My father served in 1981 as a non-commissioned officer in the 12th mountain division. That was a fusilier company. The recoil of the rifle grenade was around 80 kg. Broken fingers and broken noses were commonplace. Everyone, even smaller and lankier recruits, had to learn to use the infamous rifle grenade effectively in battle. You didn't always have time or space to open the winter trigger and, especially in trenches, you had to use different firing techniques than shown in the video. sometimes you had no choice but to shoot from the shoulder.

1'45" When I received the Stgw 57 in 1989, that was more ceremonial. You had to go to attention before the unit commander and he handed you your personal weapon over a Swiss flag. In 1991 we were then issued the (then) new Stgw 90 with the same ceremony. The Stgw 57 was really pleasant to shoot, especially as a light machine gun in full auto for suppressive fire. But the Stgw 90 was a whole different thing in terms of accuracy and weight.

when I received my Stwg the Company commander was this skinny weak University assistant, and I forgot to salute and just took the Stwg..but he didn't let go...so he was standing on a podest and I just pulled him down to my level since his strenght was no match to mine, then I remembered that I forgot to salute thats why he didn't let go of the Rifle...so I saluted took the rifle and left and he stood there dumbfounded, I got transferred to Staff Company as Recon (Nachrichtensoldat) and later heard that the whole company had refused an order (including NCO's) of this First Lieutenant( he did a Herbert Sobel= Band of Brothers which doesn't work in Swiss army)...he was so bad that for sure he never got to lead a Company... we on the other hand got an excellent Oberwalliser first lieutenant with charisma and leadership.

the 57 is an amazing tool to take someone's face off at a long distance, but the weight is just ridiculous, must be the heaviest post war battle rifle there is, and the longest. Like they never expected anyone to walk further than from their house to a truck and from the truck to a bunker.

Thanks for another gem on the stg 57. Funny they where training on semi auto only. You can clearly see the white patch on receiver's side. Prob to avoid stupid things from the recruits.

Really interesting to hear them call the lever a "winter trigger". It was my understanding that the developer intended for the lever to be used when firing rifle grenades, as that added a fair bit of recoil.

I have the same problem sometimes with loading the magazine like the guy in this video. And its not just me. Everyone I handle the rifle to shoot have the same problem and sometimes, not everytime, struggle to put it in correctly. I dont know why. You may think its just like in a AK but it wont get in so easly.

If you try to put the mag in like into an AK you are probably at too shallow an angle. The locking lug in a Stgw.57 sits much higher in the gun than with an AK. Remember to have the magazine angled way forward (45° or so), jam it up as far as it will go and then rock back. Otherwise you will get the ledge on the magazine below the locking lug and it will fall out.

In Switzerland shooting is still a tradition, a lot of people are doing it (even not in the army) and a lot of people still use this rifle (I do) and some use also older rifle 😊

Out of curiosity, Mr. Dale, how often do you encounter the Italian-speaking Swiss in your studies of the armed forces?

Objectively, only 8.2% of Swiss are Italian speakers, so they are definitely a linguistic minority. At the Federal Archives, I rarely, if not never encounter documents in Italian. Idem for Italian manuals, the print runs are usually quite small. Since I don’t speak the language, I’m not exactly seeking out this domain.

lots of recruits were Secondos and spoke Italian as their actual mother tonque but resided in a Swiss German or French canton so the percentage of Italian speakers in the 80's in Switzerland was closer to 20%, also some officers did a foreign Reserve course in another language which was well seen by High Command.

High quality aesthetics. I like alpanflage camo and I have both M70 jacket and TAZ 83 shirt. SInce I'm almost 2m tall, It was impossible for me to found a pants on surplus market so I made myself a shorts. it is great for a fall season and I use it alot for hiking. One question for Swiss people here. How do you communicate between cantons with languages you have? Do you have one unofficial "lingua franca" or you know other languages. One guy born there but with Hungarian origin told me on same qouestion that you don't talk to each others, which was of course joke, at least I think.

Glad you enjoyed the compilation. Usually units serving together speak the same language. Obviously, those with multilingual ability were promoted faster. Note that “Alpenflage”, “Alpentarn” etc are to the best of my knowledge fictional marketing terms. After sifting through hundreds of pages of archival documents, I have yet to find official designations of the camo pattern. The true “alpine camo” is the solid olive Kampfanzug 74 designed for mountain troops, paired with the Schneetarnüberwurf 76 white poncho for high altitude snow environments.

@andrewdopple6946 that was not the case. The French speaking and the German speaking trained separately at different locations. I served as an 'Unterländer' by the Gebirgstruppe Graubünden / Mountain Division, Canton Grison ('auf Wunsch') as marked in my Dientbüchlein. First criteria: being a proficient alpin skier. For the entirety of my service, 2 Rekruten / UOF / 8 WK / 4 EK (1976 - 1994). Most of the time I served Sch Geb Füs Kp IV/91 consisting of mainly Bündneroberländer, that spoke both Swiss German and Romansh (rätoromanisch Sursilvan). The commandos were called in Swiss German.

It can be hard if you don´t know how. You have to insert the magazine with the front first, then pull it down until it engages the front lip. Then you can rock it back to engage the rear lock.
