No rising damp in this cellar!

Hi Peter, We are a big fan of your video and quest! We are gradually working our way around our 1840 house replacing the cement with lime mortar. However, we have a conundrum with our cellar. We have put air bricks on both sides of the building, three one side, two the other with larger holes, they have been in place for a couple of years now. The cellar is dry in winter and wet in summer. Wondered if you may have a few ideas why? Many thanks!

Probably - its warmer in summer, and more humid - so more condensation.. You need humidity controlled fans - not airbricks. Need to actively push / pull air through the cellar that is dry. My cellar was very wet till I had RHL fans pulling air from the house, into cellar - took nearly 2 years, but dried out...

iv'e not bought a hose because of you pete, the owners have said theyre gonna get the damp problem sorted out now lol 2k aparantly, but i know theyre gonna just pop along drill holes and replaster.. then it'll happen again i bet.. i cant believe how much of a scam it is..

one cowboy popped along and declared the damp proof coarse was failing, (SLATE) which i knew was BS

Good luck though - feel free to ask if you thinking of buying anything - just remember most damp issues are breathablility related - so if you get plater and cement off, it'll dry out. Can also get things like high ground levels, cracked drains etc - but it's all logical stuff that you just knock off, bit by bit, till its warm and dry. Remember too that a DRY house will be a warm house...

Absolutely - we see this all the time - the damp industry is one big scam..
