Steven Universe Theory - Steven's Subconscious

I actually adore the idea of Steven being able to talk to his mother through this sort of deep meditation. I'm still not convinced that Rose as we know is totally gone. As she said, all of her became half of Steven. I think that means that all that code, dna, whatever you want to call it, is still ALL there, it's just been reorganized to intermingle with Steven's human half. If you think of it like the gem itself, it's not obliterated, but it's shattered and scattered. All the pieces still exist, and maybe that solid piece of her mind is still intact in his subconcious. And while I would be against the writers "cheating death" by finding a way to bring Rose back, I think for Steven to be able to access Rose in his subconcious and maybe even allow her to speak through a projected image (Maybe in her room or through a projected hologram like Pearl made of her in Rose's Scabbard,) I think it would be a nice compromise between straight up bringing her back and giving Steven SOME kind of relationship with his mom, if only a mental one. This might even allow her to speak to the gems once in a while. I presume this would have to be hard for Steven to do, to prevent the gems from simply asking Rose whenever something's going wrong, but Pearl clearly needs some closure that Rose never gave her, and it would be sweet to see Greg and Rose talk again, made a bit bittersweet by the fact that they'd be unable to touch each other.

This is a pretty excellent theory. I will point out that Steven's power works fine on living beings (Connie, Greg, Lapis). Specifically those who he cares about. It is shown NOT to work on the Geode or the Warp pad. It might have to do with personal investment, or animate vs. inanimate rather than a subconscious mental block. Overall a really good theory though. Makes a lot of sense. There's also Catch & Release where Steven's worried about what Peridot was trying to say before she poofed and his gem lights up and unlocks Rose's Room all on its own without his direct input.

This is very interesting theory. makes sense a part of Rose still lingering in Steven helping him along the way. After all she is a part of him and she does say and I quote...best I can..."when your loving your self. That's me loving you. loving being you." Just a hint on that Rose is a part of him. Maybe she isn't alive so to speak but a piece of her still lives inside of Steven himself. So to think she may be his subcouinous or maybe come back almost like a spirit is really neat thing to think about.

This is probably one of my most favorite theories/discussions you've made. I also have an idea for this: It's possible that upon Steven's birth, Rose's body began to disappear, like being poofed. Instead of Rose dying, once Steven was born, she was trapped in her gemstone, like as if she were poofed. She can't regenerate, that would possibly hurt or kill Steven. So because she is still in her gem, that is how she is able to tap into Steven's subconscious

you could also mention that when amethyst and greg were caught fighting, Steven was really upset and the tv went static. I have been thinking this during the WHOLE show! I so totally agree with you, and also because steven is so young, you could say that there's a disconnect between his subconscious and his conscience just because he doesn't understand it yet. He is a child, and he is still learning what he wants to become, as seen with the "subtext" used when he clenches his fist on his shirt saying "humans" and also how he felt a disconnect with connie because he was a half gem in the birthday episode. As I said before, steven is still young, and he's trying to find out just who he is, whether that be a crystal gem, a human, or in the middle. He still has much to learn about others and himself, not even as just a half gem learning his powers, but as a youth trying to figure out who he wants to be.

to go along with the "rose still manifesting herself" thing, as you said the tiny floating whale and dog copter are a manifestation of her mind, lion is a manifestation of her body. what makes me think this is, first of all he's pink. all of the other gems manifest a body naturally around their gem, steven can't do that as he already has a solid body around his gem, so as a.... failsafe?... flood gate, he automatically created lion as a release of that extra energy that wasn't being used. why wouldn't it manifest as rose again? not sure, but steven has some kind of fascination with cats, tiger millionaire, cat fingers. so his body created a construct that reflected that. lion also actually listens to steven when he's serious. there's also the fact that he stores all of roses things inside of him, it's been shown that gems contain a pocket demention, within themselves where they can store stuff, just look at the many times pearl has done it.

I've definitely thought about the whale as a manifestation of Rose's conciousness, but I hadn't thought much about dog copter's appearances in Steven's dreams! you make a lot of good points! Random observation: Dog Copter meows at Steven in Chille Tid. Ronaldo has a blog post talking about Dog Copter 4, where he says: "Dogcopter dies defending the planet but then he comes back to life because he’s actually part cat and cats have 9 lives." I know it's a pretty obvious connection to make what with Steven being part Gem. I wonder if it will ever be revealed that Dog Copter is Cookie Cat's son.

Very very interesting! Who knows! I see this as likely or even entirely canon. In a way it's very akin to a fusion, which Steven has been compared to several times in the guidebook, and we know by the scene where Lapis renounces her identity and whenever a fusion talks to itself, that the fusers do exist within the Fusion's subconscious.

This theory is reminiscent of, avatar the last Airbender, Naruto, and bleach, to an extent. In all of those shows the main character connects to other people who have become a part of said main character through meditation and mastering of one's self. Rebecca had admitted that he work is highly influenced by anime, and it is possible, by avatar as well. If these things are true as we know them to be it is highly likely that Steven will eventually come to control his powers completely only after he had died deep enough into himself that he confronts his mother directly. I also have another theory about a correlation between avatar and Steven but that is a gem in another kino Der toten.

Fascinating theory. I have been thinking the series could end with Steven having a near death experience and him talking to Rose inside his mind and Rose regenerating separating from Steven, taking away his Gem powers. Steven would still be alive thanks to his physical body being half-human.

I do like the idea that some tiny fragment of rose still exists, like bits of her memory or her emotions, that would be in line with her message to Steven "when you feel love from yourself that's me loving being you". I'm a little less keen on rose still being a functional entity dormant inside Steven, it just doesn't seem to go with the huge amount of loss the series has shown for rose, just having Steven having an avatar relationship with her as a mentor seems like it would break up alot of the emotional build we've had.

I imagine it being used as a kind of deus-ex-machina, like if there was some really bad situation and they were stuck, somehow Rose would take control of Steven and help them win the fight. And Steven can shapeshift too so it would be like Rose really being back again, for a little bit at least.... It could work.

Maybe if Rose being in Steven's subconscious is what the writers intended (which I strongly agree with) then once Steven is able to meditate and actually talk to Rose inside his mind in his room, that's when he'll start to figure out how to use his powers willingly. I think Steven's gem powers still belong to Rose, and Steven unlocks them when he feels maternal and protective feelings like Rose does, so in a way when he's connecting to her spirit. So once he's able to finally talk to her through meditation, he'll be able to start learning how to work together with her to be consciously in control of their powers together. And maybe they'd be able to start functioning similar to a fusion, not the same of course, but similar. C:

I really don't like the idea of Rose returning in any form. It's very "fanfic-ish." But I do like the idea that Steven's subconscious has a lot of the knowledge Rose had while she was still alive due to them partly being the same person in a way.

It so moving to have a episode of Steven trying to get in contact with Rose and end up going through her memories but still for some reason Rose can't see or even feel Steven's presence. Steven while is enjoying learning more about Rose, feels sad that he won't be able to talk directly to her. It is only when he came upon a certain memory that he starts feeling her emotions and thoughts through empathy in which Rose is finally able to see Steven but only just for a split second.

Talking to his mother through the use of the room is incredibly ingenious. If that is true, I can see him returning to the room on a daily basis to be with his mother, maybe even living there. It will also be the basis to answer a lot of questions that only she'd know. But like you said, it wouldn't be anytime during this season, a little bit more time to mature, a little bit more experience.

I have to agree about the possibility, I just have one note, Steven's subconscious didn't force the events with cloud Connie, He says that he doesn't want her to do what he wants, that in turn causes her to glitch for a moment before becoming a somewhat independent creation of the room. Because she was a part of the room, she was able to see that Steven wants to tell her the truth, possibly subconsciously, I won't deny that, but because of this, Cloud Connie forces Steven to tell Connie the truth. It's not that big of a thing, but I just felt that clarification was important.

Also, did you notice that in "Cat Fingers" when Amethyst was trying to teach Steven how to shape shift, his first question was if he could shape shift into a big lion. I think this also supports your theory, as Steven himself wanted to turn into a lion, which would explain why his gem projection turned into one.

By definition, though, a person's subconscious is a part of their mind they aren't aware of (despite the fact that it often influences one's conscious thoughts and behavior). If Rose is indeed part of Steven's subconscious, and Steven becomes aware of that, she wouldn't be his subconscious anymore. She'd be part of his conscious mind. It is an interesting theory, though.

Another detail, remember what Rose told Steven in her video? "Steven, we can't both exist. I'm going to become half of you. And I need you to know that every moment you love being yourself, that's me, loving you and loving being you. Because you're going to be something extraordinary. You're going to be a human being." Also remember what we learned in "We Need to Talk" that Rose main flaw is that she is really literal. So that little speech was probably literal too. She IS part of him and she loves him, further proving your Rose = Steven's Subconscious theory. Now, what i'm not sure is exactly how complex this Rose Subconscious is. She could be a completely functional being, with her memories intact and the capacity of interacting with others if given a mean (like Rose´s room), she could be only the personality, capable of interacting but only able to vaguely recall the knowledge that Rose had (like Luna from Sailor Moon maybe?). Or it is just a ghost, an imprint of Rose personality that can give prerecorded messages so to speak but is unable to really interact with anyone else.

I would really hope that Steven could unlock and control his powers on his own, independent of his subconscious or perhaps Rose. In Jungian psychology The subconscious is what one is not directly aware of in their psyche but by a trigger can be something conscious. This trigger can be subliminal(not perceived knowingly) or something related or unrelated that reminds the conscience of something no longer thought of. Steven is learning such as when he summoned the shield against Lapis or when the Crystal Gems attempted to corner Peridot.

[Season Five spoilers ahead] This actually makes sense as to why he's able to access Pink's memories through his dreams, and how he's able to emit Pink's aura when he's asleep/unconscious. As gems are like a computer, Rose was like a previous version of Steven, stored deep inside the system of the gem. Through his unconscious, he's able to access those files in a way. It's _similar_ to how the gems were able to remind themselves of who they are after getting rejuvinated in the movie.

This theory definitely makes sense to me. I am, however, nervous to see how Rose reacts to Steven when he does finally reach that point. During Rose's time on Earth, before meeting Greg, she was so set on protecting it and keeping it from the Home World Gems. At this point, Steven has been successful at befriending two of the three HW Gems introduced thus far. I can see the friendships Steven makes shaping his outlook on HW Gems as a whole, especially since he has nothing else to base them off of other than what Pearl and Garnet tell him. I'm wondering if his changing outlook will bring him more towards the idea of overthrowing the Diamonds and freeing all the other HW Gems instead of keeping all non-Crystal Gems away from Earth forever. If this is the case, how will Rose react to that idea? Steven will basically be doing away with her original plan and essentially be inviting more HW Gems to Earth. I could be completely off the mark here, but I thought this was really interesting!

To answer that, I think the Guidebook to the Crystal Gems explains that Rose has faith that Steven will establish a connection between gemkind and humanity in his own way. So, in that case, Rose would probably be the proudest mother in the universe if/when he pulls that off somehow.

In my own opinion, I don't think Steve will ever be able to remember Rose's memories. On the premise that the Gems are like quantum computers, it would be like installing a new operating system, yes, the files might still be on the hard drive, but because of the difference in how the different OS's store, read, and analyze data, you wouldn't be able to access those files unless you had some kind of Data converter, that could take the data written in the language of the old OS and convert it into something the new OS could read. "But Rose is half of Steven, his mind should be similar to hers!" Wrong, Steven is a human that has a gem, not a Gem that is like a human. It's been shown on many occasions, when the CG's don't understand human traditions or idiosyncrasies, that how Gems minds work, and how Humans minds work are completely separate, and that Steven, in that area is 100% human. So transferring data from the mind of a gem to the mind of a human would be like trying to run a Skyrim on one of those fridges with a tablet in the door. Sure, it can be done, but not directly, and it would definitely take some doing. Of course, somethings are similar, so a little bit might get through, but they'd be the less complex thoughts, like "Go here," "Follow Me" or "Believe in Yourself" So I think that the second possibility is the most likely.

interesting, i knew from when u said dog copter was trying to tell him about holding his breath that rose was his subconcious. However i think that rose can actually be revived. If his gemstone is removed, it would make sense that rose would come back, this however will remove steven's powers and change him on a psychological level as a chunk of his subconcious is now gone and retrieved into rose quartz's memories and feelings. This would mean he would forget a few things such as loving himself, dog copter, the familiar books and other things such as how to use his powers and the whale. This would be fun to tackle and also i think they will do this at the season finale of season 4 or season 5 if any.

So then Rose can be with steven in some way. BUT she can't fully because she is half of steven so her only way of contact with steven is though the room and though his dreams

I feel like dogcopter is rose. she could have taken that form after steven saw the preview.She likes animals, and she probally wants to help steven, so it makes sence to me.

That's a cool theory. Especially when you remember the dream sequence Steven had with dogcopter about art in that one episode (I forget which). It's pretty cool to think that that was actually Rose speaking to Steven using dogcopter as a medium. Heh. She knows a lot about art XD.

Rose still exists because Steven is a fusion of her and Greg, but since Greg isn't a gem the change happened entirely to Rose. She remains in Steven's subconscious just like Ruby and Sapphire exist in Garnet's subconscious, constantly aware but only subtly present as Steven's communion with his Gem and it's powers.

maybe this is how they will tie in busmith from lion's mane to the series, by using Rose's memory. This would also be interesting to see what steven does with this new information he would gather about his mother. With all of Roses's dark secrets who knows what could happen. :P

Ok so I wanted to ask you about this. You know the theory that our pearl used to belong to white diamond. I just noticed that in the answer when rose and pearl attacked blue diamonds court, pearls hair is completely white and her outfit is different. Then at the end of the answer when they stumble upon Cotten candy garnet pearls hair is orange (like it is now) and her outfit is different from the beginning of the episode. I don't know if anyone else noticed this but I haven't seen any theories about this. It also helps show the amount of time Rudy and Sapphire were on earth.

+Sophie Ginger Her outfit isn't structurally different. It is just washed of all of its color to match with Pearl's overall white color. Every Gem in the first half of that episode, except for Blue Diamond and Blue Pearl, who are their true colors, are like that, only having one predominant color. They go back to having their regular color schemes once they are on the surface of the Earth. It is to show the difference in attitude going from the rigid, structured court of a Diamond to the freedom found on Earth.

Interesting thought and while I like the idea that Rose is somewhat of a manifestation of Steven's sub-conscious, I honestly don't think this is a way in which Steven can meet her or a gateway to Rose returning. Just from various simple facts (as you mentioned in one of your update videos - the simplest solution is usually the best) - 1. you mention yourself that Dogcopter had told Steven to be himself and love himself. We actually get that more heavily in seasons 2-4, when Steven ends up confronting Rose's enemies who believe him to be Rose to the point where Steven begins questioning himself deeper on whether he can live up to her legacy. I honestly don't think this is what Rose wanted or even expected - she wanted Steven to be human, even with his gem powers. 2. a portion of Chile Tid that always had me wondering is Steven's statement that he 'has a lot of issues to work through'. I have always taken that as him trying to work out his place in human society, hence why his first dream is the familiar standard sitcom setting, with all the gems as human figures and him going to a dance with Connie. This is a pretty standard trope in most family sitcoms and Steven, as the big TV nerd he is, would of course take that as a 'this is what normal human beings do'. This is of course interrupted by seeing Lapis, which throws him back into his hybrid setting. Even Steven's sub-conscious can't override what he truly is, even as much as he wants it. 3. IMHO, Rose is gone in a physical sense and will never come back. From this, I think I could get behind the idea that she is Steven's sub-conscious, guiding or helping rather than taking over and letting him come to his own decisions. This would back up the crew's comments that she's not truly dead - she's not, she's Steven's sub-conscious. However, I really hope she doesn't come back in any form other than flashback or mental projection because that would completely derail not only Steven's character development, but Pearl's, Amethyst's, and even Greg's.
