My school literally gave us 1 hour and 45 minutes for lunch. Everyone would just sit and talk for an hour. But there was this one table that made their own lunch and even prepared the entire table by cleaning it. It was insane.

I had a friend in college who was 3/4 Chinese and 1/4 Vietnamese, and her grandmother made her lunch every day. Her 3 layer bento box smelled amazing! 🤤 I loved sitting next to her with my cold store bought sushi, bc the smell alone made my food taste better. 😂

@@sukuna7583 It was slightly different each time. But, the general formula was typically fried rice with a grilled meat, vegetables either diced into the rice or grilled vegetables as a side (or both), always a fried egg to go on top of the rice, and either soup broth or tea to drink with it in a thermos. Cold days usually had soup. 🤤

When I was in middle school, I had a vietnamese friend (we hung out because I was vietnamese lmao) and during lunch they would bring an entire meal. I mean it could literally serve a whole family; fish, rice, chicken, grilled vegetables, soy sauce, fish sauce, you name it. They could bring it. On April Fools, they took it a step further and brought an entire mini-grill to lunch and fried the whole table some sliced ribs. A day I will never forget.

Hate to say it, adults are no better than children. I cannot speak for other countries, but I know it exists in America, especially rural, demographically homogeneous areas. Folks who did not grow up with Asian cuisine and flavors will very likely criticize it as disgusting, especially if they are culturally ignorant. Of course, such people are so prone to impulsive judgments that they refuse to see the benefits in learning more about another people group's culture and distinctions.

at school people are always so jealous of my packed lunch because while they sit there with a plain cheese sandwich i get a delicious plate of hot noodles, or a bento box, or a chicken leg im so glad i wasn't born like 20 years earlier when i would have been made fun of for my food

As a kid, my school lunch consisted of Filipino food, iced water in my pink thermos with a screw-on cup a fruit cup, and breadsticks (if I had spaghetti). Because I was the only one in my class who was in an Asian household, I didn't understand the excitement and curiosity my elementary teachers and classmates had because my lunches were my normal. When I was in middle school, I had Asian classmates who brought similar containers and amazing food. As we started making requests (we never shared food on the spot), I finally got why the sandwich-wielding or lunch-ordering students stared at us 😂

This was so like an Asian family I went to school with in the 70s, all us kids had sangas (sandwiches) & maybe a couple of snacks & a drink. This family would all (4 of them) gather for lunch & recess & have a full bloody picnic spread. We were all soo jealous, it became a roster system to stop fights on who could trade with them
