Today we take a look at Tim Burton's 3rd and so far, final stop motion feature; Corpse Bride. Where as his previous stop motion film (Nightmare Before Christmas), combined Horror with Christmas, Corpse bride blends Horror with Romance. A combination in holy matrimony? Let's take a look....

If I was murdered and became a restless spirit I would be tuck in a sort of limbo until I see my business concluded. And if I deem it so then that could be when I get revenge or just when I bored. At least that’s kind of how I always saw this movie and other similar representations of limbo and limbo states in film and stuff.

Okay, about the ending: The whole time that Emily was dead she wished for nothing more than to be a bride and finally get married, when Victor came along this wish was about to come true. At the end she realised that even if Victor wanted to marry her out of free will it was only because he thought he lost Victoria and when she saw Victoria she understood that by forcing her wish to come true she would take another womans wish away. In that moment she could finally let go and let her soul rest in peace, that's the butterfly part.

The reason Emily decided to stop the wedding, is literally said in dialogue. She doesn’t want the same thing to happen to Victoria that happened to her, and I think she’s right to do that. When she faded into butterflies it’s a symbol that she is at peace, and free. She found this closure through allowing Victoria to have in life what Emily couldn’t

Fun fact: The animation for Corpse Bride was done so buttery smooth and perfect, people kept thinking Burton made it using CG and not stop motion! He did not like this, as he's pretty proud of his stop motion style, so when Frankenweenie was made, he cut back just a bit on the smoothness of his animation to show it really was stop motion.

Fun Fact: In the very beginning, when Victor is sketching a butterfly, this scene is supposed to foreshadow what's going to happen to Emilie in the end. Just like the butterfly is trapped under the glass dome in the beginning, Emilie is also trapped, but in "wedding limbo". And just like Victor sets the butterfly free from its prison in the beginning, he will also set Emilie free from her vows with Lord Barkis in the end. Which is why she turns into butterflies specifically, so it'll show the parallels between the beginning and ending

Some notes: The beginning song was SUPPOSED to be underwhelming. It wasnt the main focus of the story yet, and it adds to the dreariness of the town. - Emily never married Barkus, they were engaged. She stole her own wealth so they could take off and elope, but Barkus killed her and took her money. That's why she was waiting to be married. - the butterfly ending was symbolic. Referring to the beginning, Barkus was swatting away a butterfly - the only color in the land of the living. She turned into butterflies as symbolism of being free from him and making peace with her death. Shes no longer a woman in white (so to speak)

I actually like how Emily and Victoria subverts the Betty and Veronica archetype in love triangles. Instead of having Victor all to herself, Emily lets him go so that Victoria can be happy with him. It’s healing from her traumatic past that is her happy ending. I think it’s a genuinely good message to teach to children about not always having the one at the end. What matters is finding their happiness with or without a love interest and both choices are valid. Edit: Jesus Christ, why can’t some people behave? -_-

Plus, in all fairness to the film, I feel like it would be a, uh, questionable message to give to kids of "yes, children, you should kill yourself for your loved ones if they ask". My issue with Emily giving him up is that we don't see him with Victoria. It's one of the weakest plot points of the movie. The wine scene at the end doesn't feel forced; Lord Barkis was patronizing Emily by having a toast over the fact she "is always the bride's maid, never the bride" and since the wine was meant for the vows, it adds another layer of douchery for him.

Just for the person a few years later on being found dead. And the police then realise that they where only a few meters off. Like it was an "if i only had looked to the left at that moment" or "Blink and you miss it" Sometimes it just happen even through your best efforts.

Emily did not marry which is why she was so excited when Victor "proposed". Her killer's plan was to elope with her since her parents did not agree with their relationship. When she brought all the money of her family (which he told her to bring), he killed her at the meeting place which was the large tree Victor found her under. She was wearing a wedding dress because she assumed they'd marry after they ran away together. Spoiler at the End That's why he says "always the bridesmaid, never the bride".

@@TheTaylorwailer OK so apparently the version I told you was a Christianized version from the 19th century. The original Jewish version from the 18th century involves the ghost of a woman who was killed during the pogroms on her wedding night. Two Jewish boys are camping in the forest the night before the older boy’s wedding. They get drunk, and find a funny root in the shape of a woman’s finger, so they preform the wedding vows, and dance the wedding dance. The corpse bride is a skeleton in a dress, not a half mummified Beauty like Emily. Horny ghost shenanigans ensue, until the two boys seek the help of the rabbi. The rabbi and all the other Jewish schoolers in town gather, and decide the dead have no entitlement to the living, which makes the corps bride really sad. But the living bride consoles her, by promising to have enough children for the both of them, so the corpse bride returned to the land of the dead, and the young couple lived happily ever after.

There is a reason, Victor puts the ring in Emily's index finger. The film is based on a Jewish fairytale, and Jews put the ring on the index finger under the chuppah (wedding canopy). At the end on the fairytale, the living couple promise to name their eldest daughter after the Corpse Bride. Which helps her find peace, because her memory will live on. PS: Helena Bonham Carter voiced Emily the Corpse Bride. While, Victoria was voiced by Emily Watson.

At first Victor plays higher “happy” notes like he’s trying to catch Emily’s attention and asks her to forgive him, and Emily plays lower, sad notes that show how she’s feeling. The way I see it, Victor & Victoria were literally made for each other. (Obvious because of their names.) The movie isn't supposed to be about Victor & Victoria learning something about each other; It's supposed to be about Emily learning to let go of her past, so she can move on & find peace. Granted, I can understand why for many people it's not as satisfying to see this ending, I feel like it's best choice. Because it shows not every happy ending needs end with all good/likable characters getting married.
@StraightestDakregor

I also want to say, a lot of the critique on Victoria's character was how underdeveloped she was, but like, they did the best they could. There were little chances to see her interact with Victor, and they took those chances. If Victor is in the land of the dead for most of the story of course he won't be able to interact and develop with Victoria. What little could be done about Victoria and her relationship with Victor, was done. In the introduction, in the reveal of what had happened to him and what she tried to do to help him we see her doing all she could as someone held back by her parents and lack of any ways to help Victor. She needed more development but I think it would've felt forced or awkward for her to develop feelings for someone that isn't there.

I saw she is a Caring, loving, determined, brave, smart, survivalist. Showing through the scenes we see her in that she knows when to keep going when there is hope. And knowing when to give up knowing she wouldn't making it on the streets as a young beggar woman. So she does the smart thing and marries the other guy. Knowing at least that she will be fed and housed. I agree she doesn't have a complete personality but she does have a bit more of a personality than your description. Also thank you for pointing that out. I hate it when people overlook Vicki because she isn't one of the main characters.

Both choices are genuinely okay! But as I think about it, I'm happy that Emily gave Victor to Victoria. Victoria could have ended up like Emily if she were to stay with Lord Barkus. I personally think victor not marrying Emily even though they had chemistry is the better choice, it shows you can have a strong emotional bond with someone of the same gender but not necessarily be in love with them. Like that's something that not a lot of movies portray especially a few years ago when this came out, usually if you had a man and woman that formed a bond it was romantic and they ended up as a couple, but in real life that isn't always the case. Like I never had feelings like that towards my male friends as a kid but had really good friendships with them, and I liked that they had the ending be that they were just friends and that victor helped her find peace rather than romantic love.

I think that precisely because we have so much screen time with Emily, her choice of letting Victor go is that much more impactful and telling of their bond and respect for each other. I feel like Emily's kind of the subject of the story, even if Victor's the protagonist, because she's the one who changed the most throught, so it makes a kind of sense for Victor and Victoria to not be that deeply developed, but it could all have been better executed, i agree.

Emily is actually voiced by Helena, while Victoria is voiced by Emily Watson. Also, everyone really loves Emily and wanted Victor to end up with her, but I always preferred Victoria. I just think she’s so sweet and adorable. Maybe it’s my love for secondary characters, but I really love Victoria. When she to went to try and get help for Victor I felt like it was her fighting for her love. I don’t think he ever loved Emily anyways, I mean he basically heard that Victoria was already getting married to someone else, so he gave up and tried to make Emily happy instead of himself. Victoria had a way of letting others show her their personality, before she made a judgement. I think her relationship with Victor is more of a silent understanding of each other, while with Emily she states things out loud and it’s almost one sided half the time.

I honestly dont like Emily. I dont hate her, but I found nothing to like about her either. First when Victor was practicing his marriage vows for VICTORIA in a cemetery/woods (?), terrible place to do so but still, she assumed he married her. Then without explaining what just happened, she kisses an absolutely baffled Victor without his consent (sexual assault in other words). I get it she has a tragic story and all, but that does not give her the right to find a groom in whoever she wants, which firstly, was not even the intention with which Victor had spoken his vows in front of the tree. It was a misunderstanding that got escalated. And when Victor, absolutely rightfully so, tried to escape the clutches of a CORPSE, HE GETS BLAMED FOR THAT? Imagine if the genders were reversed? If a (dead) man had kissed a woman, what would have been the reaction to that? Then when it is made clear that Victor has his heart on Victoria, Emily is upset that he does not like her and her friends try to cheer her up by singing to her in praise. How on earth is that Victoria's fault in any way that all that happened? I am truly glad the Emily realised that in the end and did not let Victor die. It would have led to many misfortunes for Victoria, who was married to the Lord I forgot his name, i dont want to imagine what he would have done to her. She kinda saved two lives by not marrying Victor.
@opheliebell22
@opheliebell22 Жыл бұрын
@@Cat_tiee You put too much actual problems in a romantic movie made in 2005. Stop the whole "if genders were reverse" blahblah things, there are a lot of movies made at the time that have sexism and all, including Disney, but you have to put more context to it and also don't forget that this is just a fiction, not real life. Nobody had and won't see that movie thinking they should act the same way as Emily the first time she met Victor. You missed all the points of the movies, starting by the fact that she thought he was proposing to her, so, to her the kiss is legit. Second Victor didn't get blamed for clutching a "corpse" but her actual wife. You're in the land of the dead buddy, everybody there don't define themselves by " simples corpses", they were personns, respect. Thirdly, put yourself in the place of Emily, if you only can considering your speech...she truly believed Victor in every words. He never told her face to face until the Tears to shed song that it was a mistake. He set her up to meet his parents while in fact he was "cheating on her" in Emily point of view. The revelation was a shock to her, especially when she thought she found her true love. And if Lord Barkis stayed with Victoria, she would have simply dies xp So yes, Emily can acts selfish but Steve is right, she has more personnality and common things with Victor, as much time on screen. Sure Victoria is brave, but also kind of meh. We never get to see her skills unlike Emily. Emily is brave, talented and truly love Victor, and grow up at the end. You get to see her developpement as a character, she's great. Victoria didn't has that. Anyways, love that movie ♥
@Cat_tiee
@Cat_tiee Жыл бұрын
@@opheliebell22 I don't think you understand the concept of consent, and since you 'love the movie' so much, your comment sounds extremely biased to me. You could have gone on refuting my claims in a more respectable and analytical manner. If it is just fiction why are you so pissed off? Also how is Victoria 'meh'? (I seriously wouldn't mind an explanation here) Just because she does get enough screen time? Let me remind you she almost threatened her life by trying to let everyone know what happened to Victor when she saw the corpse of Emily taking him away. She could have been declared as insane or out of her mind, a perfect reason to restrain someone or being thrown into a mental asylum. I don't think a woman deserves to be called 'meh' when she is truly oppressed and disregarded by her family who only want financial gains through her marriage and want her to be a puppet in their hands. I also never said Victor 'got blamed for clutching' Emily, I said he ESCAPED HER clutches. If I should imagine the situation by putting myself in her situation, you can also do the same by reversing the gender roles and think if it would be such a good idea as a movie at all. Nothing wrong with questioning and analysis situations be it fiction or not. But if it sounds gross with the genders reversed, it is gross without as well. Remember the audience gets affected/influenced by what it sees in the movies, especially children. I could go on and on about all the problematic stuff in the movies like these and would love to point it all out but in a comment section of a KZbin video, not worth my time.
@Cat_tiee
@Cat_tiee Жыл бұрын
@@opheliebell22 oh and did you even consider the fact that Victor always wanted to marry Victoria, even since he met her? He did not want to leave the prospects of marrying her and only when he saw that she was getting married to someone else, did he finally accept Emily and decided to go on with his marriage with her. In a marriage the feelings of both parties matter, Victor AND Emily, not JUST Emily. Just because she did love him doesn't mean he had to love her back and marry her with the same intention. It was a situation of misunderstanding, which could have been easily dealt with, had the characters communicated. But I am highlighting a classic cliche in movies without which the whole movie would make no sense and the story wouldn't go on, so you can disregard this point if you wish to.

Emily's closure and her murderer's justice felt more satisfying than her marriage to Victor would have, unless this was a much longer movie or series.

This is my whole opinion but Victor went with Victoria was the right choice, because while Emily wants to be married to her "true love" she never asked Victor if it was okay. Like when Victor said he would drink the whine poison to be with her, she didn't ask him if he may have some doubts about it. Yes he said he wanted to do drink it, but he only wants to die because Victoria was already married to Lord Barkis (I know I did not spelled that right). That and how Victoria was trying help Victor get out of a "relationship" he doesn't want to be in proves to me that Victoria does really care for him, meanwhile he's also trying to get back to her because he genuinely does care for her. Again this is my option I get why people like Emliy and Victor together, but it not really far to Emily when Victor has feelings for Victoria and Emily just pushes them to the side for her own feelings.
@opheliebell22
@opheliebell22 Жыл бұрын
That's because she really thought he did his vows for her in the first place, and for the scene he decides to die for her it's the old skeleton who asked him if he was sure. Emily was shocked if you remember the scene. And if I'm not wrong when Victor learn that Victoria is getting married, he whispers "how could she", making his grief of her in the next scene until he heard Emily and Elder Goutneck (pretty sure I spelled it wrong xD)
@thedemonsmind9637
@thedemonsmind9637 Жыл бұрын
@@opheliebell22 This is my second account, I couldn't reply on my first, it's not really that Emily cared about Victor at all she loved the idea of being married and she really didn't care who it was with really. When Victor found out that Victoria (the person he genuinely cared about) was getting married to another person, it broke his heart. If Emily really did care about Victor she would constantly ask is this okay or at the very least make sure he has no doubts about it, what she didn't she was so focused of being a bride that she didn't really care about Victor's true feelings. Even if he said his vowels to Emily he really didn't know it was a dead corpse he was putting his ring on, but Emily is so delusional about the idea of marriage that she isn't really listening to what Victor has to say about the whole situation. In the entire movie, in my opinion Emily is in love of idea of being a bride not Victor!

I believe the scene of Emily turning into butterflies and flying off symbolizes her spirit finding peace and ascending into Heaven, which leads me to believe that the Land of the Dead is a form of purgatory where the dead stay because they're not ready to move on, they have something tying them down that they can't fully cross over to the next life. Edit: P.S., could you review Wallace and Gromit the Curse of the Were-rabbit? That's a good movie, don't know if it really has any dark moments but I'd say at least give it a look

I think the ending was good the way it was as it resolves alot of the establishing characterizations and a poetic resolution to Emily's tragic story. In the "According to plan" song it shows how both Victor and Victoria are constrained by the expectations of their families', but they both have hope for a quiet rebellion by marrying someone that they like and having a loving relationship. He liked Victoria because she showed how she had desires outside of society's expectations in the first piano scene where they meet and he had hope that their relationship could be more than duty. Emily, on the other hand, represents an excess of rebellion and romance (in the dramatic sense). She eloped with Lord Barkis and he killed her. She essentially wants Victor to elope with her and wants to do the same. He agrees only because of a sense of duty to fulfill the accidental vows he made to her and to give her the happy ending he feels is lost to him due to the news that Victoria is marrying someone else. He resigns himself the new expectations of this new society (the land of the dead) and tries to content himself by forging a friendship with Emily. But Emily sees this and realizes that he is only trying to please her because Victoria has been removed as an option because Emily took Victor away from his own life like Barkis did to her by killing her and taking away her choices. She realizes that she needs to step back and stop stealing away the others' choice just because she had hers stolen. Butterflies symbolize death and I think her turning into them implies that she has moved on to another plain and truly let go. Her situation with Barkis mirrored her situation with Victor only with the roles reversed and she stopped before she could do to Victor what Barkis did to her.

I honestly adore the ending of this movie- I think that Emily is the emotional subject of the film. Victor is the eyes through which we see, but the movie is about Emily's emotional journey and her healing. So, when she decides to step back and call off the wedding, it's because she truly cares for Victor, and she's in a place where now, she doesn't want to take away some else's happiness for her own. She got more than the wedding she always wanted- she faced her past, she found companionship in someone who loved her for her, and she was able to move on now that her unfinished business was finished.

I do agree that Victor should’ve chosen Emily, but when you think about it Emily was the character who was the most developed. She wanted nothing more than marriage before realising that she needs to be free and instead gives Victor his chance with Victoria which to me symbolises her true self. I am a sucker when it comes to selfless characters since I can relate to them and Emily is no different, she pretty much chose to give Victor a chance instead of a … deathly chance I know that was a terrible pun, but it’s a good pun at that P.s you could also say that the butterflies reference her freedom, but our host already said that and if I said I’d be stealing his thunder. To me the film’s true main character was Emily as from this review she was more developed and I really need to rewatch this film to see if my idea/vision is actually not a dreamers vision

The idea of this film comes from a Russian-Jewish folktale based on reoccurring tragedies. Antisemitic gangs in Russia tended to kill whole wedding parties, the bride being usually the first one to die. :( EDIT: Also, I like the ending. In the original tale, the "death has already parted us"-technicality is the end. The poor bride collapses on the floor after hearing this, now truly dead. The living bride takes pity on her, goes to the lifeless skeleton, folds the wedding gown deftly and assures the corpse bride that she and her groom won't forget her. She promises to live her life for the bride, aka, the upcoming marriage is also the dead bride's marriage and their future children will also be her children. The living bride then buries the dead bride, telling her not to worry. The tale of the corpse bride is then passed on to the future generations in the couple's family. I feel like the ending promises Emily something similar. Victor and Victoria definitely won't forget her and will always deem her as part of their family.
