My take would be: Split the cost of food, cheap broken items that both use and most basic living expenses 50:50. Each should have their own separate accounts, but without hiding the amount, and with enough respect to not ask for any money from your partners account if it is not offered. That is super fair by my standards, and I'm pretty poor.

I don't believe in joint accounts. I like the idea of having four accounts between us. But I personally will always haveba secret account that my partner never knows about no matter what. I prefer fresh money ( foreign currency) just to be safe. It will be safely tucked away in a foreign country and only my son will know and have access to. There's no way I'm ever being that transparent to someone who can wake up one day and decide he wants someone else. My kid will always be my kid period! I'm definitely not interested in anyone else's money either. I don't care to know.
