Hungary wasnt that bad, they were just scared of our team full of big names. We had players like Mijatovic, Savicevic, Stojkovic, Mihajlovic, Jugovic... all world class players from biggest european clubs. Hungarians never played against such players, they only watched them on TV so they were scared and lost with much higher result then they should have.

As a Hungarian I have to disagree with you. This result perfectly showed the quality difference between the 2 teams in the mid-late '90s. Maybe our players were scared too but if they were it just makes it worse: a sportsman should NEVER be scared of the opponents wherever their players play. 1-7 was the reality. Just like the 0-5 in the second leg.

No. Hungary was lucky to get the 2.place in the group, and they hoped for a not very strong opponent. Csank, the hungarian kaptain, should have seen that this time he has no chance, but he was blind. If Mijatovic would not have missed the penalty, they could have win even against holland. This mach was very similar to the 6:3 in Wembley, Hungary vs England in 1953, or to the 7-1 in 1954. The difference between the teams, and players was this time the same as in 1953.

Thats our destroyed team you see here at its "best". The level of our coaches and managers sunk beyond any imagination. The footballing industry became an intouchable group of a few individuals, no one was able to be challenged or impeached, and the level and amount of work they did with our squads was getting closer and closer to nothing. None of our coaches felt the need to educate themselves or to improve their knowledge (if you still get money for this, then why bother). Look at the goals we conceded here, our coaches werent able to teach our players the simplest things, like how to defend a 2v2 situation down the flanks. Probably no one noticed, but Hungary didnt have a single coach or manager who went abroad to work with a proper team in a better footballing country (and the past 20-22 years only saw one single example of that, and no more). Basically all the workers in the industry were previous players, the training of our coaches was tweaked, so no one could get in from outside, and the level was dreadful. You need a proper doctor-level university decree if you wanna be a coach in Italy for example, in Hungary, you just had to have like a player career in the hungarian top flight, or second division, and you were guaranteed to become a coach. That was the result. Luckily we are now climbing up the ladder (rather slowly), the problem still exists, but weve managed to raise the level somewhat

I saw this match, Im so impressed that Hungary dont learn the leasson until today. They played, and try to play until now, well, touching the ball, trying to elaborate football as a south american team, but what they didnt and doesnt train well? bottom line, defense. Defensive, Hungary, even in their golden years, were and is a disaster in defense. I always hear about Puskas, Kocsis, Albert, etc, etc, but never hear about a hungarian goalkeeper or an hungarian defense. The day that they would train a good defense, just wait and see the hungarian return.

Megéltük már Mohácsot, sírtunk sokat Marseille(1969 Csehszlovákia) miatt, Irapuatoról ne is beszéljünk(1986 Szovjetúnió), akkor mi van a közelmúltból?, 1997 Jugoszlávia(bár ne nekünk kellett vna a pótselejtezőt játszani), 2005 Málta(na az ténylg kapufa volt), 2006 Montenegró(no comment) Remélem majd - ha 2.ikak leszünk - a pótselejtezőn mi fogunk így játszani oda-vissza(a gólok száma tök mind1 csak jussunk ki végre 1X - hanem többször)!!!!

We've already surived Mohács(1526, heavy defeat against the turkish empire), we've cried a lot for Marseille (1969, WC play-off 3rd match defeat against Checslovakia), don't talk about Irapuato(1986, WC group stage 0:6 defeat against USSR) and here's 1997's WC play-offs, we wish don't have to played it! Actually, most of the Hungarian comments praise the Yugoslav team for having such great players. So, we are not 'butthurt'. Then again, we beat Yugoslavia 2-0 in the Olympic final to win our first gold in 52. That to us, was more important than this game. We knew we had little chance in this playoff.

Ennyit tudtak. Egy szerb felrakta az egész meccset a KZbin-ra. Engem nagyon emlékeztetett a 6:3-ra meg a budapesti 7:1 -re az angolok ellen. Ugyanakkora volt a különbség a csapat és a játékosok között is, mint a Wembleyben. Tipikus, hogy a Csank 1-1 0-3 Norvégiával, és 1-1 0-1 Svájccal, (Finnek ellen mázli 1-1 ) nem fogta fel, hogy semmi esély. Ha beállnak védekezni, megúszták volna 2, vagy 3 góllal. Miért kellett ehhez 7-et kapni, hogy egy beképzelt magyar edző belássa ezt?
