunderwood9307 Well there is race “coding” in that some characters can be clearly modeled on a certain race. Like Garnet is drawn to look like a black human and has an AAVE accent, while Pearl is clearly drawn to look like a white human. Though they aren’t actually so, they take the forms of such. It’s much like how they’re “female” and “lesbians” despite being genderless in reality. Though that doesn’t stop it from most contexts it’s brought up in to be groanworthy, and in most cases “coding” is indeed pretty BS. Like that fiasco with Knuckles the Echidna being “black coded” apparently (despite the fact that if anything his culture is pretty clearly Mayan/Aztec/Incan influenced and that he is an Australian animal, maybe with some Jamaican influence to his design, so even if he was “coded” as a certain race one could make as much of an argument that he’s “coded” to be Amerindian or Aboriginal). I’ve also seen Ahsoka from Star Wars being described as “non-white coded”. It’s absolutely stupid. I’m surprised more people aren’t taking the piss out of it.

As far as I know lots of stuff is from that world (I don’t want spoilers or risk inadvertently metagaming, so haven’t read them), but huge parts are all him. Our character’s original backstories are big parts of the world and how we act and fuck up are massively influential on the make-up of everything around us, changing the setting he based it upon. Again - you’re not wrong, I just think it’s more nuanced than “basing a campaign in an existing universe is plagiarism”. A while back I replied to someone's post when that person, who I believe was either a child or young teen I can't remember exactly, expressed some annoyance that some adults could act so bigoted when it came to gender/sexual identities when even a child could understand the issues and know that acting bigoted is wrong. All the players found it really interesting and just started having fun, one of them got really invedted with the plot about the godess, another just had a walk to see all the city had to offer and another just sat there talking to a local vampire lord who, after retiring to this place, had become a successful novel writer. One of the players though, had a character that was very anti-undead, which is understandable, and could lead to some fun roleplay. Instead he had a bit of a tantrum and left for the outskirts of the town, to "look for some money". It had been established that the outskirts are filled with those among the city's undead that either have little to no sentience or have the most aggressive instincts. So he goes there, he's picking up seashells or something and out comes a random skeleton. The skeleton starts making noises at him and keeps approaching him (in pathfinder undead have their own language, this character didn't speak it). "Does it come near me?" "Yes, it starts approaching you" "cure wounds" (in pf cure spells hurt undead). "The skeleton takes 16 damage and crumbles into dust....... A huge bulking skeletal monster (I flip the bestiary and show them the Gashadokuro) appears, bursting out of the rotting ground, it's usually hard to tell the mood of undead creatures, but this one is definitely angry at you" "I cast fly and fly away" "He gets an attack of opportunity and grabs you by the leg" "oh...". 5 rounds of the character tryng to escape as he dies. Then the gashadokuro brings the corpse in front of the avatar of the godess. So what's happened here? See, the skeleton just wanted to know the time. It was old, it was a rainy day and it wasn't able to see the sun very well, so yeah, of course if a random stranger passed by it would ask. Then the guy Dr. Manhattans the skeleton, who's just a random citizen. A buddy of his, usually a gentle giant, former encarnation of hunger and strife, watches from its resting place as its poker friend ceases to exist. After the player character is also a broken pile of meat he carries the corpse in front of the godess to see if she can fix him. Because the big skeleton was chaotic good. So the godess brings the player character back from the death... with a little twist to make him humble. He's now undead himself. He rises, pale and with no pulse. He asks if he has spells slots. I tell him he's resurrected as he was when he died, slots and all. He goes "Oh fuck no" and casts HEAL on himself, dealing 150 points of damage to his face, commiting suicide by positive energy. On the one hand we all had a laugh. Then I reminded him that his character was important for the plot and he was the ONLY ONE that knew about the BBEG, what he was planning and how to stop them. The rest had literally no knowledge of the actual plot and now I would have to make... a couple of modest changes... A couple of days later he apologized and asked if he could undo his suicide by health, but I told him it was ok, it was a decission taken on rol by the character, that I liked his new character and that I already had plans for his former one's soul. We had a laugh and a kek and we've kept playing for months, but... getting them back to the plotline has been an uphill battle since then!

“... and as your body sinks deeper into the waters below, broken and bloody, you awaken. You are unsure of where you are, seemingly floating amidst the night sky, with naught but the distant stars to keep you company. You’re unsure of how long you drift amongst these unmoving pinpricks of light before you notice the faint heat and the strange vibration coming from within that strange tattered book you carry. You take the book out to examine it, but this isn’t the book you expected to see. What you hold on your hand is not the ancient, decrepit tome you once possessed. “It looks new, the title written in a script that you are unable to understand. The warmth has grown to the point that the book is very nearly searing your flesh, but you can’t let go. Not yet. The vibration has grown into an all-encompassing hum that penetrates your mind. The book is emitting a soft, green glow. “You open the book and your mind begins to instantly fill with the forbidden knowledge stored inside. You feel yourself succumbing to the influx of information flooding your mind. You struggle in vain to close the book as the distant stars close in on you, the pale, sickly green light emitted by the book casting just enough light for you to see the horrible, indescribable forms of the beings attached to the glowing eyes that had been, you finally realize, following you this entire time. “You feel your body begin to rip itself asunder as your flesh begins to tear and your blood begins to flow out of you into an odd cloud before being absorbed by the book. You feel a white hot pain somewhere deep in your mind and then you are no more. “The rest of you are are looking over the edge of the bridge, staring down at the blood slowly spreading in the waters below, the only sign of your fallen comrade. After a moment, in the cloud of red, a pinprick of a pale, green light begins to shine through the blood. The amount of blood slowly decreases in volume, seemingly siphoned into the ever-growing light. “As the last of the blood is sucked into the light, the water begins to bubble and boil before erupting into a pillar of light that extends into the sky. The smell of ozone and rot permeates the air. As the pillar of light dies down, you see a figure, humanoid with long, visibly broken and distorted features floating in the air above the water, at eye level with you on the bridge. “It’s wearing the garments and the flesh of your fallen comrade, but as it turns its gaze upon you, you know that this THING is not them. Every fiber of your being rejects the presence of this creature and the foul energy radiating from it and the familiar-looking book in its grasp. Its gaze still leveled on you, it opens its mouth as if to speak as a shrill shriek resonates through your minds, painfully forcing you all to your knees. The creature then turns its attention away from the bridge and immediately flies off towards the southeast, faster than your eyes can follow. “After a few minutes, you’re able to regain your footing and the psychic ringing in your mind has mostly faded, although the smell of ozone and rot still remains. You each notice that you all are bleeding from the ears and eyes, although there is no obvious wound and, once wiped away, the bleeding seems to stop. “Due to witnessing the birth of the Dark Foreteller, you each take 1 point of insanity.”

I once got to play a Tomb of Horrors campaign where the DM challenged all of us to comb through every splatbook and come at him with the strongest, most rediculous, most overpowered minmaxed characters we could think of. With the expectation that they will all die horribly either way. My offering for the challenge was "Thresher" a build that focused on the 'severing' rules for tearing people's arms and legs off. Makes up to 4 attack rolls at a +24 to hit at level 10, and then the target needs to make a DC 40 fortitude save or one limb of my choosing is crippled and unusable. I thought this would tear me through every single encounter as some unstoppable nightmare for the poor DM. Wanna know what the very first fight in the entire campaign was? A gargoyal with 8 arms. I smashed apart four of them, and then instantly died to the multiple rending attacks he threw in return. "Tuche dm, well played." Was really into Steven universe for a while, loved the retroactive redemption of rose where she was perfect for them because she had developed and changed and so the series is uncovering the issues she had, like growing up and realizing your parents are human and made mistakes instead of being the perfect examples you wanted to live up to when you were younger, you instead become scared of ending up like them. Until you accept their part of you and you’ll be “like” them, but they doesn’t change the fact that you’re “you”. A powerful message for many children and teenagers even young adults who need help figuring their life out. An amazing story riddled with classism and abusive relationships along with a hero complex main character though brought out some horrible people.
@crystalizedunity5003 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if I wanted to play a Gem from Steven Universe, I would tweak the plot like so: Say I wanted to "play a Pearl". I would have the character's name be Pearl, and be an escaped servant from an extremely tyrannical kingdom. Servants and guards are divided into groups named after gemstones. Pearls are personal attendants, Jaspers are one of the sections of the army, etc. Many things could be cut for simplicity, like fusions. Gem weapons? Nope, actual weapons. The story can just be about overthrowing the Diamonds/Queens and saving the kingdom. As is obvious from this blurb I have never been a DM, but this tiny little blurb makes more sense than playing black Rose Quartz and expecting people to go along and magically know the OP abilities of the Crystal Gems.

But there are European shields such as the Roman one made to be a great full body defense to accompany the lances and spears. So as the character Karen was base off has a round mostly looked like a Norwegian barbaric viking shield, it was not meant to be a weapon, max it could do was knock people out, and it's heavily base on the individual's strength. I don’t know if it needs a spike but a shield can certainly be used as a weapon. I think you can definitely give someone a concussion with them. I bet it’s more hefty than a sword too, so maybe the edge of a shield could go some considerable damage too. There’s even a meme of someone saying “tell me how this grass tastes, little man!” and knocking someone out with a shield. He hit them with the face of a big shield though. You could probably also shove someone or their arms to try and mess up their stance. I don’t know if it would be good for a takedown, but controlling your opponent is advantageous and you’ll see people grappling and wrestling each other to the ground in shows like Knight Fight. They use kicks and strikes too. It’s a fun show to watch.

A desert Sand Viper Naga who’s snake-like strike can thrust a spear like 15 fricken feet. A wolf that carries the sword & scabbard of its fallen Ranger master, who originally intended the wolf’s spirit to be infused with it if it fell in battle, but fate would have the opposite happen. Like if you really wanted a fox character, pick something like a _Kitsune_ or _húli Jīng_ from actual mythology. A dark and superstitious DnD campain set around classic “Yōkai” lore would be a great change of pace from Tolkien-inspired fantasy.

They were originally a ranger's companion, so one of your examples reminded me of this character. They were based on a combination of the Japanese story about the old man that made the cherry blossoms bloom, who had a white dog, and pagan folklore that involved dogs guarding places where fairies live. Seriously. I was trying to play an egyptian monk with lots of bandages like a mummy, and the DM GF decided that my character would be way more interesting if he was a gay monk and wore like pink stockings and stuff. This is a different character btw, but I kept getting pestered and even the DM kept agreeing (Because he gave his girlfriend everything she wants) to the point I made him gay so they would leave me alone. If that was not bad enough they also would make me try and be steriotypically gay and flamboyant, despite my monk being serious and not really romantically or socially inclined. So when I managed to kill of this other character that DERAILED their campaign due to the GF friendly fire crit killing me (With enough force to decapitate me) I just enjoyed it and let it all happen. I was punished by the DM for dying despite it was a friendly fire kill, but at that point Pandoras box had been opened already and I frankly did not care.

BBEG is a very powerful being from the same plane intent on converting the prime material plane to it's crystaline nature. Obviously, you need to let the players make their own characters, or, if you really want, at the very least let them choose from a decent variety of premade characters. It could make for an interesting, fairly unique and fun campaign. Just not likely in the hands of a first time DM, and definitely not if you're trying to make it into some altruistic kids tv show.

That part about killing off your own character really brings me back. While I never performed this sin myself, I have decided to have characters leave the group so I could play other characters and start over. The first time was with my warlock character, Garret Greycastle. The first Warlock I ever played. This was in the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure module. I wont go into the whole story (because a KZbin comment isn't the right place for it) so I will summarize and go into more detail if someone asks. From the beginning of the campaign, my character faced abuse not just from the enemies, but from the party as well. The first thing that happened when he met another member of the party (a barbarian. I hate barbarians) was him getting his head slammed into a table. I had wanted to play a charismatic wise guy that conned people out of their money, but every time I tried to make some jokes during RP (Which the other players where doing as well) I got punished for it. On multiple occasions other players would attack me for having the audacity to try to speak up. And in actual combat the DM would always try to start combat with me in melee range, and as a warlock with hardly any armor class that lead to me being downed nearly every combat encounter. This eventually lead me to take feats to increase my AC like shield master and Medium Armor Master. (The DM straight up asked me why I wasted my feats.) Naturally, all this abuse changed how I roleplayed as Garret. Instead of being a charismatic roguish type, he was instead a standoffish introvert who didn't like anyone in the party. To make a long story short, our party was captured by the earth cult (so the DM could take away our magic items) and we where separated through out the earth cult complex. Garret was the only character not thrown in a cell with the slaves and with the help of a good NPC named Sunnie (his future love interest) managed to rescue most of the other PCs and all of the slaves. Since the other PCs were a DMPC that no one liked and the barbarian that constantly attacked him, Garret decided to only save the PCs he found in the slave pens and leave them behind. The other PCs went along with this because we had a lot of people who needed protection and we couldn't bring them through the enemy base. However, I knew that when the barbarian caught up with the party (He escaped on his own) he would try to kill my character regardless. I knew this because he has nearly killed my character several times and no other PC tried to stop him. So I had Garret take Sunnie away from Redlarch and they started a life together in Neverwinter.

The type of person to be obsessive over that show is the type who always subverts any established cannon to 'fix it'
