So erudite and articulate. Props to Steve, and yay for the resurgence of vinyl!

Smart guy....for the most part. He doesn't realize though that many of us are actually not into the 'SPECIAL" release issues and are just interested in the CD version of new releases...done well. It's about my personal ability, within reason, to actually afford new music and to hear it with as much quality as possible true to the original intent of the artist. All the music on my IPOD came from CDs I bought or rarely... borrowed. I'd rather own something physical than hard drive bits...

What the record companies do not understand is that the popularity of an album increases very strong by downloading it for free. which gives a good effect to anything that has to do with sales.

I would pay Anything for Steven Wilson's music, I have never care about the price, ever!

I really love Steven and his music. I agree with him up to a point: I love the "ritual" of buying new records without knowing what to expect. It is (was) a really special moment. I´d been looking for this type of feeling through the years... But reality is what it is: Music is so expensive and it is so difficult to pay harder money in every single artist you follow. So people who can download music will keep on doing because people want to hear music.

@Buddhahop I agree. It has become a real pleasure (and luxury) to listen to an intelligent, articulate person nowadays.

I really admire Steven Wilson. His latest albums: Hand, Cannot, Erase and The Raven...are in my top 10 of favorite albums of all time. But I do not agree on his view on owning 'fysical' music and I used to own like 800 cd's and before that Vinyl. The real beauty and emotion of music is untouchable (unless you play it yourself on an instrument). It is 2017 now and it is possible to enjoy and BUY it in CD quality (or better high-res audio) without ever buying / owning the physical album.

i can't believe that someone with so much talent and Intelligence like Steve could be very materialistic he's like bagging people to buy his albums now a real artist should be happy just that he had his message through to people by his music and that his affecting people lifes in the way he wanted to be

"I can't see any point in that anymore" I love everything Steven does, and he is a massive influence in my life, but there is a point. I cannot afford to pay 150 bucks for his album, yet I still want a physical product.

I wholly agree with you. I would LOVE to buy every single album that Mikael and Steven have ever made on Vinyl, but I am WAY too poor for that. As for MP3s on the web, I'd rather just buy the disc and rip it in WAV format so I can listen to and preserve each song in the highest quality I can afford. MP3s just aren't enough for the kind of beautiful, deep, intricate, subtle music that they make.

I still haven't heard Grace because I can't afford to buy it. I will within the next week though!! :D

@MissAndDie96 But then there's still the ordinary edition on cd and vinyl, and the cd version will probably be accompanied by the bluray with the music in 5.1 just like Insurgentes was with a DVDA :) Not that I'm totally sure about it.

I have the Opeth Vinyl's...I spent a bit on them. I'm fine with paying for music I really enjoy. I just don't want to buy a CD or download a shitty mp3. I'm fine with vinyl for the bands I love the most but I will also be fine with buying lossless files for albums.

i am a mechanical engineer. i am 24 years old and i am working 8-9 hours a day, 6 days a week and i am barely earning 1000 euros a month. i pay the rent, i am mainting the car and the house with all their expenses. So, i am going to give 60 euros just for the 'special edition' album just because the 15 euros cd is not art??? Give me a break... the whole music collector, art lover situation is getting tiring to me.... i prefer living more and that doesn't make me unsofisticated in any way...

@MissAndDie96 There's not a single album by Steven Wilson or any of his projects worth $150. I believe Steven Wilson insists on why his fans need to buy expensive albums of him is because he really needs the money to expand. Money has always been his major issue and he's trying really hard to get it.

"Less and less space is given over to standard CDs". ....you should come to a record store in Australia, Steven....it'd make you very depressed. Very very few vinyls anywhere and no special packaging of anything. You want that stuff in this country, you gotta import it in from overseas yourself. I used to laugh at the blank stares I'd get from people who work at Australian record stores when I'd ask for something I thought was fairly well known. Music in Australia, beyond pop and dance, is dead.

I think Steven's view makes sense with regard to his music or music like it. However, it seems that most music released by record companies is not what many would consider "art" in the way Steven is suggesting. In fact, many are writing with the concept of singles rather than a cohesive album. I think bands who want to pursue "art" without financial backing just need to do it for its own sake. Give it away.

50 quids, not a big deal , Steve ? Ok, may you be right. But beyond the Great Britain in countries Poland 50quids is still a f-big deal. If it was like 50pln (5times less) here in Poland, yeah, that's the prize I'm about to swallow. The main problem is , as you mentioned, the record companies, they're taking the most of it, and the prizes are not fair for each country. I hope it will change as you said with direct sale.

Of course you don't care, Steven. You have your pockets full of money. You have to see the full picture... I think 80% of the world is unable to pay 150 bucks for an album. That's reality, and music industry should make ways to not elitlize music. Music is for all.
