The return of interest to vinyl hasn't quite surprised me as much as how much its stayed. Its proven its not a fad or a quick novelty. There's almost a steady demand for it now and all the record and books stores I go into (even though they're dwindling in number) have vinyl up front. And of course its cool. But I gotta say as somebody who grew up discovering music in the 90s, the nostalgia for me exists more in CDs. I used to have hundreds until I got rid of them recently (which I'm still somewhat regretful about). I remember as a teen looking at the art, photos and liner notes while getting lost in worlds through the headphones. Even when mp3s started to hit in the 2000s I'd still end up burning them to CDs and making my own mixes (and yes I still bought the albums). These days that magic is somewhat gone. Music is an aural consumable now with streaming and KZbin. On top of that you've got a stagnating, cheap thrill music "scene" that doesn't do a whole lot to stand out. In fact I can't even really describe the hallmarks of the 2010s in terms of music. Maybe I'm just jaded and getting old.

I feel SW's understanding of his own career is spot on and his lack of ego is extremely refreshing. I agree that a bit of radio airplay would do his career a huge service. I'll never understand how music like Sigur Ros and Radiohead could be played on the radio alongside Coldplay or Mumford and Sons, yet Porcupine Tree and Steven WIlson never even get a mention. I sometimes this peoples misconceptions of 'prog' play a huge role in this.

***** Great story! I've never heard any Porcupine Tree songs on the radio, and only a couple of SW's songs recently. Discovering Steven's music was a revelation for me; the kind of music I've been searching for all my life!

It's partly because PT and SW have been pigeonholed(sometimes somewhat erroneously)as progressive rock(prog). However, his music is as vast as Rush and other great bands in that you can't really pigeonhole it. He(and PT)actually do have a pretty big following and has tons of fans(probably about the same amount as Dream Theater or close to it).

I think it's the point now that it comes to whoever proposes to do that kind of collaboration. Last 10 years or so it would seem that Wilson had to kinda ask Reznor, but now I think they could both agree to do something like that for just pure sake of art. I think they are both great artists and that would be just awesome to see what they could come up with. The only sad thing, though, is that it should have happened like 20 (or more) years ago, when they still had, like, you know, it in them. Now it could probably feel fake, just like Tapeworm with Maynard of Tool, if you know what I mean.

I do like buying vinyl and special edition CD / DVD-A / BluRay releases of my favourite music but most of the music I listen to now is streamed. I think it's incredible to have access to nearly every piece of music ever recorded, almost wherever I am, through a device that fits in my pocket.

I live in Mexico and never heard Steven Wilson on the radio, I found his music by searching on the internet. Actually there is almost no prog music in mexican radio, prog fans here are people who knows some older people related to prog festivals that were made more often in the past... so you will start listening to prog by recommendation of someone, or because you play some instrument and understand that prog music can lead you to more complex stuff that is funnier to play...

My only issue with modern vinyl releases is that a lot of times the artists forego any attention to the physical vinyl art experience, and don't really provide that "magic of sitting down and listening to the record straight through". I only own about 3 dozen records from modern artists, but usually the inside covers have little to no artwork, and some don't even have the lyrics posted. Wilson is really the only artist I own who maintains that 60s/70s style of extending his music into the artwork displayed on/inside the vinyl case. Of course, I usually end up painting a picture of the artist's work in my own mind, but it's nice to see how the artist imagines their own music on paper (or canvas I guess) and to have another medium through which I can absorb the art. And a lot of times I see that art booklets cost extra and are not part of the CD/vinyl itself. Perhaps I am listening to every artist that's doing it wrong though lol.

I find it strange how few people seem to hold music in the physical realm and the digital in more equal regard. It seems to be one or the other in so many people's eyes, and fans of the physical use the digital as a practicality but without enjoying the fact. I feel as Steven and many others do about physical music, and with artists for whom I hold real artistic appreciation I always endeavour to get that experience and their "full artistic vision", but I also love the way digital music can be shared and discovered and propagated with such ease. I can have hundreds of songs on my phone and shuffle them to get a stream of my own musical consciouness as a random concoction while I'm on the way to work. All of this has to me the exact same amount of magic, just a different one.

+Manny Cowdrey-Cuberos I get where some people found "excitement" over getting a CD, and I did to (I bought an Eminem CD as a kid and I remember how hyped I was to get home), but, personally, when I buy an album/song on iTunes, I still find myself listening to it on repeat for days after buying it, even if I've been listening to the album/song over YT constantly (say what you will about YT, it has saved me a shitton of money while also giving me a hint of what I would be buying. Those 30 second blurbs on iTunes don't do favors for a lot of songs I like, especially seeing that most songs I own are over 5 minutes). The only difference between the two is just the instant gratification downloading can get you.

Vlad Kazimirov absolutely! This is the Gasteig in Munich, Germany. The home of the Munich Philharmonic. Not a typical venue for a rock concert.

+Andy Robison Yes, the B-roll used over the interview was very cool. I'm going to guess they used a Glidecam and a Panasonic GH4 to capture footage at a higher frame rate to produce slo-mo. It was damn good.

I discovered Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Mandy Kane, Insommium, Static X and some Rammstein albums just trawling through odd cd stores without even knowing much about those bands. I would buy more modern vinyl if it wasn't so expensive lol. Still love an old record hunt in second hand stores. Most of it is crap but can sometimes find a gem. Love seeing great artwork in album booklets and engaging in the ritual of playing a record, relaxing on the couch with my favourite drink.. listening to classics just zoning out. All played on a decent sound system. No better experience really. Well unless you add a sexual partner.

Thorandir Andaer totally.i discovered a bunch of bands that way. Especially wandering around Vintage Vinyl in New Jersey, Manifest in Columbia, SC and Generation Records in NYC. Half my catalogue of CDs and vinyls come from those stores.

Awesome. Such wonderful nostalgia from albums I randomly discovered. Late nights with headphones on, listening to entire records, reading lyrics and looking at the artwork. The inpatient sugar hit music youths are missing out.

Hopeful words from one of the Masters of "progressive" music, however you wanna use that word. And remember: books and newspapers did NOT die with the internet, as was predicted, nor are CDs, DVDs etc going to be replaced by streaming (which suck for a number of reasons, not least of which is that you are at the total mercy of the supplier) as there is that tactile, almost sensual, experience of touching a CD, DVD or whatever..or feel the smell of paper, which no amount of digital tinkering can reproduce.

You just have to ask yourself, would you rather have less music and have physical copies of it all or have way more music and stream it. I’d rather have the latter. I care more about the music itself than the physical copy of it.
