Thanks for the clear, simple video. We are wanting to run / charge a portable device powered by a 12v, 7A/H AGM battery, from a car cigarette lighter plug, and this looks like the perfect circuit for limiting Amps and Volts to safe levels. My question: Is there a built-in function, or a simple modification for disconnecting the load battery if its voltage should fall below the safe minimum for gel batteries? Some customers will likely take the running device out of their utes into the field and may forget/fail to plug it back into the car in time, thus compromising the battery.

Brilliant video and on the basis of that, I purchased an identical module. alas although I wired it up as shown in the video and the laptop adapter was showing 19.5 volts on multimeter. the red and green leds were lit on the module and despite turning the voltage adjuster both ways. it wouldn't change from showing output of only 1.49 volts. I will be returning the module and hopefully the replacement will work as shown. I raise my hat to you sir on a clear and informative video and only wished I could say yes it works for me.

Venkatesh Narayanan I know this has been a very long time so probably no longer matters but while yes that one would work it only allows you to adjust the voltage it does not have the adjustable amperage. And that is very very cheap price for those I paid $5 usd for one unit similar to that but it does have a built on voltage monitor screen so I don’t have to use a multimeter.

Thank you Steve, I am so happy for your prompt response. Can you pls give me a detailed description of how to accomplish this? I am a novice in this field; but I can fix it if you give me the necessary me guidance especially concerning the installation of a diode. By the way, will this setup require an inverter for the laptop charger to pick up the energy coming from the solar panel? Thank you in advance.
@SteveWillsonKujur
@SteveWillsonKujur 7 жыл бұрын
+Muhammad Salau yes you need a inverter or a boost converter to boost the 12 v Connection 1. Solar panels got 2 wire negative and positive 2 . Converter got 2 input and 2 output 3 . Output directly goes to battery okay? 4. Input - connect solar panel positive wire to input positive . 5. Input - connect Solar panal negative wire to a diode before connecting it to input negative . got it ?

Nice video!!! If there’s a device that runs on a 6V 4.5 AH SLA battery, isn’t it possible to take it out and connect the device leads to a 6V AC to DC power source and run the device through an electric outlet without the battery? If so should any consideration be made to the Amps of the adapter to be used or any 6V adapter would work?

I used this to charge my 12 volt battery on my Bluetooth boombox, works perfect. My fuses were blown on my volt meter and didn't work at first. I use a laptop charger putting out 19 volt and connect it to a 2.5 jack and then to the step down board that brings it down to 12 volts that I need. Thanks Steve
@wanting2makethemoney
@wanting2makethemoney Жыл бұрын
Sorry I realize this is old, but I have a question. What are is the 2.5 jack you add in? I am trying to picture what your saying but don't understand that part. Are you meaning you in-line a 2.5a plug in and then reduce the voltage on the voltage screw like he has? I have a Monster RR2 speaker and I am having a hard time getting it to charge, but I think it is because I am using a 10a 12.5v cord and it states on the back to only use a 15a cable? I don't think it should take as long as it does to charge. It has been plugged in for 15hrs or more and moved one light. That didn't last long at all. I recently purchased the battery so I had it checked at Advance and it is good to go still do didn't hurt it, so do I have to let it charge longer and if so I need to figure out something more practical charging even if I have to charge outside the speaker. It is very easy to access anyways. Thanks in advance, and appreciate your response if your able.

@@wanting2makethemoney always remember that the amps on whatever power supply your using has to be greater than the number of amps on the device that your trying to charge. And that's because amps are pulled out not pushed in like volts so when the device has met its required number of amperage it automatically stops drawing out anymore the device only draws out what it needs and thats why the power plug/supply your using has to have a higher amperage rating than your device. Hope that help. Good luck 👍

Hi great vid! And great to see how you did the setting upTHANKS. I blew my meter in Amp before so were a bit nervous! I want to ask why you leave on cable the "lump" by the plug on charger? Has it any use? Seems a bit in the way. thx
@gillyarchtop
@gillyarchtop 4 жыл бұрын
The “lump” is an inductor. Inductor: They are used to block AC while allowing DC to pass; inductors designed for this purpose are called chokes. They are also used in electronic filters to separate signals of different frequencies.

basically reduces interference caused by current running in cables. So without out it, if you took your laptop's power supply near e.g. a radio it would interfere with the radio station reception. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_bead

I have been thinking of doing this, but do you need a "battery charger" or can you just use a power supply if you have a overcharge protection module going AFTER the buck converter?
@whorayful
@whorayful 6 жыл бұрын
I have used this exact little switchmode module, they are really good BUT they are destroyed almost instantly if the input voltage is removed while a battery is still connected to the output. The addition of a reverse bias protection diode from the output positive terminal to the input positive diode will protect it.

Thanks for the great video. I have a question about a similar subject. I live in an area where there is a constant breeze and want to build a small wind generator. I thought it would be nice to charge my phone from this generator. I am new to electronics so if this seems like a silly question I apologize. Since the power being stored from the wind generator would fluctuate with wind speed, would that harm anything you are charging? Sort of like a power surge. Or are there things you can add to avoid such a situation? Thanks

Can this be used with a 30V adapter laptop charger to charge 24V batteries? 2. Is there any way to install this component on some standard case so that we can use it for normal use ? 3. Any way to take care of the heat generated - anyway to attach a heat sink? Thanks a lot.

1 You need to check the concerning IC'S datasheet to see if input voltage of 30 can be used. I think this one is 32v but still check. 2 Yes but it depends on creatively kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKDReHqLoqqViZY 3You can find small heatsinks exactly for these modules on eBay or equivalent.

It took awhile but read through all the responses and would like to confirm and ask a question(s). The order of disconnect from the battery if it is important is what battery first then supply? Never looked at the inside of my multimeter so have to ask what does the input look like when connected in current measuring mode? The diode you speak of for preventing the Solar panel from acting as a load at night, if used for this purpose, is in series with the positive side between the solar panel and battery? My battery is 5Ah 12V. Marking on the battery Standby use: 13.6-13.8 Voltage regulation at .75amps Cyclic use; 14.5-14.9 Voltage regulation at 1.5amps. In my case, the output at the battery for this charging device should be 14.5 to 14.9 and set the current to 1.5amps. Thank you

Hi, I see that the specs for this step-down module are input voltage of 1.25-36V. If I want to charge a 12v SLA battery fully, I'd need to use a power supply of somewhere between ~15v and 36v. What would happen if I used a power supply of less than the float voltage of the battery (14v in the case of this video)? Say if I used a power supply of 13.7V (a common 12v wall wart for some home appliances), with this step down converter (set to 14v) on a 12v battery... from my understanding, the battery would charge to the 13.7v (assuming it was previously lower), and the it would automatically 'float' at this voltage because the charger can not supply electricity to the battery anymore because there is no voltage differential? This would mean that the battery would be nearly fully charged, but I would be in no danger of damaging it, correct? I understand it would be more useful to just use a higher voltage power supply, but I'm thinking of how friendly this would be for either charging with whatever is on hand, intermittent solar charging, or in case of user error/ignorance.

These low cost, simple switching regulators are brilliant for this kind of job when a DC supply (of the wrong voltage but the right power is available) and I have bought many for many different types of project. Great informational video BUT ... 1. There is simply NO need to cut off the jack plug from the PSU at all. This is plain wasteful and reduces future flexibility. Simply obtain a suitable jack socket and wire THAT to the regulator instead. This means you can keep using your laptop supply ... for other things (e.g. other low cost voltage supplies) if not for supplying your laptop as normal. 2. When using this type of switching regulator one should ALWAYS fit a Schottky diode (or diode pair) between the regulator output and the battery to protect the regulator from probable reverse voltage damage when the mains is deliberately or accidentally disconnected before disconnecting the regulator from the battery. One diode ... a few cents and problem solved, circuit protected. 3. by implementing 1. above, the regulator can also be housed in a plastic weatherproof box together with a low cost voltage or volts/amps display available from eBay or Banggood or others for less than a burger, and can be left connected to a car battery in the car - set the output volts (measured AFTER the Schottky diode) closer to 14.4 volts and the output current limit to 4 or 5 amps for a large, wet tech battery e.g car though. A permanent connection can be made to a dedicated charging socket inside the vehicle cabin ready to just have a laptop supply plugged into it whenever charging is required. No opening the bonnet, no messing with croc clips just plug in, switch on the mains and away to go. Just remember this will NOT provide enough power to start a car, just to recharge the battery over a few HOURS! It's not an instant fix. 4. If you implement 3. above with a volt or volt/amp meter, remember to fit the meter AFTER the output diode otherwise your charge/battery voltage will not show correctly although the amps might (depending on exact meter type and circuit wiring). If you intend to leave it in the vehicle permanently remember to EITHER fit ONE extra lead input to the box - an ignition switched positive feed to the +ve connection on the meter, OR the meter can be connected direct to the incoming supply (voltage permitting) and because of the Schottky diode on the output there will be no power from the battery to power it either.. 5. WHATEVER amps you wish to utilise, ensure the input supply can provide them, but remember though that although a 19v, 4A supply will have almost 80 watts available assuming the regulator is 85% efficient (they usually are, or better) then taking a conservative 80% figure ... 80 Watt x 80% = 64 watts at 14.4 volts = 4.4 A. 85% efficiency gives 4.7A and 90% efficiency gives 5A! How can you get more amps out than in? You are converting ENERGY not voltage so look at the power IN compared to the power OUT multiplied by the expected (or measured) efficiency of the regulator. 6. Finally, if you want to be able to charge OTHER types of batteries (e.g. rechargeable electric drill batteries, then simply replacing the two on-board trim pots with the same value panel mounted ones will allow you to set both Volts AND current EXTERNALLY so that your supply can be set for constant volts (lead-acid charging) OR constant current (NiCd or NiMh) but be wary of using it to charge Lion or LiPo batteries/cells due to their much more complex charging criteria. For 18 volt batteries you'll almost certainly need a higher voltage input than 19v. It MAY be sufficient to use 24v but I'd expect you to require a few more than that even ... say 26 to 28 volts.

Just to show I wasn't just trolling the other day with my long comment above I was actually awaiting a couple of parts for my own 12v lead-acid charger based on exactly this idea. The working (but still incomplete) charger is now in use keeping my vehicle battery topped up. Unfortunately, the meter I received from China quite some time ago doesn't appear to be able to display amps so I am awaiting a new one. I also have ordered another regulator since the ones I currently have (several) do not have any current limit setting pot. Consequently I set the output volts a bit lower than where I'd like them to be at 14.1v open circuit and it is keeping my battery very nicely sat at 13.8 to 13.9 with a trickle charge of around 360 to 370 mA (measured with my mutimeter). Another thing I'm awaiting is a pack of heatsink adhesive pads so that I can properly affix the two heatsinks I have, to the regulator chip. The one finned heatsink you can see is basically just stuck down with silver heatsink compound! You should also be able to see the black "transistor" like object just next to the regulator which is actually the dual Schottky diode I mentioned should be used to protect the circuit from reverse voltage from a still connected battery should the input power be lost or removed before disconnecting the battery itself. As I mentioned I have the meter connected to confirm the battery voltage but I had a rethink about what I said previously and I power the meter from the incoming supply rather than the battery output as that prevents undue drain on the battery once power is removed. However ... If a 9v battery e.g. a PP3 is connected at the input it can just about power the meter but not provide sufficient voltage for the regulator to operate and the meter would then show the true battery volts. A working ammeter would confirm this of course. I had to come back and re-edit this due to a complete shambles with Google providing links that didn't work so apologies to anyone who has been confused and also to anyone looking for the other replies i made to try to post pictures - IO deleted those and instead put all the pictures into a public Drive folder: goo.gl/Rn2dXY which hopefully all can access without problem

Jerome Daniel sorry I'm not certain what you actually mean. Is the "boat" 12v or 24 volts? if 24 volts and you need to use a 12 V fan (or fans) then just get one of these little DC to DC regulators from eBay, set the output to 12v and connect as many fans as you need up to the maximum supply capability (with and without appropriate heatsinks as stated previously). if the boat voltage is 12volts already, then just connect your fans direct to the 12v supply.

You used DC to DC Buck converter which can give 14V 2A is that a constant current source because considering property of lead acid charging its current remains constant for a while and then it decreases to around 0.03A ? Can 12V 2A SMPS will suffice to charge 12V Lead Acid Battery?

3:14 how you manage to measure the current directly connecting to the meter? As I know I have to connect on of the terminal to the circuit via multimeter to the battery or power source. Can I measure the of an ac adapter through directly by connecting to a meter?
