Kevin piped up "oh yeah, I made those guys a lot of money" Regal immediately realize who he was and ask him "don't you think it's the other way around?" Kevin Dubrow asked him "what do you mean?" Regal looked him in the eye and said: " well, the only two hits you had were both Slade songs. SLADE wrote them, so I have to think it was THEM that they made YOU money!" Dubrow got all pissed off "you don't have to be like that" to which Regal replied: with a Stranglehold and started choking out the singer for Quiet Riot right there in the radio Studio. Well, to keep it factual, Regal was mistaken when he said that Quiet Riot's only two hits were Slade songs. They did have two hits, but their second biggest hit, "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)", a top-40 hit that barely missed the top-30 when it reached #31, was an original song by the band. I'm sure Regal is talking about Quiet Riot's 2nd Slade cover, "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". But that was not much of a hit, as it only reached #50.

Apparently backstage wanted Regal to give Goldberg his first "legitimate" test in the ring and both men were on board. Then right before the match began, unbeknownst to Regal, some higher-up told Goldberg "you better squash this guy or you'll lose your credibility". Classic WCW miscommunication led to an awkward match that ultimately did expose Goldberg and whether or not Regal was fired for that or for his drug issues is up for debate.
@revans1005916 жыл бұрын
He was fired for embarrassing Goldberg on TV him being on drugs was the excuse they used to justify it. Regal admitted that in a shoot interview that and the fact that hours before the match happened they did a run thru of what was going to happen and when it came time to do it Goldberg went completely off script no selling his moves so Regal said to hell with it and embarrassed him in the ring. To answer who told Goldberg to squash him it was either the head booker (can't remember who was the booker at the time) or Bischoff my guess Bischoff since he was high on Goldberg squashing everybody during that point of his streak.

I like the match. The 'Kicking everybody's ass' thing shouldn't be so black and white in wrestling. A guy who's a monster getting in there with a supreme technician should look like the Regal/Goldberg match. The commentators should be told to non-stop highlight the fact that grapplers can HALT a monster by taking away so much of their offence through techniques. The monster winning at the end should be sold as a huge deal because not even great technique could hold their power for long.
I never felt lume it was a bad showing for Goldberg it was just a good showing for Regal.
@RopeDrink6 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Goldberg was becoming the typical squash-monster. I get that monsters generate hype, but there's only so much of "Big monster smashes puny mortal" before it gets stale, then when matches like Berg v Brock came along, it was an utter disaster. The Regal/Berg match in question may have played up on Bergs weaknesses, but it still made him look good. He actually squashed someone who put up a fight for a change, and Regal got to maintain a little dignity despite knowing it was typical 'jobbing'. From Regal's PoV, he was TOLD to 'wrestle' him - and then told off by the exact same people afterwards.

@@DrMurdercock so if someone will counter a move you will actually not consider it a wrestling move... And regal was trying to be a Olympic wrestler,pro wrestling is not only grappling everyone has different style Look at current stars roman reigns,seth Rollins and finn balor They do slam their opponents through mat which Goldberg also did Rollins and balor are somewhat high flyers so they do that also but pro wrestling doesn't involve proper wrestling especially grappling If you wanna watch grappling then watch Olympics or Indian dangal I know regal was a better grappler because his roots belongs to that But Goldberg was a better striker, power wrestler

Harlem Heat in my opinion is the greatest tag team of all time. They were Big, Scary, awesome entrance music, full of passion and excitement, and most of all; they had the skills to pay the bills and knew how to tear the house down. The total package!

I think the story is bigger then the match actually was. As I seen it live, and I've rewatched it a few times since then. The match wasn't bad and it didn't make Goldberg look bad either. He was a hot rookie who hadn't lost and regal was legit. Goldberg heald his own against him and in the end he obviously learned from it. And both came off looking good.

that's the point man. that's what *should have happened* and that's what *did happen*, yet Eric went berserk that the match took that long and made Goldberg look weak. And magically, Regal was fired shortly there after. Regal's side of the story is he was told by the agent to have a 'competitve' match. Goldberg, who hadn't had a match longer than 45 seconds at that point, claims that Regal intentionally made him look weak and dragged out the match to 5minutes exactly.

It was not William Regal's idea to go 6 minutes with Bill Goldberg who only knew enough moves to carry about a 90 second match.

I have always put Regal in my top 3. Since I started watching in like 95 at the age of three. Everyone my age hated him when I got a little older too, but I always found his matches fascinating. He is the truest professional wrestler in every sense, and it translates into his work. When he break the rules, it’s amazing, but when he makes another turn and does something face-like, it’s even better.

I dunno if you'd call it "embarrassing" Goldberg. Goldberg still sold all Regals moves, and it was one of the most interesting matches Goldberg was ever in. If you don't sell that "technical" stuff, then nothing happens. None of those locks or takedowns actually work without cooperation. He coulda pulled a no-sell any time he wanted, since that was part of his character anyways. He was maybe a bit naive to let Regal have as much heat in the match as he had, but part of Goldberg's whole storyline was that he didn't necessarily have a lot of technical ability when it came to holds and locks. The character woulda been boring as Hell if people had sold submissions and holds for him too.

I watched that match many times and saw a competitive match. I didn't see Regal embarrass Goldberg. I saw a good match between a awesome legend in William Regal and a awesome newcomer Bill Goldberg. I thought it was a great match. No Goldberg didn't come out and destroy Regal in 30 seconds and I didn't expect that to happen. I thoroughly enjoyed the match. It taught Goldberg a lot in the wrestling ring and I loved it.

Also tell them this every time regal threw punches at goldberg, goldberg shok it off.... every time regal had him in a tangle hold goldberg had a counter...REGAL PLAN WAS TO TANGLE UP GOLDBERG AND HAVE HIM OFF RHYTHM he's use to win when he squash a opponent ... question did you see regal pick up goldberg and throw him around ? NO did you see goldberg throw him around before he hit him with a spear ? YES. .... u see regal surprised goldberg by hitting him but not damaging him cause goldberg shook it off and he tangled his arms..... but goldberg said ok this is different... imma flow along with it ,EVERY MOVE REGAL DID GOLDBERG COUNTERED... THEN HIT EM WITH THE SPEAR...THE END 😂😂😂❤

Regal is a legit legend. If he’s not in the WWE Hall Of Fame he damn well should be. But he also broke the golden rule. He broke kayfab. He was the veteran in that ring. He damn well knew better. His pride got in the way of his commitment to putting on a good show. He was tasked with putting over Goldberg. It wasn't his place to decide to embarrass the golden boy just because he got pissy about it. I would have fired him too. As I said, the man is a legend but he fucked up bad. He deservd to be fired.

Regal exposed a lot of wrestlers. He had great skill compared to others. The others were just for their physique and the odd occasion whereby they'd exhibit great strength. Promoters wanted action men, not a brit who could dance around the rest of them.
