What a class act. Steve is not only an extraordinary guitarist/musician, he also seems to be an incredibly cool, down to earth guy as well. It was interesting to hear his words in this interview. I could totally understand everything he meant concerning doing what you love and disregarding anything else and what other people think. He is one of my all time favorite guitarists for his uniqueness and heart. I am looking forward to meeting him soon. Don't know when, but I will! Love ya bro.

Great video. It's very nice to see 'my digital' guitar instructor interviewing one of my favourite guitarplayers. Well done Justin! Thank you Steve!

the most wise, moving and inspiring "music" video I've ever seen so far. This has to be shown / told to anyone that is willing to excel in their own field, artistic or not. "Follow your bliss, follow what keeps you awake" is the message I can read here...and I couldn't agree more.

I think its awesome that Steve Vai is so positive and advocates hard work. With persistence there are rewards and the rewards are not fame but the love of music

This guy is deep. To me, it seems he really goes out of his way trying to evade missconception and missunderstandings when it comes to his woodshedding years. He's really humble and he's really trying to help people while at the same time being honest and keeping integrity. I owe this man thanks. :)

I'm also in the same situation. I'm 44 and currently playing covers in bars on the weekends. It's good release to jam in front of people but as you and Sean both say, the level of players in the area is different than what I want. I finally got in touch with a friend and he suggested I come by his place and record. Although I prefer the interaction of real players, I found recording to be a satisfying creative outlet.

I intuit what he said as not letting ones weakness hamper ones playing( getting upset or no motivation) and that by doing what you are good at, buliding, progressing and learning, one can over come those weaknesses. Improve what you do, move forward with those tools and what you thought was a weakness is not so much anymore.

This is a great interview. Steve has always been an amazing talent and personality with loads of creativity. However he would not be where he is today without a loads of P R A C T I C E. The dreaded P word. I have been teaching for a year and a half and i have improved ten fold because i have now have structured practices. If only i had done this when i was younger.

well I'm just starting my music journey, As of now I know that what Steve does is what i'd love to do, Instrumentals. I don't want to be like him, but he is my biggest influence, I want to be a virtuoso, not some other regular guitar player that doesn't get out of that little box of power chords and pentatonic scales. I want to be unique, but still influenced by Steve's style and musical voice. I hope i get to meet him in person some day.

Hi Steve, I am 42 and I feel like I am finally getting decent on the guitar. I like what you said about ignoring what other people say, but I am increasingly having trouble finding compatible, available musicians in my area and level to play with, and lots of people telling me there's not much hope at my age of doing more than play local bars. I dont want to play covers for a couple of bucks... is there any hope for a aging guitarist in a semi rural area of breaking out and finding an audience?

Get a small recording setup (sized depending on budget). Maybe a mid range keyboard so you can compose and play backing tracks. I've had no piano lessons, but I can stumble my way through programming a sequencer since they've gotten more user friendly, I'm sure you can too! Once you're happy with the song (sans vocals), post it on fandalism, youtube or any other social site. The singers will come to you.

@ Soundillusions94xyz- What he is saying comes with a little bit of experience playing any instrument. When Steve plays, he is very technically advanced through his style. However, the way you get a distinct sound is by using what your best with. Notice how Steve likes to sweep, tap, and use the bar alot? These are examples of things he is really good at. I myself do alot of tapping and legato, because it is what I am good at. Exaggerating your strengths develops your sound, but like Steve said

ok I like steve he's beyond a wizard on guitar but for most of us first you need time most of us work with no time to practice money so you can house, cloth and buy guitar rigs that cost as much as a house backing investors "ie" record label contract, endorsements from guitars, amps tours & money to pay employees like techs, lawyers and such oh too! time for your spouse and family he's great! and made it. Rock on that was a great interview
