After all of this unimportant nonsense about P.J.'s hair I have to state one thing: P.J.Proby is the obvious,one & only hair apparent to the King!! Thanks for all the "plugs" guys & giving P.J. all of this attention.Know y'all love him really!!!

The interviewer surely had tongue planted firmly in cheek when encouraging Proby to tell his "Elvis Was a Stupid Hick" story. Proby can't accept that Elvis is still the King of Rock 'n' Roll and he's only a legendary pants splitter who's never known what to do with a song without someone to mimic. Given first dibs on Delilah, he was at a loss and turned it into a joke. Then Tom Jones took it and the rest as they say is history. So it's no surprise Proby claims Tom's manager was seen bribing the Cilla/PJ 1965 Tour promoter Joe Collins to drop Proby and hire Tom. Problem with his story is that Collins wasn't the promoter on that tour! hahaha Proby can't get anything right.

@bentherefirst Private conversations are precisely that! Just like to add that Proby wasn't called Proby at the time he was in contact with Elvis in the early days! he was simply Jimmy Smith!

Elvis never wiped his mouth on the table cloth either because if you know anything about him he was very, very picky at the dinner table and he also had impeccable manners.

@rontenn So now you say Proby remembers it but not very clearly? Jerry said in his book that Elvis sent a note to the stage asking Proby to sing "Somewhere" again. Proby sat down on the stage and told the crowd that the request from Elvis was "the biggest honor I could ever hope for". What does Proby do when he's in awe of somebody, faint?

@JudicialError. About the "One Night With Elvis" show. It stars PJ & Lee Memphis King. 40 UK dates & it started last Thursday in Manchester. Lee is the Vegas Elvis & dresses accordingly. PJ is onstage over one hour & does a lot of early Elvis songs & also talks about his El connection. Fantastic 16 track CD on sale of his act & also a recently discovered 1963 Proby demo for Elvis written by Ben Weisman "I'll keep Your Secret" & now on CD. Elvis turned it down cos it was too difficult for him!

@brown601trail An autobiography is written by the person himself. The story about P.J. on his web page is a biography so P.J. did not write it.Obviously he gave tips & facts to the author but not on everything. Where did you get the spelling Bettye? Some of the things you write are not even mentioned on the official web site "Life Story". As for the Lamar High School yearbook I doubt if P.J. has ever seen one,finding one would be impossible these days I'm sure.

I think Bailey Ritz is a special interviewer. On another clip he interviews Joe Longthorne & also does a good job. Incidentally Joe has some great things to say about P.J.

PJ Proby said in a 2006 audio interview that he was managed by Parker before Elvis was. He said he first met Elvis at the Hitching Post after Parker signed him (Elvis) and that Tommy Sands, Elvis and Proby sang there together. In a 2012 interview Proby said this was in the summer of '53 before Elvis started his "career". In the summer of 1953 Tom Parker had no interest in a Memphis assembly worker named Elvis Presley and they weren't even introduced until 1955. PJ Proby is full of crap.

@ItsaLostArt Betty was asked for a few sentences to add to the sleeve notes,NOT her life story! She was actually dating Tommy & Elvis at the same time & step-bro P.J. was the middle man helping to keep both El & Tommy in the dark about the other guy!!
@rontenn

@bentherefirst I found the song you could not be bothered to give a title to.It's "I'll Keep Your Secret". I personally do not believe it was written as an Elvis movie song.It WAS written for Elvis tho'. Nowhere in the Ebay description was the west coast mentioned! Plus P.J. says "IF my memory serves me right". Which means he's not 100% sure if Swan was on the record or not. He's being honest!

I have connections with P.J.'s family & all that he says happened is backed up by them....uncles,aunts,cousins etc.One cousin even remembers Elvis,P.J. & Tommy jamming together at Betty & P.J.'s parents house in Houston.! The cousin,Johnny Foster was about 7 at the time. Betty Moers is mentioned in the sleeve notes of a Tommy Sands CD "The Worrying Kind"

@jgjman The PONY TAIL was false to start off with in April 1964. brown601trail was referring to the mid 90's period where from about '95 to '99 PJ was dyeing his hair & also improving the volume in other ways at the front. Proby was camp for a reason, as we all know it was to appeal to the young girl audience & he did! Pulling his tongue out & doing strange gestures made him unique. Which hairdresser of Proby's are you referring to from the mid 60's? Barry Benson passed away a few years ago.

@rontenn Nobody's talking about remembering birthdays. Proby has said Betty was 2 years older than him, the most popular girl at Lamar High School and he was madly in love with her. He just made a wild guess about her age and didn't notice she was a year behind him in school? If he didn't see much of her why did he write that story in his autobiography about listening to her and Elvis in the bedroom next to his for three months. He didn't see her because she never came out of her bedroom?

@grizzlygalore My mistake!! In 2003 it was NOT the booze talking! Probably P.J. getting a little confused just like plenty of people do here on You Tube. Sometimes in an interview the questions come thick & fast & dates & times get blurred. Plenty of bad things done by Elvis....remember that girl he speared in the chest with a pool cue? Just like P.J. he was no saint!

@cbatalk P.J. has never denied it!!! This is a fact! I know P.J. very, very well! It's 47 years ago & that makes things a bit hazy especially if he had guzzled a few beers at the time! Memory's can sometimes be very strange....I remember my first day at school when I was 5 in 1952. Yet some things that happened much,much later than that are difficult to recall. You must know the feeling! A member of his staff!!???? LOL!
@rontenn

@jgjman I believe what you say. Elvis did throw plenty of wobblers I just never knew P.J. had ever said he was there when the snooker cue went-a- flying!! Did he say what year it occurred?

@grizzlygalore So Bobby Vee did not release "I Will". Does not mean he never recorded it. As for P.J. thinking Bobby was older than him well I can understand him making that mistake.

PJ Proby's web bio says he's the son of a Houston banker and he attended private military schools in Texas and Illinois. He says in the video that people in Houston only use Irish linen tablecloths and napkins on special occasions. Then he tells a ridiculous story about Elvis that can't be backed up by anybody anywhere. What's his motive? For some sick reason Proby must be on a vendetta against Houstonians and Elvis Presley. May the bird of paradise fly up his!!

@rontenn You said on that Austin clip that Elvis' guys weren't along and didn't know about Proby going to nightclubs with Elvis. Now you're hinting on this clip that one of the guys knew about it. Maybe you had one private conversation with Jerry Schilling but I don't think you'll be having another one. He's not going to like it when he finds out you're using his name on the internet to lend credence to P.J. Proby's stories.
@rangermission

@rontenn If Proby wasn't drunk in that 1980 Hamburg interview what's your explanation for him saying he did demos for Elvis for 10 years before Kid Galahad and when he was 13 he and Elvis were singing together. Elvis would have been 16. Where were they singing together in 1951 or 1952?

@brown601trail The books that state the facts are U.S. publications not from England.As for Scotty Moore's memory....it could be very poor! Proby got pissed off eventually about being asked about Presley when he first arrived in England in '64.It was the press that kept on bringing up the subject,not P.J.

@rangermission I did not use the words you are quoting.I did say a lot of P.J.'s older family have passed away but there are still plenty left. Actually Betty is the only family member who no-one seems to know where she is these days. So if Betty is "running her mouth about it" then you know more than anyone! I'm going on info that the rest of the surviving Smith & Moers families know.

@rontenn So Proby went to Lamar High for a year and found out she was the most popular girl there but it wasn't long enough to decipher she was younger than him. A little slow wasn't he? Had he flunked so many grades by then he was 2 years behind her instead of 1 year ahead?
@rontenn

@CategoryStomper. Elvis was a magnificent singer.His actual real life character was very ordinary & his opinions on things he kept "neutral", he was afraid to make them public! P.J. isn't afraid of anything!

@brown601trail Proby has never said he demoed any Elvis hits...just songs!!! Putting words into his mouth again are we? YES! P.J. was an Elvis demo man.....no-one ever said or wrote he was THE only demo man. P.J. also demoed for Johnny Burnette, Bobby Vee & many,many others including some black stars.He was sooooo versatile & still is.His demo's were usually better than the finished article! Go see him him in Liverpool in October .

@virtualpager Proby is a talented musician.He plays drums,guitar,harmonica & piano.Sometime in 2012 there will be a special page added to his web site photo gallery.PJ wants me to sort out all of the pics of him with other famous stars from the music/film world. I'll be doing that. When he was an unknown he obviously didn't get his name on any show tickets.I've got plenty of tickets & flyers from when he was top of the bill....Mr. P.J.Proby.One of them has The Bee Gees as bottom of the bill.

Music critic Henry Pleasants observes Elvis Presley has been described variously as a baritone and tenor. Identifying Presley as a high baritone variable and unpredictable at the bottom and often brilliant at the top w/ the capacity for full voiced high Gs and As that an opera baritone might envy with an upward extension in falsetto to at a minimum D flat. Elvis sang falsetto excently in many songs unike Bailey Ritz said in a private comment to me;-)

@virtualpager As far as I can make out Proby only attended Lamar High for one year. He only saw Betty in school holidays & most of the time they attended different schools. Proby was in military schools. When he was home in Houston is when he saw....& heard her!!!

What a life P.J. has had!! O.K. Elvis sold a lot more records but his life story is nothing compared to P.J.'s. Elvis was controversial right at the start when he did a bit of leg wiggling! That soon died down & after that he kept his nose clean & sadly ended up on drugs.He went out with a whimper.....in 2010 P.J. is still getting bitter reaction from some people.It all stems from their envy!!! P.J. is actually the Real King!
@rontenn
@rontenn 14 жыл бұрын
@jgjman I am so glad you still like the voice!!! Us fans really admire the way you got him singing again when he was down & out! BUT you are always going on & on about his bad character & it never ends.It's 20 years since "Thanks" I think you should consider backing off.Just listen to the music & put any other stuff to the back of your mind please! Make a New Years Resolution to do that. Most entertainers have dodgy characters & most are self obsessed! You knew PJ was "unusual" before "Thanks"!

@virtualpager Smith (Proby) & Tommy Sands attended Lamar High at the same time & were pals. Sands was a local child star & PJ also used to play the same venues as part of a C/W group. We all know who Parker managed,it's common knowledge he never managed Proby as he was too young! Proby is certain Elvis played all of the venues in Houston including the Hitching Post. I cannot find any record of this but it could have been an off the cuff performance. Who can prove that one way or the other?

@rontenn All Jerry's said was Elvis saw P.J. Proby perform at a club in Hollywood. I'm not calling him a liar but evidently P.J. Proby thinks he is. According to a member of his staff he's denied the Red Velvet incident happened ever since Jerry's book came out.

@rontenn Roy Rogers was very religious. He didn't allow drinking at his ranch or around his family and he didn't hire drinkers to tour with them. Proby's website says he started drinking at 14. He's admitted in interviews that he didn't hang around where he couldn't drink, even saying he never went back to Elvis' house after the one party when he was told not to bring beer back there. He must have forgotten about that when he told his RR ranch story.

@rontenn 6 months ago you posted on this video that the members of Proby's family who could confirm everything are all dead except Betty who's chosen to remain silent. Fast forward 6 months and Proby's sprouted a bunch of aunts, uncles and cousins with vivid memories of him and Elvis. It seems Silent Betty's running her mouth about it as well. It's easier to keep your stories straight when you tell the truth!

@newerversion Gary was talking in the year The Walker Bros got famous...in mid 1965.He was talking about having played drums for Jett Powers & Elvis. Jett Powers existed from 1958 until 1961. Gary gave no further details. So I guess any of those 4 years were also the years that he could have drummed for Elvis.Probably '60 or '61. So to you, Gary is like P.J, closely related to Pinocchio? LOL!

@brown601trail You've been getting so called extracts from PJ's autobiography from the official & unofficial sites,no-one knows if everything you have read is from PJ. himself. Proby fans did print it off but we're not sure it's 100% genuine In the class roll you are right,it is Bettye. It's very hazy even on the web site to see exactly when PJ left Lamar for Western Military. Also not mentioned is when Bettye graduated. Someone in the Smith or Moers family will have the yearbooks, who?
@cbatalk
@cbatalk 13 жыл бұрын
@rontenn I see on KZbin that PJ Proby played Elvis in a stage production, covered some Elvis records, and a '60s clip shows him saying he cut demos for some movies. Comparing the early stuff to this video he's gotten a lot bolder with his stories about close ties to Elvis. Does he tell Europeans pink Cadillacs with copper trim were so common in Houston that nobody would remember the one he says was parked at his house? I bet he didn't think about any East Texans ever seeing this interview.

@NoTopLoading The Hitching Post could possibly have been a place called "The Old Hitchin' Rack" or "The Trading Post" Club. Who knows? There must be plenty of clubs that were around in 1954 in the area but have since been demolished!

@grizzlygalore Whether he took Claudia from Sly or Jim, he took her & they became engaged.Plenty of stories & pics in the U.S. Teen magazines at that time & I have 'em all. P.J. was not meant to be a country star...he simply became later on a POP music superstar!! CHAPTER NOW DEFINITELY CLOSED!!!

@RocksNoChaser I know P.J.'s autobiography is genuine. I was talking about his story on the official Proby website....He did not write that! @brown601trail Maybe P.J. doesn't know the real name of the venue?? As you say, Elvis was not a superstar in 1954 but everyone knew he was on the way! Probably P.J. did not give that impression as he was just a kid!

@RocksNoChaser I don't recall seeing a web site with PJ calling his step sister a slutty groupie. Betty dated Elvis when he was in Houston for a week playing a series of gigs in about 1954. She also had earlier dated PJ.'s pal Tommy Sands but dating two guys doesn't make you slutty! PJ goes once a year to Texas to visit family & is always made welcome. He stays on his other step-sisters ranch as he loves horses. He also has a step brother who lives in Carolina who he's on great terms with.

@ItsaLostArt P.J. can say anything he wants to! he can say good things or bad things about anything or anyone he wants to. As theBESTelvis said P.J. was being straightforward & that's the way I like things. No bullshitting & false statements. You may not like what he said but that's too bad. So many showbiz people are afraid of saying the wrong thing & upsetting people who they may need later. P.J. just tells it like it is!

@grizzlygalore Parker signed Sands to RCA Records in '52. He did not personally manage him until later. When he eventually did sign for the Colonel, Tommy's Mother ripped up the contract.....she did not like him! When Elvis became big Parker did drop Sands. Perhaps Parker had vaguely promised Smith a contract too but changed his plans. Who knows? Keep an open mind & do not jump to the conclusion that Smith is twisting things. It's almost 60 years ago! Can you remember that far back every detail?

@jgjman Just checked the story from the details in the "Elvis,What Happened" book & the pool cue episode took place in 1963. Presley lost his temper (once again!) & really injured a young lady who had said something to anger him. It did not happen in Memphis but in Bel Air,Hollywood,...Belagio Road. So it is possible P.J. was there & that you or him got the venue mixed up. Some weird things about E.P. in that book!

@rontenn Talking a bit jumbled was he? Elvis recorded the songs for Kid Galahad in Oct 1961 so Proby was talking about doing Elvis demos as early as 1951. @jgjman I've seen PJ.'s collection of pistols,rifles,knives etc. He may have held a knife to your throat, well he actually chased me round his back yard with a gun in the mid 90's. Loaded? I didn't bother to ask! I was off! Your contribution to the 70th birthday book is there because of me. Didn't bother to ask P.J.'s permission as I know it would have been "NO!" You have a genuine grievance with P.J. but the other creeps on here & on other Proby clips criticising him are purposely hateful.

@brown601trail P.J. did write that song with Dotty Harmony & 2 others.Elvis loved it but when he heard Proby helped write it & also sang it he would not record it. He & Proby had both dated Dotty There are 1000's of Elvis fans who are convinced it is Elvis singing. That's because it's a perfect E.P. imitation. Plenty of Proby fans believe Elvis did not record it because it was too difficult for him! Rick Nelson managed it...just!

@metrozapjoe Thank you for confirming everything PJ is claiming is true!!. P.J. will even confirm he was a big drinker. Elvis had given up his day job a few months before August '54.He was all over Tennessee & Texas at that time doing gruelling gigs! He officially quit Crown Electrics in Nov. '54 but he hadn't been there for ages anyway. The PINK Cadillac was purchased in Nov. '54 according to "The Elvis Encyclopedia. PJ's friend Lamar Fike (RIP) confirms this. No problem!

@nawlins4evah Proby has been a special guest on a few shows that's no secret!! He has also been on lots of other shows top of the bill or second on the bill! He does not mind & neither do his fans. The reason ? Whoever is on the same stage that night will get his butt kicked !!!! No-one around has got the voice or the charisma of P.J. That's a FACT!!!!

@rangermission I've taken a look at my comments.It's obvious to anyone with any sense that I meant "close" family. Mom,Dad, Uncles & Aunts. In other words older family. Anyway this was 6 months ago, I've since found out that P.J. has plenty of other family members still out there & they have confirmed the facts. A lot can happen in 6 months! I know in that time your brain has gone down hill!

@virtualpager I've never read about the venues or dates of the gigs that P.J. played in the backing group of Roy Rogers. No use me asking P.J. He'll remember roughly the year but I doubt if every town or city will still be in his memory. He could have been simply Jimmy Smith when the tour took place or he maybe was then Jett Powers getting not much work so deciding to earn a few bucks by backing R.R.

@rangermission I said that "He obviously did not do all 11"....are you blind? Two of those by P.J. have been found in the last 8 years.Others are out there somewhere.Obviously no-one knows which songs were done by who & when but naturally when they are found the details follow. What I wrote are the facts so far! The fact that Ben did not say which of his singers did what songs is what is making the demo's so hard to find. There are also demo's out there submitted by Ben which were not used.

@ReplayPusher. Fisher is famous for being a good singer, he also starred in a few films.Not a superstar! If you said Debbie & Liz to anyone under 50 they would have no idea about who you were talking about. I stick to my guns,a singer is remembered for his/her voice! Amy Whitehouse only had a short career,most of it was on drugs & drink! Her voice was fantastic but she threw it all away! PJ has been singing professionally for 53 years! He's still with us,that must be hard for you to take!

@nawlins4evah He didn't bring the subject up....Bailey Ritz did! By the way listen to the interview....Elvis wiped his mouth on the TABLECLOTH. A tablecloth is not a napkin. You wipe your mouth on the napkin or as we say here a serviette. A bumpkin would use the tablecloth as that's what he would do at home too!

@grizzlygalore I didn't forget anything!! I'm always 100% honest & so I admit this is the first time I've heard that P.J. was supposedly present when the cue pierced the gals breast. I'll check out what year it happened from Red's "revenge" book. P.J. always said he never visited Graceland,did this incident happen there?

@chris7231000 Who said anything about P.J. going to El's house? I said Lamar confirmed that the November 1954 Cadillac was pink, as P.J. also said. The Cadillac was at P.J.'s Houston home when he was dating Betty Moers,P.J.'s half sister!

@metrozapjoe Ernst is clever enough to pick the right one. I've just read on one Elvis site that Ernst said P.J.'s "Slowly but Surely" is superior to El's. I & many others agree!

Minnie Pearl was unique!! So is P.J.Proby !!! He is telling everything what happened in his life!! Why would he say Minnie Pearl when he could easily have name dropped even bigger lady country singers/stars if he was lying & just wanting to impress. If he said it was Minnie it WAS Minnie!!! Chapter closed!!!!

@metrozapjoe Ben Weisman could offer his songs to anyone he wanted to!! They were all fantastic songs & so the top singers wanted them. That does not mean to say that they made the best versions....but they did make BIG BUCKS for the song writers which is what it was all about. Every song Proby has ever recorded, including demo's, is always better than any other version ever done by anyone else! That's why they are "SUPERIOR" !

@jaymrks As usual & like all anti Proby people it's YOU with the facts all wrong! PJ never mentioned anything about Elvis in Texas in 1954/55 until years after he himself made it big. He did talk in 1964 about Elvis & the Dotty Harmony episode but only under pressure from the press.He even said in one interview "Elvis can go to hell!" he was so fed up about journalists asking him questions about Presley. It's NOT 55 years ago but 57 by the way since they both appeared at the Hitching Post.

@RocksNoChaser Sharon Sheeley only put in her book the nice things she knew about Elvis. Believe me she also knew all of the negatives about E.P. but maybe the publishers didn't want it in the book or she never wrote about the bad Elvis facts she had experienced in the first place. As for Proby's naive attitude towards certain things I call it happy go lucky!! A true individual!

@ItsaLostArt I said plenty of singers trashed other singers not just those in the 60's! There were hundred's but I'll give you the names of a few.Dean Martin,Frank Sinatra,Elton John,Jerry Lee Lewis..the list is endless!

@JudicialError Threatening to do something is not the same as actually doing it!! The CD "Thanks" was a good one & sold quite well I believe. Plenty of promotional interviews on mainly Northern U.K. television. As I said in another reply the guy knew all about P.J.'s awkward character,nobody forced him to sign up Proby. We're only hearing one side of the story by the way!

@nawlins4evah Sounds like Bobby is losing his memory as well as his hair!! It does not mean there was no demo just because Bobby never heard it. They were probably too afraid to play it to him as his little teen voice was no match for Proby's. If Ben says there was a demo disc then believe it!!

@rangermission I'm sober so read the facts about the Elvis demo's. I've written them to help people who are not sure which films P.J. did demo's for.Even P.J. got confused in some interviews thanks to a few glasses of Jack Daniels. Some weirdo's won't believe a word I write but most people will be pleased to know the truth. To the weirdo's I say like it or lump it! Who cares?

@prv60town I browsed thru' the rest of the book many years ago.I can vaguely remember what you are droning on about! I only purchased the book for the chapter on P.J. He calls P.J. a genius & that he could outclass Frank Sinatra.Cohn also says he was magnificent onstage.....in fact Proby got the best write-up in the whole book. I can distinguish between good & bad,praise & criticism You don't seem to be able to! LOL!
