Yeah, he had the loveliest brown eyes. Before he got sober, he never opened them at all, seems like. He was pale and sweaty, like someone with the world's worst hangover, and his drummer and bass player just look plain scared. They can never take their eyes off him because they never know when he's going to change from a solo back to the main body of the song. In this Austin City Limits concert, you actually see Stevie look back at them to let them know when the change is coming; they look so much more relaxed.

It’s a shame he died not long after this. Stevie had pulled himself together and was playing better than ever and seemed happy and contented.

🤠 Fans have often commented on the many sounds that Stevie could pull out of his beloved guitar, "No. 1." Crying, screaming, even growling. And this is the best song/recording I've ever heard to hear that low growl. I don't know how he did it, but you can hear a low growl coming from No. 1 throughout most of the tune. Simply amazing! 🐯🐯🐯🎸🎸🎸

@@DLynn 🤠 Yes he was. I got to see him perform live over a dozen times in and around Austin and Dallas back in the '80's, even got to meet him and take some personal photos which I treasure, and autographs. Recordings/videos don't do him justice, but yet, I am SO THANKFUL to have these images and sounds documented for all of us to witness and appreciate his incredible talents today! God bless SRV! We could sure use a gentle, sweet, kind soul like his in our time now!!! 🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇🎸🎸🎸

His playing here is absolutely out of this world. Like mayer said "stevie fought to overcome the demons of drug and alcohol addiction, and when he did, he returned to the stage an even better guitar player for it"

Miss D. I love the way you feel about Stevie. You can tell the sincerity in your eyes when you speak positive things about him, which is why I love your Stevie reviews! And yes, I also love it when he makes direct eye contact into the camera, and, into our souls. Thanks again. :)

Yes, @Mosaic Rose! I don't see it that often, but the eye contact here definitely made me blush!🥰 I do have mad respect for him, and I don't like hearing critics say dumb stuff. Hope you're doing well...Happy 4th!😁

When someone goes through the mill like Stevie Ray did, when you come out the "other side", you want to celebrate it. I've always loved his style, his singing and of course his abilities on guitar. When you watch the concert videos after Stevie came out of addiction, he appears to exhibit genuine happiness. He's clear eyed and his guitar playing, believe it or not, improved. Maybe it's the new lease on life. I don't know, but if he wanted to sing about his experiences, I say, have at it. I enjoy everything this man had to offer. What a master he was.

Nice review. Before my son, now 25, was 2 years old he would imitate SRV. Family members couldn't believe that I didn't name him Stevie Ray. Playing behind his head with a toy guitar like SRV would do on Love Struck. You gotta take the hat off first, hang it on the mic stand & then put it up there on your neck. Then back down & put the hat back on! Then doing the same with the toy guitar playing behind his back the way SRV did during Texas Flood. BUT THIS SONG, around the same age, on his own, my son would sing the rhythm guitar part as "yeah-yeah." It's the guitar part after every phrase. Try it. Freaked the hell out me to hear this little 2 year olds voice coming from the back seat of my truck singing the guitar part in time. This man's music struck our souls is what I'm getting at. I told that to the bassist Tommy Shannon when I met him at the video store that I worked at during the time mid-'89, that they recorded "IN STEP." I told him, "Tommy not a day goes by that I don't listen to y'all. Understand that y'alls music shaped my life." I'm so blessed that I experienced SRV & DT first hand at several live shows and all the albums. Lastly, I have it so bad that the ringtone on my cell when my son calls me is the opening of Voodoo Chile from the '83 Austin City Limits show. And "Mama Said," is the ringtone when my mother calls me.

D - love your SRV reactions- it is so sad to me that even when Stevie was wasted, he could play the hell out of his guitar (live at the elMocambo) When he got clean(1986-1990) he was afraid he could not play as well- his playing actually got better and he was having fun- when he got rid of his demons, he was healthy, happy, in love with his girlfriend, life was good - and then he was taken from us

Thank you for sharing! It's truly sad that he was on track, and then he was taken away. I'm convinced he was an angel, just meant to give us joy for a short time. Luckily through recordings and books and other media, those of us who didn't experience him in life can do so now.

I was just reading about SRV's method of repairing the quarter-inch deep holes he used to wear into the fingers of his left hand -- talk about gross! I loved his singing voice, too, and a long time ago, I expected his speaking voice would be all weird and intimidating. But being born and raised in the Texas Panhandle, when I first heard Stevie being interviewed, he sounded like the guy next door -- very soothing and familiar. He seemed like a really nice person.

"Ex-addict jargon" is what my alcoholic sister used to call "recovery rhetoric" -- "being in denial," "making amends" and other limp, damp 12-stepologies. SRV might be the only person on Earth to derive such badassery from that lame lexicon. "Tightrope" and "Wall of Denial" are my favorite songs by him.
