The A&W rootbeer in Malaysia is now called sarsaparilla (the term used by the English) because muslims here are not fond of the word " beer". The same goes to ginger beer which are now called gingerade.

Saya benar2 ingat kerana semasa belajar driving di Kallang Stadium, SG, instructor saya ajak minum bersama. Terperanjat juga bila ajak minum root 'beer'. Tapi tersenyum dia, pastu dia cakap sarsi campur ice cream.. He he he 😇

nowadays, the A&W taste is not as good as it was during the 90s.. i don't know how to describe it, but it tastes less than before.. the coney dog, onion rings, quite a disappointment now.. however, waffle ice cream is still good and tasty

@@Steve-Owens Exactly. Not sure it's still there though , there were talks of demolishing it years ago. It's an old school fast food joint back then. Forget about A&W burgers they do Hotdogs the best and their onion rings those days were good.

Back in the late 80s when the A&w first started their 24hrs restaurant my uncle or father usually brought us kids t8 the one at the KL Railway Station (the old one, not KL Sentral) late a t night in a school holidays or Saturday nights. Then it closed down when there's no traffic there as most of us now go thru KL Sentral for the train in the late 90s.

Steve, I 'm glad you liked the Root Beer float. Yes, I had my first taste of an A&W root beer in PJ at the chain was first introduced. It is still a family favourite. The Root Beer is just so thirst quenching when you are really thirsty!

I used to like A&W Rootbeer float, but not anymore, the ice cream tastes ... cheap. However I have childhood memories of A&W, it was the very first fast food chain in !Malaysia

Yes, that ice-cream is really just frosty milk with loads of sugar, they may have waved a vanilla bean past the factory window but that's about as vanilla as it gets :o)

I seriously thought root beer is a universal drink. Later I found out that it's an American drink. But you're right, root beer= sarsaparilla. We even have a jungle tree called pokok Sarsi. Smells and taste (boil the root & even the bark of a smaller tree) exactly like sarsaparilla.

To be honest root bear is far from being American. These beers made from foot such as Ginger Bear Dandelion Beers were bought over to the America's by the Europeans..

Back in the 1960's and early 70's, we had an A&W in our town in Ontario Canada when I was a kid. It was a drive in, where you ordered your food from your car and they would bring it out to you and hook a tray on to your car window. At that time A&W offered, burgers, hotdogs, fries, chubby chicken and fish n chips and cold rootbeer. I also remember in the summer all us kids would gather our money together and purchase a gallon glass bottle of rootbeer and get a bunch of cardboard drinking cups. Then we would all be drinking rootbeer in the park next to the outdoor swimming pool, waiting for the pool to open. LOL yeah well. All that rootbeer, tiny bladders and pools. LOL. Anyway I have only been to an A&W once since then and they are not the same. Now they are like any fast food burger joint, no drive in, no chubby chicken or fish n chips and you can't get glass rootbeer glasses. I broke my vintage mug a couple years ago. I used it for fixing myself a large coffee at home and I miss it.

Here in Malaysia we also have two A&w drive-ins but the one in PJ closed its doors about 3-4 years ago to make way for a new building u guess. And the one in Seremban also stopped their drive - in service about 15 to 20 years ago

Hello Steve & Michelle. Hope you are both well and flourishing. Oh MATE????? ROOT BEER. I would kill for one right now. I remember back in 1962, having my first cold Root Beer in a can. I just loved that flavour. After a few years, Root Beer disappeared off the Milk Bar shelves, and that was the last I saw of it. As a matter of fact. I went into a Woollies yesterday and asked them if they sold Root Beer. Sales Staff looked at me as it I was taking the Mickey. They had NEVER heard of Root Beer. Someone said try a Dan Murphy's which I did as Dan Murphy's is part of the Woollies empire. They have a case of 24 cans for $56.00 AUD, and what is even better; the Root Beer is made by A & W in the States. SALVATION! Everything going alright mate? I haven't had much time to look at this goggle box of late, but when I do, I will want to see a lot more of the Malaysian dishes you and the lovely Michelle are noshing on. BTW mate, did you get my question about the number of Kms you travelled in Siri Lanka in that TukTuk? I just curious. Chat later "old" son. Cheers!

Love A&W. My grandma used to bring me there when i visit her on the weekends. It's hard to find the outlet here now though. I just stab the ice cream using my straw then slurp it with the root beer. more creamy? i guess. love the curly fries, burgers with the pickles.
