well done Brandon, I suggest using 6013 with electrode negative, and lower the amps, let's say around 30 amps, regardless the product manuals and recommendations about suggested amperage and all that, just the experiance and practice is your factor, yesterday I did some amazing 1mm sheet welds with 2mm 6013 DCEN, it was fantastic, and even you can fill some metal gaps with this techneque plus using tack weld principal, I am not a pro I am just a DIYer, I use arch weld to fix some stuffs arround the house, we all lern from each other, keep up the good work

Right on man and you are SPOT ON with DCEN! I wish I would have tried DCEN but whereas I didn't clean the metal i stayed with DCEP thinking it would help to burn through the rust. DCEN is the way to go on thin metal for sure! Thanks for sharing @Mahmoud Omar 👍🙏

Hi Brandon, thank you for showing us not to be afraid to use stick welder on thin metal. And it's great that you promote the philosophy of fixing things rather than throwing them away. I'd also like to share a tip of how I remove spinning bolts. I simply cut a small groove into the bolt head for a flat screwdriver to hold onto it. This way you can even use the same bolts again.

Dude, next time get yourself some 1/16 6013:and above all clean those weld areas up with a wire wheel or at leas sandpaper. To get those stupid carriage bolts off chop them with a whiz wheel or a 4,5 “ grinder and a cutoff disk . Those bolts are $2/ pound at tractor supply. Also as said before just icky up some huge oversized washers there as well. They will suck up the heat more and it will weld easier. Also consider using a piece of scrap copper water pipe flattened as a backer while you weld It will suck up the heat prevent burn through( some of it) and make the job go better. I keep a piece hanging on the wall just for such a thing. Don’t get me wrong I’m not criticizing here just suggesting ways to make it better and easier

Great tips and spot on about Tractor Supply. I buy all my fasteners there. You cant beat their prices. I have some 6013 1/16" videos I did a head to head comparison with straight and reverse polarity on thin metal. They are super springy! I probably should have ground the rust for demonstration purposes, but for practical purposes, it wasn't really necessary for what the application was. Fender washers were a good idea also, but that would have required me to drive to the store and AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!! LOL Cheers brother.

Good honest real world repair job, on stuff like that, backing the joint with some copper strip or heavier steel can help avoid burning through-if of course you can get to the underside of the job. Stop n start helps (its how I weld vertical up with 6013 if I have to). Did I hear you say "its just a wheelbarrow" what a thing to say about the thing you take your cash to the bank in each week.

@spektrum426 5 жыл бұрын
@Swampy I recently was researching this topic and noted the following; DCEP will put more heat into the base metal and therefore more penetration. DCEN will put more heat into the electrode. I have tested both and found this to be true. If I used DCEN on thicker metal, its deposition rate was very high, but tended to not blend into the base metal unless I cranked up high amps. DCEP blends with the base metal really well, but will easily blow holes in thinner metals.

Thank you for your service buddy! Don't knock the budget welders. Theres no shame in it. You can do a TON of stuff with a 200 dollar welder. Over the years I've burned pounds of rods building dozens of car haulers, equipment racks, floor pans for commercial buildings, you name it. The list goes on. The biggest hurdle with some of the budget welders is lack of support, directions and warranty but rest assured, with practice on your welder you will be laying down pretty beads in no time. You could have a 10,000 dollar welder and without time under the hood your welds will not look as nice as someone's who has been practicing on their 200 dollar welder. That's a fact. Good luck buddy and thanks for watching and commenting.

I've done this... you should have first welded the cracks. And tig is best but yea, mig is better than stick for this. (swap your cables) Then put the patches on the _underside_! That way they don't interfere with using the wheelbarrow. You could have also just welded the bolt heads to the tub in the first place. And I replace my handles with longer 2X4's. I get tired of kicking the feet of the thing walking.

I have been doing this for years, while using a Mig does a cleaner weld, it has a tendency to push through thin metal. That coupled with the fact the the wire has a habit of kinking inside the cable makes it more trouble than its worth. I have been repairing a beat up old Model A Ford fender using my trusty old stick welder. I added two patch panels and welded them in and ground them smooth inside and out, it’s about 80 percent done and by the time it’s finished you won’t be able to tell it was stick welded.

This is inspiring. I have two wheelbarrows that have been stored outside for ten to twenty years and require my attention. I found some 6013 1/16th rod at harbor freight for my 100 amp Sears buzz box. I know the blacksmiths would use Borax as flux in forge welding,. This is (for now) readily available at Walmart and others, a little sprinkle between layers of metal could be very helpful. Reheating with a torch/induction coil (red or orange heat) and using hammer and anvil to shape and anneal might be helpful. The idea of using some (heavy) copper as a backer to prevent burn through is very good. Thanks and good luck. More Thoughts: I don't t know if Borax and electrode flux play well together. Forge welding involved careful high heat with hammering to squeeze out the Borax flux, it could get in the way. Borax would be galvanized compatible to a point, because many brass brazing fluxs are mostly Borax (brass = copper + zinc) and galvanized = zinc.

Good job Brandon, you were using d.c. I have an a.c. industrial welder and it welds horribly and I have ground most off and intend to purchase a "Tig" welder and use "Argon Gas" to shield the molten pool. . . I believe you can go down on amperage below 40 amps the Tungsten allows you to weld without all the popping and sputter with little to no clean-up. I tried to get a 200 amp diode but no one has one in this area except "e bay" a diode will change the a.c. to d.c. for better arc stability.

Wow, Very skilful welding on difficult material! You're right, they don't have to look pretty, just a wheelbarrow, only needs to be strong & functional. 3/32" electrodes - that works out to be about 2.4mm - they are very thick! No wonder they recommend 70A minimum. I am wondering why you would not use smaller electrodes, such as 2mm or 1.6mm. A lot less heat generated and less starting amps required. A good inverter arc welder like that one should have good control right down to 20A.

I would just like to suggest to you, next time you have a job like that, try 6011 using the same technique. May be just my preference but I dislike 6013 it is prone to porosity, 6011 on the other hand has much less flux, and less prone to porosity. I did successfully use 6011 on thin metal with a buzz box. Not telling you what to do, this is just a suggestion.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Valcourt interesting Richard! I might just give that rod a try... I've never had great luck with 6011 rods running real low amperage on a buzz box so maybe I'll give it a try on this dc unit. It might make for an interesting video! Thanks buddy

By coincidence, Uncle (LOL) Bob Moffatt has just done a video on rusty steel using 6011 over on weld.com, second coincidence, is I just did a job on thin wall steel tube to rusty old tube. I used 6013s and cleaned up the steel best I could, inverter welder EN. 2.5 mm rods at 40 amps, plus a try with 1.6mm 6013s. Not pretty, it seems to me the problem with 6013 on inverters at low amps is arc blow- it looks like the arc does not have enough juice to push the slag back, I don't have arc force settings on my old inverter, nor do I have a buzz box I could have switched to,so I had to do hotter passes and start n stop to avoid blowing holes, I still ended up with what we limeys call "Farmers welds" or Pigeon poop welding.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 6 жыл бұрын
Jaques Daniels I got a lot of great viewer comments and suggestions on this video which prompted me to pick up some small diameter 6013 and 6011 rods and make passes using dcen and dcep and then doing a side by side comparison. The arc force must have a lot to do with it because I've never had good luck with 6013 either. Wait until you see the comparison video.

I have a wheel barrow I have had for 30+ yrs and it is going to need to have the carriage bolts replaced along with some other repairs. I have painted it everywhere multiple times (except tires), handles included and it is still going strong. I hate to guess how much dirt and gravel, etc I have moved with it and how much cement I have mixed in it. It will make a good winter project to do some serious maintenance on it. I have had it so long it feels like an old friend. I have thought about welding a layer of sheet metal in the bottom of it to keep it going.

I would have used 6011 and beat a pan into shape to fit the bottom and get me up to thicker metal on the sides. Then whip weld it, if you lined it with 1/8 maybe that special steel from Sweden that has memory and is A R. Do that and your Grand kids will still be using that wheel barrow, long after you're taking the dirt nap LOL. If the metal is really thin whip an inch or two otherwise you will burn it up, just how I've solved similar problems Brother, I hope it helps Your fix was great keep up the great work. Side Bar; the old guys who beat knowledge into my head (literally) when I was a kid told me if it could be welded with 6013, it didn't need to be welded in the first place. When I was a newbie I thought 6013 was the stuff to use but the old timers straightened my young butt up in short order.

Very true 👍 Even to this day I ALWAYS evaluate risk versus reward. If I'm not 100% sure I can do the job properly, I won't take it on. It's one reason I can charge what I charge. I'm not the cheapest but I sleep well knowing I'm not taking unnecessary risks at other people's expense.

Yes I ve gone down to 1mm plate using a lo hy 2.5 rod ideally though a 6013 rod is better you just gotta be patient and have a light hand I usually run a series of tacks then bridge them polish back not grind then let it cool and run a bead over the top. there are a few different methods you can use just let the metal cool in between tacks and patience.

Good job. Only I would like to say for 6013 sticks is better to clear any rust before welding, because if not weld is much more prone to crack. I find that from my experience. If you need to work with rusty or dirty metal 6011 is much better option but in your case not possible because of too much penetration as you already say.
