Not wild about seeing a dog in the pen. The horse doesn't like it either.

Best thing is to teach a horse early to not fear dogs. People get hurt by horses that panic because of aggressive, undisciplined dogs. I'd much rather have horses that chase dogs than the other way around.

Wonder who the dog annoyed more, me or the horse!

He probably annoys me more than anyone, but when my horses leave here they are not afraid of dogs. My clients appreciate it.

Nice to see a trainer take time in gentling a horse. This was great 👍🏼

I think having the dog in the pen is not helpful. Maybe about after working with him for a while. Since you are both predators.

Sorry kinda late finding your video's like what your doing and understand that everyone does things differently and has there own style and comfort levels, my only question is allowing the dog in the pen at this early stage seems a unnecessary distraction for a horse that's already stressed. I guess its the dog chasing the horse, instead of its focus being on the trainer it has not only the questions your asking him to figure out but also being chased by a predatory animal. Just my thoughts would enjoy hearing you thoughts on this as I am always open to new things.

You are right. I realized and kept the dog out in later sessions.

It’s interesting to watch the inter-play between the dog and the horse. They’re both watching you and watching each other. I would find that I would have to work with the dog outside the fence, but I have worked with Cats helping me. When we started Colts the cats were always there to make sure we didn’t hurt the babies. The dog looks like he’s protecting the Horse part of the time. Fun.

Question. Do you leave the halter and lead line on him all the time during these first few days of training?
@SteveDyer7 ай бұрын
I leave it on until he is gentle enough to take it off.

I have a little over a year old colt off the yakima reservation who's completely wild. I unfortunately do not have a round pen and I am trying not to rope him to halter break him. Any tips? His stall I have him in is big enough I been doing little round pen work luckily he is small And I have got him to come up to me to eat out of grain bucket and touch his face sometimes. But Any tips would be great as iv never gentle a wild horse
@SteveDyer2 жыл бұрын
Keep doing what you are doing. He should get more gentle every day. You can take a long stick or piece of PVC pipe to touch him and get him used to things touching his body. Eventually rub him with the lead rope until you can place it over his neck. No need to get in a hurry but make sure he gets better each day.

Amazing work you do just wanted to ask a question My Daughter is currently trying to train her Mustang how do you get the halter on the Horse? We totally need some help? Thank you
@SteveDyer2 жыл бұрын
There are 3 ways to get a halter on him. 1) have the BLM do it for you when you pick him up. That’s what I did. 2) Rope him and then put it on. If you do this, he needs to be gentle enough to get the halter on the rope off in the same session. 3) Keep gentling him and touching him in a small space until you can halter him like a normal horse.

He probably needs a reason to stand still. Try round penning or lunging him for 15 to 20 minutes until he is tired.

Is it ok to start gentling my mustang with the dog in the pen? Does the dog actually help with this? He is my only horse.
@SteveDyer2 жыл бұрын
At some point your horse needs to become accustomed to dogs. I actually banned that dog from the round pen after a few days but allow him in the arena when the horses are a little more advanced.
