Most people have heard, 'strike it like a match' but not really knowing what it meant. 'Sticking' is generally, you touch to get an arc, and it STICKS. Sticks can be strong. You have to stop and break the rod off with pliers. Scratching like a match - not just once - but many times quickly, gets the rod tip in more of a mood to keep the arc going. Don't move too far away from the work piece while scratching. Strike it like a match multiple times quickly and when the arc holds.. get welding. Sticking sticks on first touch.. so use more start-touches instead.

If you are new to stick welding cut down a rod to a third of its length and you will find that it is much easier to control and get an arc struck. Also helps if you don't have an auto darkening mask or are having to make do with a hand held shield.

Yeah right my longest run is probably 4" before sticking or just losing arc, but i just bought a harbor freight one for 90 dollars on clearance and tried teaching myself. Id get frustrated and give up each time but want to learn how so im getting it back out. I learn alot on here from people such as yourself, but i also see you guys laying it down and i say "oh ok i see how to now" and run out to the garage for the same ol shit lol

I usually find the beginning of a new rod is the most likely to get stuck, then once it's got stuck a couple of times you need to knock off the burnt/loose flux around the end, the next time you start you'll likely get an arc going, once it's going its' pretty forgiving in comparison to starting. I started learning with 7014 at 60 amps, not sure if it's the best way to start but it wasn't a disaster for sure.

I had to do some really serious welding that needed some serious strength a couple days ago. I didn’t “pool cue” it. I touched, then lifted a little bit to warm the rod tip. After that, I laid down a roll of beautiful nickels in nice, even passes. When that was done, I went to build up an edge on the same part. THAT took a bit of doing, because I had to let the bead cool before laying down some good, hot passes. Deslagging after each build is a must, but I couldn’t let the metal cool down much, because I needed a consistent heat treat in the metal. I would have liked to use some really hard rod, but I don’t think the blade I was working on would have survived the welding process, even being 1/4 inch steel. I did dump the hot metal into some nice, cold water to make the surface nice and hard for sharpening!

Roflmao!!😂😂😂😂😂 My very first day trying to stick weld it kept sticking to the metal no matter what I did. Stick so bad at one time that I bent the rod pretty bad at the bottom. Got my instructor and he tried on that machine as well. This instructor is super laid back, and relatively quiet. Keep in mind also that some of these machines are somewhat worn out. Well, it started sticking with him as well and he yelled a few words I hadn't heard from him before. I booked right out of there. This guy is yelling and those words at that? Not gonna get caught in that crossfire!

How is the welding business?
@KbgWelding
@KbgWelding Жыл бұрын
It's a challenge, but I wouldn't have it anyother way. We are growing and have got to a point where we are not squeezing out every week to cover payroll. Like a recent Ice Cube clip stated, "if you aren't willing to go 5 or 6 years without making a dollar then don't start. It takes that long to see positive results." If you have any questions please reach out. Most people that learn how to weld and want to start a business have the welding skills but not the business skills. At least I didn't. We are in year 6 and grateful. All glory to God, in Jesus Name.

I think I'll just turn the amps way too high and start the weld and don't warry bout undercut cause you can always tack it. Bonus points if your smokin a cigarette or talking with your friend
@KbgWelding
@KbgWelding 11 ай бұрын
It's not always about the amps. Sometimes the arc is difficult for a number of reasons. Mostly not having control of the rod. Just an alternative. Here is the full video updated. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYiZZ6yfirqomK8 Thanks for watching

Why not do this?
@Kiowan918
@Kiowan918 Жыл бұрын
I've never understood this lighting a match terminology. When you light a match, you start in one place, sweep then end up 1 or 2 inches further away. How are you supposed to start a weld by sweeping the rod like a match, you have to start and stop exactly where you want, anything else will result in a burn across the workpeice or an arc starting in the wrong place.
@KbgWelding
@KbgWelding Жыл бұрын
Where you start your arc is not necessarily where you have to start your weld. When you scratch or strike the arc you are simply igniting the fire. When you do this you can retreat back to the start of the weld or go opposite so your scratch ends up at the start of the weld. The key is to run this scratch across what is going to get welded anyway so not to leave arc strikes on the part.@@Kiowan918
@Kiowan918
@Kiowan918 Жыл бұрын
@@KbgWelding ok, but if you strike across the weld line, then go back you'd have to stop and clean the slag off where you started before you come back down over it surely or you'll be contaminating the weld? And then you have to stop and start and the problem begins again. Just seems much more logical to start your arc at the beginning of the weld so you can run it in one hit until the end of the weld or the end of your rod.
@jaredhammonds8255
@jaredhammonds8255 Жыл бұрын
Maybe as a beginner but after a while you will be able to strike your ark pretty much where you start welding. I've seen people use this technique more often than not.
