Regal has forgotten more than Goldberg knows! Regal has been wrestling since he was around 13 years old and started at the bottom and worked his way to the top paying his dues along the way. He is most definitely due a place in the HOF in the near future. His podcast with Austin is a joy to listen to and I highly recommend it.

I think Regal being interviewed by Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot is the best one ever. Kevin asked him with some of his favourite bands growing up were. Being from England William Regal said Slade. Kevin piped up "oh yeah, I made those guys a lot of money" Regal immediately realize who he was and ask him "don't you think it's the other way around?" Kevin Dubrow asked him "what do you mean?" Regal looked him in the eye and said: " well, the only two hits you had were both Slade songs. SLADE wrote them, so I have to think it was THEM that they made YOU money!" Dubrow got all pissed off "you don't have to be like that" to which Regal replied: with a Stranglehold and started choking out the singer for Quiet Riot right there in the radio Studio. That didn't help him keep his job either

I saw Booker T and Sharmell in the gym on the Jericho cruise. Fans were generally respectful of the wrestlers, and we wouldn’t interrupt them during their workouts. A boy with Down Syndrome was in the gym, and asked me “Is that Booker T?” I smiled and said, “I think it is Booker T, young man.” Booker then stopped his workout, and talked to the kid for a couple minutes. Booker and Sharmell are intense in the gym, and still look like they’re in amazing shape.

Look at the other people that Goldberg was PUT IN THE SCRIPT to beat,and they did what they were told-barbarian and Meng come to mind immediately. He would have been up there with Flair had he been featured in the previous generation. He had it all for a classic heel: a punchable face, a dick attitude, real brawling skills, could work the coward angle, was great as a heel on the mic and was a technical wizard which could help him keep up with lenghthy matches against top babyfaces ala Flair. Too bad he was featured in an era where you have to look like Goldberg or talk like The Rock to be top game

Yep. Goldberg was just not a technical wrestler. Isolated power moves in a quick squash match - not a problem unless you can be safe and effective while selling moves - which he didn’t do at all. Well, to keep it factual, Regal was mistaken when he said that Quiet Riot's only two hits were Slade songs. They did have two hits, but their second biggest hit, "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)", a top-40 hit that barely missed the top-30 when it reached #31, was an original song by the band. I'm sure Regal is talking about Quiet Riot's 2nd Slade cover, "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". But that was not much of a hit, as it only reached #50.

After watching shoot interviews of Stevie Ray he seems like a no nonsense , down to earth kind of person. My late father loved wrestling and Harlem Heat was his all time favorite tag team. His favorite wrestling story to tell people how he got to meet Harlem Heat as a kid at a WCW show in the early 90's. He said Booker T and Stevie Ray were amazingly nice to him. Took the time to talk to him and took a picture with him. My mom still has that picture in a frame in her office.

I watched that match when it happened on TV and I watched over and over again on KZbin. What I saw was Regal teaching a young buck the facts of the business. He in no way "exposed" Goldberg. He eventually put Goldberg over in that match. If anything William Regal taught Goldberg how to wrestle a little bit better. I watched a podcast with Goldberg as he thanked William Regal for the lesson. In my opinion it made Goldberg's win even more legit.

Apparently backstage wanted Regal to give Goldberg his first "legitimate" test in the ring and both men were on board. Then right before the match began, unbeknownst to Regal, some higher-up told Goldberg "you better squash this guy or you'll lose your credibility". Classic WCW miscommunication led to an awkward match that ultimately did expose Goldberg and whether or not Regal was fired for that or for his drug issues is up for debate.
@revans100591
@revans100591 6 жыл бұрын
He was fired for embarrassing Goldberg on TV him being on drugs was the excuse they used to justify it. Regal admitted that in a shoot interview that and the fact that hours before the match happened they did a run thru of what was going to happen and when it came time to do it Goldberg went completely off script no selling his moves so Regal said to hell with it and embarrassed him in the ring. To answer who told Goldberg to squash him it was either the head booker (can't remember who was the booker at the time) or Bischoff my guess Bischoff since he was high on Goldberg squashing everybody during that point of his streak.

Regal comes from a serious wrestling background, far tougher than Americans are used to. He was trained by people with more moves than are typical in US wrestling. That was British wrestling in the 70s and 80s; genuinely technical. Think Dynamite Kid and Rollerball Mark Rocco. Plus Regal is tough anyway....

I like the match. The 'Kicking everybody's ass' thing shouldn't be so black and white in wrestling. A guy who's a monster getting in there with a supreme technician should look like the Regal/Goldberg match. The commentators should be told to non-stop highlight the fact that grapplers can HALT a monster by taking away so much of their offence through techniques. The monster winning at the end should be sold as a huge deal because not even great technique could hold their power for long.

Nonsense. Goldberg was becoming the typical squash-monster. I get that monsters generate hype, but there's only so much of "Big monster smashes puny mortal" before it gets stale, then when matches like Berg v Brock came along, it was an utter disaster. The Regal/Berg match in question may have played up on Bergs weaknesses, but it still made him look good. He actually squashed someone who put up a fight for a change, and Regal got to maintain a little dignity despite knowing it was typical 'jobbing'. From Regal's PoV, he was TOLD to 'wrestle' him - and then told off by the exact same people afterwards.

that's the point man. that's what *should have happened* and that's what *did happen*, yet Eric went berserk that the match took that long and made Goldberg look weak. And magically, Regal was fired shortly there after. Regal's side of the story is he was told by the agent to have a 'competitve' match. Goldberg, who hadn't had a match longer than 45 seconds at that point, claims that Regal intentionally made him look weak and dragged out the match to 5minutes exactly.

I have always put Regal in my top 3. Since I started watching in like 95 at the age of three. Everyone my age hated him when I got a little older too, but I always found his matches fascinating. He is the truest professional wrestler in every sense, and it translates into his work. When he break the rules, it’s amazing, but when he makes another turn and does something face-like, it’s even better.

I dunno if you'd call it "embarrassing" Goldberg. Goldberg still sold all Regals moves, and it was one of the most interesting matches Goldberg was ever in. If you don't sell that "technical" stuff, then nothing happens. None of those locks or takedowns actually work without cooperation. He coulda pulled a no-sell any time he wanted, since that was part of his character anyways. He was maybe a bit naive to let Regal have as much heat in the match as he had, but part of Goldberg's whole storyline was that he didn't necessarily have a lot of technical ability when it came to holds and locks. The character woulda been boring as Hell if people had sold submissions and holds for him too.

Regal is a legit legend. If he’s not in the WWE Hall Of Fame he damn well should be. But he also broke the golden rule. He broke kayfab. He was the veteran in that ring. He damn well knew better. His pride got in the way of his commitment to putting on a good show. He was tasked with putting over Goldberg. It wasn't his place to decide to embarrass the golden boy just because he got pissy about it. I would have fired him too. As I said, the man is a legend but he fucked up bad. He deservd to be fired.
