Stevie had a diverse selection of songs to critique and there were some pleasant surprises. It’s always nice to hear The Left Banke get a mention and Jimi’s song isn’t one I’ve heard often. Remarkably, at 17 years of age, Stevie already had several Hits to his name! Another fascinating flashback YP and your “King Midas In Reverse” arrangement is terrific! Thank you kindly.

The Left Banke is criminally undiscussed nowadays, but a huge reminder of their influence can be heard in “More Than a Feeling” by Boston (which remains a huge part of classic rock radio, even nowadays.) Tom Scholz claims that The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee” was the main inspiration for “More Than a Feeling,” and you can definitely hear a nice nod to that in the lyric “I see my Marianne walkin’ away.”
@lindadote

@@TundieRice ……oh, The Left Banke was a woefully underrated/under-appreciated band imo, they were gifted young men with some excellent original songs. I’ve never been a Boston fan but know the song you cited and you’re absolutely right. I always thought The Left Banke was mighty unlucky to have the lovely “Walk Away Renee” covered by the Four Tops too because it was the Tops’ cover that enjoyed all the airplay and remains the one most people are familiar with.

SW was only 17 and had just had a hit a few months before with "I Was Made to Love Her" (recorded before his 17th birthday). He'd already been professional since age 10 or 11 and his incredible string of albums and hit songs in the '70s hadn't even begun yet. Incredible music and incredible musician/composer/arranger/singer. Still going strong now at 72 after over 60 years in the business, he still makes compelling and relevant music today, crossing over to work with jazz, hiphop, and rock artists with equal flair.
@mackb909

I disagree with him about "I Can See For Miles," though. What an incredible record. Townshend's ominous and crashing guitar chords, Entwistle's sinuous bass, Daltrey's insinuating voice, and Keith Moon's apocalyptic drumming- 56 years later that song has lost none of its power and crunch.
@TundieRice
@TundieRice Жыл бұрын
@@mackb909 For sure, I wonder what didn’t hit Stevie in that song. I mean, hell, it was the main inspiration for Paul McCartney when he wrote “Helter Skelter,” in an attempt to create a harder-rocking song than “I Can See for Miles and Miles (which I think they succeeded at, especially since many consider it to be the one of, if not the very first heavy metal songs.)

Stevie even confused Jerry Lee Lewis with Bobby Bland, which is odd, as he covered a Bobby Bland song, I Pity The Fool. But Jerry had changed his sound a bit by then, obviously to keep up with the change of times. But as soon as Stevie guessed who it was, he apparently said "Oh he's just released Great Balls Of Fire" which may have been a sarcastic implication it was the same. But Jerry was great back in the late fifties, despite the news exploding that he had married his 13 year old cousin. But by 1967, he was a bit past his sell-by date.
@Kieop
@Kieop Жыл бұрын
@@paulgoldstein2569 No, he says Great Balls of Fire in reaction to finding out it's Jerry Lee, like OMG! Then he says it's cool that he has a new record out. He's just expressing his surprise and making a play on Jerry's iconic hit. You may be right that there may be some sarcasm in it, but I don't think he's implying they're the same since they most obviously are not. They sound nothing alike, hence the difficulty in identification.

Maybe it's a case over romanticism but the 60's seemed to be a great period for music and liberating itself from the standards of the previous generation. Being born in '64 I wouldn't discover some of this music until the early 70's, and later. I was happy to hear that "Little" Stevie Wonder enjoyed Ode to Billy Joe. It's a good song. I love these Blind Dates. Some are better than others, some get a bit mean, but others are very insightful into the music of that period. I wish there were more from the 70's. How long did this go on for? I imagine that it stopped at some point. Egos are more brittle nowadays, both the musicians and the fans.

It's one of the songs recorded by Curtis Knight with Hendrix as session guitarist that were exploited by the producer/tape owner. That guy was some kind of vulture who scammed young musicians by making them sign contracts that gave him total control on the music, so when Hendrix became a smash, he took the opportunity to release those maybe three year old tapes as if they were a novelty. This guy was such a scoundtel that he even forced his father to make a record. According to the session engineer the poor old man (in fact very old) was not even aware of what was he doing there.

It wasn’t really a “Hendrix tune” per se, it was a song that Jimi recorded with Curtis Knight as a session guitarist, and that was released the same year as Are You Experienced. So Jimi had certainly released a lot of his own music by that point, especially since the Experience had released one single in 1966. Overall, Jimi probably didn’t have too much to do with the creative side of the Curtis Knight cuts besides his wonderful guitar skills (including some early wah-wah guitar.) But Jimi had definitely proven himself as a creative genius well before the Curtis Knight cuts came out.

The Hollies could have built on it and grown beyond their happy-poppy Top 40 hit-machine niche. But instead they bottled out when Midas wasn't the hoped-for major success. That seems to have been the catalyst for Graham Nash's departure the following year. A few years later, of course, they did finally grow up musically and start to put out some really worthy stuff.

Stevie had a great selection in front of him, and at only 17, he was almost spot on with his reviews, a great musical taste at such a young age, and not a duff track here, but a couple by great artists, but these were not their best. There were a couple he already knew, as they had already been hits in the States, but were just coming out over here, even though they were by British artists, Donovan and Eric Burdon. He was frank about the Percy Sledge, a great singer, but this was not one of his best. I think it was at this time, he was deteriorating, and everything was getting to sound like his first hit. BUT, he made a great second album the previous year, Warm And Tender Soul, as all the tracks on it were so different from each other, some of them, the types of songs he never recorded elsewhere. I even liked the Peter, Paul & Mary one, as this was at a time when they were shifting from acoustic Folk to a slightly more Psychedelic sound, and Stevie rather liked it. As for The Who, I wasn't surprised that Stevie was unfamiliar with them as they had so far not cracked it in the States, but this was the very one that changed all that, and very suddenly got them huge in the States, resulting in them touring there during late 1967, and recording some of their next album there. But I think what also helped was their then-recent appearance at Monterey Pop Festival, where they caused a HUGE stir, performing all their classic UK hits in front of an American audience who had never previously heard of any of them, but it made the American music fans belatedly realize how good they were, as the festival was heavily broadcasted. But Eric Burdon who was still a popular figure in the States, put in a good word for them when introducing them on stage, stating that they were huge in England and everywhere overseas, but had not yet cracked it in the States. BUT ALL THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE, he said, which obviously moistened the appetites of the American music fans. He was right. But previous to 1967, only My Generation touched the U.S. Top 100, peaking at a disappointing number 76, despite it being number 2 in the UK. But in early 1967, Happy Jack belatedly reached number 24 in the States. I wasn't surprised that Stevie confused their sound with Paul Revere And The Raiders, as I began to think it sounded a bit like them, and he obviously wasn't yet familiar with The who. Good to see The Dubliners in the UK charts of this week in 1967, plus Vince Hill's Psychedelic reading of Love Letters In The Sand. Let's have these Blind Date videos more frequently.

I much prefer the B sides to both Donovan's and Eric's singles; the very insightful "Good Times' (imho one of the best lyrics of the 60's) and Donovan's melodic and very beautiful "Sand and Foam", also lyrically wonderful.

@@SuperNevile Sand And Foam I have on the double CD reissue of Donovan's Sunshine Superman album among the heap of bonus tracks, well worth having. But I still like the A side. Eric Burdon; Good Times was on the B side of the U.S. only issue of San Franciscan Nights. In the UK, they were on separate singles. Gratefully Dead was the B side of the UK release, an uptempo Jimi Hendrix inspired rocker. But the UK B side of Good Times was a surprisingly good uptempo rocker, Ain't That So.

Funny the Stevie Wonder comments about the San Francisco scene. Sounds like he'd heard George Harrison's take when he (George) visited the Haight and reported it to be a pretty seedy affair with a lot of "sketchy people" and nothing like Carnaby Street. This was really interesting. Guess Stevie didn't like stone cold rave-ups cause he sure dismissed one of the all time great rockers right off the bat. I thought nobody could ever not like that one, but live and learn, eh? "Oh cut if off. San Francisco isn't all it's built up to be....but I like Los Angeles better than Frisco. It's an hour away by air." Didn't Stevie know that Los Angeles is the phony capital of the world? It was once described to me like this--you know how every city has its backstabbers, but in LA they backstab you and then continuously turn the knife for years. ..lol.... but .what do I know? I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. Stevie comes across as a really nice person which I'm sure he is... YP thanks for this and love your outro.. That was King Midas In Reverse. no? ..
