In the 2nd part of this 2 part video we complete fitting the transmission, tailshaft and gear lever and linkages. We then fit the tray back onto the truck and once that is complete we test drive. Job done! #oldtruck #semitruck #internationalharvester #twinstick #truck #trucking #mechanical #mechanicalengineering

Love the video mate. Brings back a few memories of childhood days seeing these old buses used in anger! A tip for your lathework, reduce stickout of your tool if possible and if getting chatter reduce revs. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, the job will make a noise. Always wanted a small truck to play with but they are scarce in Southern Tassy. Cheers and keep saving them!

Thank you mate and thanks for the advice. I don’t use lathes much at all. Glad it brought back memories for you. This is one video that I thought and hoped would do really well but didn’t get many views at all. It was a lot of effort to make it. Anyway that’s how it works. Hopefully you will come across something down there mate. I’m sure there’s a few laying around somewhere

@Steve’s Place Down Under thanks, I get to work on a mates old bangers for him. He's got a 1913 T Ford he uses. He just finished a 1500 klm run around the top of Tassy. I didn't think we had that many roads! And he has a left hand drive A model. I have to put a joey box in that one next week to improve revs on the highway. Thanks for the reply.

Hi mate thanks. I wasn’t going to but I thought it’s not a high power vehicle so I’m sure it will be just fine. I wouldn’t with a bigger prime mover or something that’s heavier and hauls loads. I hope to be fitting a 120hp Perkins diesel to it in the near future but sure it will still be fine

Gday Mick thanks for watching. I often think when I’m playing around with these old ones how blokes did it years ago. I guess nobody knew anything different back then mate. Hard workers that’s for sure. I often hear how blokes worked on them on the side of the road or did what they had to to keep them going.

Great job. Looks like it was always in the truck. My cat was curled on my lap until you started the lathe at which point he dug his claws in and ripped my thighs in a rapid get away. I still enjoyed watching as usual. 🚚
@stevesplacedownunder
@stevesplacedownunder Жыл бұрын
Hi mate thanks. Yes I tried to make it match the original condition of the truck, like a factory fitted unit. I don’t think the lathe was meant to be making a sound like that but it was cutting fine so that’s all that matters I guess 🤣. Hopefully the cat came back when it realised. Glad you enjoyed mate

Unless you are heavily loaded you probably only use the main box until high gear and then go into overdrive. But if you enjoy grabbing more gears that’s fine to. Just kinda cool. Does that original six have enough power to pull it in high&overdrive? I would think so empty or lightly loaded. Wish I had one to put in my 89 six man square body one ton. I have a 427 tall deck truck engine in it and it would probably help out with fuel mileage when empty or lightly loaded. Keep the videos coming, I enjoy them.
@stevesplacedownunder
@stevesplacedownunder Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, it’s more for the overdrive gear but the owner has been a driver all his working life and wanted to have something nostalgic to drive as he loves changing gears and I fully agree with him. It goes alright mate on straight roads and empty, as it usually is for club events, but yes it took a bit more power out of it but still alright. I have a 120hp Perkins diesel in a White super power truck that I may graft into it. That’s if it runs. I’ve never started it and owned it near 10 years! One of those boxes would help your truck mate indeed. Plenty more videos to come

As always look forward to seeing your videos great job on the fabrication stuff cool to see it all done in house. Old mate has changed a few gears in his time he knows his stuff, when you start to get the hang of it your already in top gear haha. Those trucks are basically just barley a 3 speed, seen your comment on another comment about adding a diesel engine to it maybe you should consider changing the main gear box to one with more gears to really give your arm a workout. Got a old dodge here with a 10 speed rr and 3 speed joey and a 2 speed diff it is unreal to drive especially with the gm your left arm doesn't get a rest.
@stevesplacedownunder
@stevesplacedownunder Жыл бұрын
Gday mate thanks for the nice comment. He’s driven trucks all his life, and being his truck he was giving that petrol engine more than I was. The engine I plan to use has a 5 speed already on it so the original main box will be pulled out with the petrol. I know what you mean about gm trucks. I have 6 Detroit powered trucks here, all 71 series but the 671 in particular gives your arm a workout also. That dodge would be lovely mate
@ChxlRotMG
@ChxlRotMG Жыл бұрын
@@stevesplacedownunder Yes it tends to be like that when you take it for a spin for the first time your mindful of the revs but when the owner hops in the seat he gives it more and your like so that's how you drive it, those old petrol engines tend to want revs got another dodge with a 318 v8 and if you don't rev it you won't get any of the gears the 4 speed is a bit tired so you tend to not change it like a car and bang straight into the next gear you kind of hold it in front of the gear and it will fall into place itself. the gm dodge is no powerhouse being a 53 series but she sure pulls like a tractor with all the gears.

Thanks Ron I’m happy with the job mate. Will be fitting a diesel at some stage to that truck. The horse hair is hard to work with mate. The floor has a thick coating that’s been brushed on at some stage so hopefully it won’t affect this one.

Hi mate sorry for the late reply. Thank you for watching. Yes it’s a spicer and I’m near certain it’s a 31. I’ve not had anything to do with rebuilding them or really know anyone who has but there’s not a lot involved in it I don’t think from doing other transmissions myself. I can’t give any advice on them because have only fitted this one, I have a few myself but only ever used them.
