For learning the notes on the fret board. I'm doing this now. I've known shapes in different positions for a long time. Now when play a scale shape in a particular position I force myself to call out the notes as I play them. This does a couple things. It acquaints you with where a particular note is located and it also makes you aware of how many sharps and flats are in a particular scale and what they are. This approach is working fairly well for me. A suggestion.

Steve is a wonderful human being. I’m in and out of depression. I can feel his heart in mine when he speaks because he is very authentic. I’ve almost quit my band that gigs and has horns and funky cool music because I think I suck after playing so many years and Steve has helped me remember my passion. Sometimes he moves me to tears. I’m broken after a divorce and made many bad choices and I wish I would have been smarter with things like discipline on my guitar and also with money. I’m literally selling all my gear right now because of exactly what he says here. I never put these principles into place and I’m so ready for financial security I don’t even care about music much of the time. Financial stress takes up so much creative space. Steve had more room for creativity because he was smart about money. Young people please listen to Steve. The bell of truth rings loudly here. Love, Charles

I'm blown away, not only by what you accomplish on the instrument, which is beyond awesome and amazing in its own right, but also by the fact that you have a strong connection to spiritual principles. I hear you speak of many of the same teachings that I'm familiar with and try to embody in my life: A Course In Miracles, Eckhart Tolle, Ramana Maharshi, Paramhansa Yogananda, Mooji, meditation, etc. In this video, I see a copy of Sri Nisargadatta's book, I Am That, in the background, as well as the Buddha t-shirt you're wearing. It's extra cool to feel connected with you as a fellow guitar player AND as a spiritual practitioner. Thanks for your Gifts to this world, Steve! Much Love!

A fun scale concept to make learning the fretboard interesting are Lael scales. The derivation was a combination of Lydian and Aeolian Scale- notes A,BCD#E,FG. With these odd artificial scales if you use it to derive chords you get oddities that could hardly be considered diatonic, but this is the point! While the true lael scale was the starting point, it got fun to raise the 7th, lower the second, producing A,Bb,C,D#,E,F,G#. As one can see it(Super Lael) produces 2 clusters of 3 half steps. Extrapolating the chords; 1.ACE, (minor)2.BbD#F (this chord is what Steely Dan used to call a "mu" chord, in this case Eb mu or D# mu) 3.CEG#(Augmented) 4.D#FA ( F Dominant)5.EG#Bb (Another very flexible structure I like to use often as a half diminished chord) 6.FAC (Major!) 7.G#BbD# (Suspension). Using this as a closed end system (and later morphing into other systems) delivers a unique musical language that specializes in quirkiness. After working with this oddity, you'll REALLY know the fretboard since it demands a concentrated attention to smoothly work its bizzare nature out. I wrote a pamphlet about the other forms of lael scales and this one is the weirdest of them all!

Thanx Steve for answers. For years you inspire me to practice, learn music theory, change guitar, take lesson, practice, play. I'm sure your music inspired many people like me for be better guitarist. If you read this comment, maybe one question to you: While you play guitar do you sometimes has feeling (or something similar) that through guitar you are "singing" or expressing some divine, perfect/infintivly great melody? I have feeling that in mind i have (i heard) some beautiful melody, that will make all people cry and smile but my technique, my skills just "try" to express it and of course only part of this beautifull melody I'm able to express.

FWIW: copper shielding in the pickup cavity is useful -- doesn't negatively impact tone. Your mileage may vary with something like the EHX Hum Debugger -- it's useful with some guitars, and some tones -- but not all. Also -- if the hum is in the amp: guitar volume down, clean power, no florescent lights, and the amp is a tube amp, consider different tubes. I've recently acquired both the ISP Decimator, and the EHX Humdebugger -- useful utilities. The use of the Hum Debugger can allow you to lower the threshold of the already fairly transparent Decimator (the Decimator gate lifts based on the guitar output anyway -- not the gain going into it) -- if you're pickup is kind of iffy, high-gain tones with the Hum Debugger can have an almost slap-back effect -- I think this is because the pedal carves out so much tone before it becomes saturated, that the sound is irrevocably screwed up -- your mileage may vary, and quiet pickups help. Sorry for the book -- but I've also been working on that problem too. A device like the debugger will remove a lot of noise, but when there's a lot removed, there's less desirable sound left to work with.

I’ve noticed not very many artists models are not available in a lefty. Ibanez is always so limited. That’s why I haven’t bought an Ibanez yet. Like for instance, your sea foam green model, I would have loved that model in a lefty. They don’t keep certain models for very long either. Anyway, hope to see a PIA in a lefty soon. Thanks again for all that you do Steve. It’s been a blast listening to your music throughout my life.

The beginning of this sounds kinda like like "Feathers" a song I love to play along with, except I've gotta change all my settings as the tone isn't Steve Vai normal (I don't even use pedals but I had to change the pickup configuration and contour to pretty much be the opposite of the tone I'd usually use.) This time you kept your normal tone sounds, and the tune is different but just as beautiful.

Hey Steve! I am able to make you some cables for use with splitter boxes which eliminate the hum. The humming is caused by a "ground loop" and can be solved by connecting grounds of different sources/destinations at the right place. In regards of proper grounding even fractions of a millimeter count. If you want to do your own research on this topic, good sources are the power amplifier design books by Douglas Self or Bob Cordell. Best wishes and all the health in the world from Germany!

Unfortunately a single coil pickup also acts as an antenna as well as a microphone (subtle difference) which picks up the 60 cycle frequency. Now if you cant play or live with lowering the gain to reduce the hum then there are options, including position 4 on the strat. Some guitars have what is called a "silent electronic circuit" built into the guitar. A music man guitar has something like this installed. You can also insert a gate or noise eliminator to minimise the 60 cycle hum. Like Steve Vai said - "I dont know how Hendrix did it". Noise can be your friend, it can also be a nightmare.
