Safari Song by Greta Van Fleet is a great example of this. 5-4-1 in G for the chorus and verse, then 1-4-5 in the bridge after the solo. Riff in A Major pentatonic, then D chord then G chord. Thanks for bringing the significance to my attention! Would love to see a video in this sense of the very melodic Mick Taylor-era Stones, a riff oriented GNR lesson, or maybe something Free or Aerosmith related. You’re a great teacher, and do an amazing job of actually helping people think for themselves

So if the riff is the minor pentatonic of the V does that mean you can solo using the minor pent of the I or stay with minor of the V. Eg How many times. The riff is on E (v). Great! solo in that, esp over the V. Can you use the minor pent of the A (I)? I’m sure you can but does that makes sound less blues rock?

I finally get what you’ve meant all the times you’ve said, “Start on the five.” Of course, I have questions...or a question. What are ways to solo over these progressions? For instance, you filled space on the one progression with Bmin pentatonic...would you start there with a solo or somewhere else?

Awesome lesson - really good explanation of how those riffs are created! Here's where I could use some help... Let's say you're in the key of A (using A, D, E chords). Can you get a little deeper into E pentatonic vs. A pentatonic either for soloing or riff writing in this way? I get that all E pentatonic notes would all be in the key of A, but am I right in saying you're kinda teasing at a mixolydian approach to the riff/melody even though you're only playing those notes? What makes you choose between the pentatonic positions throughout the song (E vs A) and what extra notes you might want to toss in if you were going to break out of the boxes or add some passing notes. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks, Ian! Love the channel.

Actually at 7.30 it was sounding very Sabbathy! That riff around 9.00 was very Traveling Riverside Blues. Besides, Jimmy "borrowed" a lot licks himself. Great tips.

I've always wondered why that order of chords sounds good (that is, starting on the V); the chords were "out of order" (to me) because of always playing straight blues. Turns out I just didn't know the "whole story". It's decidedly impossible for you to make a bad lesson. Thank you, again!
