One day when I was a young boy, I sat on the steps of our tenement building in Brooklyn waiting for my mom to return from work out on Long Island. After a while, I realized she was running late and must be due to train delays. I looked in the fridge and saw she had set out some beef liver to cook for dinner so I took it upon myself to cook it. This would be the first thing I ever cooked and relied on what I learned from seeing my mom and grandmother do. Browned some sugar...it went a tad longer than it should and after adding the meat I tossed in sliced onions and covered it until done. Cooking the rice was easy. Mom got home about an hour after I finished cooking. and said...someone was busy‽ She took off her coat and boots and we sat down for dinner. Nope...it was just passable but as she was leaving the next morning, she said I defrosted some chicken...see what you can do with it. That was May, 1972 and I got better.
