Hi! Just some advice, because it's a the new "longwear" formula those shadow sticks tend to set SUPER fast- so it's best to work on one eye at a time. Also, because you used the milani eye primer, it's kind of like trying to rub crayon over glue... it's just not going to move so easily and it's going to be patchy. Next time you should try it without eye primer, and complete one eye at a time. You absolutely saved the look with powder, and the blue looks stunning on you!! Love your videos! ❤

I agree. Most shadow sticks go on better without primer, and you get a much better color payoff. I use shadow sticks when I have to work 10-12 hour days, and they last!

Another thought! You might try using the shadow sticks without an eye primer - I think I heard once (maybe from Shelby Wilson?) that the eye primer can affect the performance of the stick since they’re both creams and shadow sticks are often made to act as their own primer :)

I don't use a primer with shadow sticks either. I just put a little foundation and setting powder. I have found shadow sticks work great that way for me..

Pro artist here. Take the darker shadow stick and blend a patch on the v of your hand(where thumb and index finger form a v on back of hand) use a short stiffer brush (the one you were using was too floppy) pick up off your hand the warmth of your hand changes the stick formula and it’s easier to use. Blend from lashes on out in small sections, you’ll get faster and faster more you do it

I know you’re dedicated to Milani eyeshadow primer, but to anyone else reading, LA Girl has a “Pro Primer” eyeshadow primer stick I really like. It has a similar feel and thickness as using a MAC paint pot as primer.

I use eye shadow sticks for when I need a quick look. A denser eye shadow brush or even a small dense face is great for blending dark shades!

When you started talking about stick concealers, I had an ah-ha moment and went to my concealer drawer and pulled out a few forgotten favorites, including the Almay skin perfecting concealer stick (which is one of the concealer sticks I've ever tried), as well as Marc Jacobs and Bare Minerals. I'm going to try some of these out and see if they still work and/or how I feel about it now. Since you inspired me at the beginning of the video to shop my stash, it was funny that later you asked the question about hearing someone mention a product and it sparking something...so thank you. I didn't have the Neutrogena, but Almay is still drugstore and I'm fairly certain it had the nod from you years ago. I generally work with shadow sticks Shelby Wilson style, keeping the darker shadows on the outside and rarely working with more than 2 at a time. It was helpful to see someone trying to make a "look" work---theres not much out there that I've found for working with shadow sticks. Considering how they seem to be having a renaissance, maybe that will change. I also LOVED that you showed how to fix the look as well. Knowing how to fix makeup mistakes is Uber important. Often it just comes with time and confidence, but if I could go back in time and tell my baby-makeup-self one thing it is this: Don't panic! There's always a fix. 😉 I've been loving my Ami Cole stick in Spice and I picked up a newish Em Cosmetics stick blush In Chiffon (soft purply-pink). I've also been leaning into a number of my drugstore eyeshadow sticks, particularly ELF's last crop of matte shadows. There are some excellent colors that you don't see everywhere--especially not with BB or LM. Some of my elf faves are "lava lamp" which is a chartreuse and "vintage suede" which is an awesome mustard. Sooo good!❤❤❤

One thing that helps me with even coverage with pigmented shadow sticks: I draw a decent sized dot of shadow on my fingertip, get a good amount of product, the circular motion of drawing on your finger warms it up, then tap it over the shadow you already had on the lid, it will fill in any patchiness. I would also use more Dune in the crease and blended out, that really made an impact. It's easiest to start at the lashline and work outward, it's not like powder where you can lay down a blob in the middle and spread it around.

I have the same struggle with shadow sticks… I don’t quite understand why so many people seem to think they’re so “quick and easy” because they are way more work than powder IMO. I *think* if you had taken a second stick in a lighter shimmery shade on the inner 2/3 of the lid it would’ve created more of a “look” and disguised some of the patchiness. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I fell back in love with the Milk sticks, I know they're not the sexy new brand at the table but they are my favorite. I absolutely love the cooler toned contour sticks which I use for bronzer when I want a more cool face, and they have different finishes in their blush sticks. I wasn't a fan of the original "werk" blush but some of their new colors are fantastic. Runner up: it's hard to beat the Wet N' Wild blushes, they don't have a great color lineup but they are fantastic. For eyes I love the Thrive eye brighteners, they are so easy for a quick "gotta go to work in 10 minutes" office-appropriate shadow, you almost don't need a mirror.

Love your videos Emily! A little tip in working with the eye sticks is get a thicker somewhat stiffer (not too stiff) to help blend them. I found a great one through real techniques that works great. That being said I thought you did a great job. Love the blue navy on you.

I have the hardest time with stick shadows on my eyes! My eyes are hooded, and lots of texture, and I feel like when I wear shadow sticks they feel sticky on my eye all day 😩 I love the way they look though and the ease of use! You look gorgeous ❤️

I have hooded eyes too. The new Hourglass shadow sticks are quite thin in texture and don't crease on me. I have Jouer sticks too that don't crease. Do you set your eye? I set mine lightly with a face powder before doing my eyes

The bare minerals stick foundation is one of my all time faves. Hate that it’s gone. But for eyes, I always struggle with sticks. They are marketed as being easier but I always get a patchy result and it takes me longer to blend them. I’ve given up on shadow sticks other than a Smokey liner.

When i use the caviar stiks i really go to town with a blending brush, and only draw where i want it. Its fairly easy to correct, so you cant work as if its a powder with the pigment ❤❤❤️ love that blue😍

I have found when trying to blend shadow sticks that a smudger brush works better at what you're trying to do better than a blending brush. Hope that helps you in the future. 😊

Hi Emily! I love this - I do the same work-friendly eyeshadow look every day (Laura Mercier caviar stick in Strapless) and I noticed that the caviar sticks can get patchy if I try to build them up or go back to add more to the edges. I found that the best result for me happens when I cover my lid and add a bit extra to the crease at the same time, then I dab over the lid with the flat side of a brush and blend out the crease with a brush like the one you used. I try to not go back to add any more because 9/10 times it gets patchy. I don't know if that would work with the blue 🤔 Love your videos! Thank you ❤

Good save. I think those shadow sticks are meant for more of a bold, not so blended look like what you get from powder shadows. But what do I know. I definitely loved that "Dune" blush stick, though. 👏👍 Already on my wish list. 🤭

Have you tried the Rare Beauty eyeshadow sticks? They are beautiful, they layer, they stay put, classy colors, shine without glitter. Really nice!

I've been on the fence about doing a persona order. But I was wanting a multi stick to add to my travel makeup bag just couldn't decide which one. Plenty of good reviews on the persona sticks so now I have a persona order coming my way. Yay

My fav eyeshadow sticks are Hourglass, Jouer and Tarte (they brought out a holiday set with double ended sticks)

My favorite are the Mally eyeshadow sticks, Lancome has good ones too but not a huge range of shades. Lancome has good stick foundation as well. For blush, Josie Maran makes great luminous blush sticks because they have argan oil in them.
