Hey Tinman. I’ve built a lot of 026’s over the years. People love that saw but I’ve had so many issues with carbs on those saws. I would much prefer a 51 or 55 Husqvarna as a firewood saw. The choke is a big problem on those saws, even though the choke flap in the air filter is engaging, the plastic plate is not closing off the opening. You can take the filter a part and sand that flap some and it will help it to pull fuel. I’ve got a friend that has one and every year he asks me to look at it, and all I do is pop the filter cover off and spray it with starting fluid and it pops off and that’s all it takes. I’ve built so many of those I won’t work on them any longer. I’d much rather have the home owner model of an 025 or an MS250. More dependable saws if you ask me. The 024 and 026 to me are to temperamental and they just aren’t that dependable. If someone has a good running one that is like a unicorn to me. Stihl makes some awesome saws, although I’m a Husqvarna man myself, but that saw is not one I like. The newer MS261 is a heck of a good saw, way better than an 026.

This is most probably another 024/026/260 carb. The 036 carb has a built in choke flap. Fuel line: yes, there are two versions. The old one is shorter and just straight. The new one has this „S“ shape to it. Never thought that through but the new one might be thicker at the top portion. Just can tell that my sweet running 026 red lever (with heated handle) has the old, short fuel line in it. Can’t wait to see Charlie joining you in the shop. My daughter helps me working on saws since the age of 3 😂
@skravlesen3 ай бұрын
I second the older shorter fuel line. Was asked when buying a new one for my 95' 026, and was told by the dealer that the older ones used the shorter one since it was one of the older models. A bit of a sidenote. The 036/360 carb it available as a limiter carb if buying new, 3 versions. 1 without compensator(nozzle due hicky), one with compensator, and one with compensator and limiters. Not sure about the 026. Pro tip, when assembling the throttle. Put the leaver in chocke, holds it in much easier😊

This was a great video. It reminded me of my own issues getting an 026 fuel problem lined out. Mine had that factory sealant floating around inside the carb sticking the needle. One minute it started on the first pull and ran great, the next minute no fuel and it wouldn't start. I found the sealant floating around in it when I disassembled for the carb kit. Oh, I was taking apart the top of the handle every time I removed the carb too and after about the third or fourth time I found out by accident the carb linkage can be removed by holding the throttle wide open and then disconnecting the linkage from the carb. It'll reconnect the same way. You're gonna love that, I did! LOL!

I had months of trouble with my 036 Pro, it did the same thing. Replace the impulse line. My gas line had fuel but my spark plug was dry. The impulse was a little hard but seemed good. It wasn't. Soon as I put a new impulse line on and an OEM, it fired and it runs. Its still 10 pulls cold to start, but one pull once it fires.

interestingly enough...i did the SAME EXACT THING with my fuel line on my last 026 build. cut a grommet to prevent fuel leaks at the tank and slid Echo fuel line through from carb to tank. also added a Walbro fuel filter and that fixed my fuel delivery issues! theres ways around EVERYTHIING! lol. but i didnt do a timing advance on this saw and she hit on pull number 3...but i DID have to fatten up to a 1 1/8 th of a turn on both sides...im assuming till the new rings seat. ive idled 2 tanks through it but i also added Caber rings which in my experience,, takes a lil bit for them to seat properly. thanks for the info and these ARE GREAT little saws! but i WILL say that this saw gave me a FIT going back together. for SOME ODD REASON it chose to fight me THE WHOLE WAY! but i gotter' DONE'

Watching this series is like looking in the mirror when I tried to revive an o28 super. I decided I liked my shoulder more than the saw and haven’t looked back. I’ve never had that kind of trouble with my husqvarna’s or even ol’ Mcculloch’s. Toss it n keep your pulling arm from getting injured. If your more determined than myself it might be wise to replace that air filter. That was the only thing I didn’t try

Sounds like an 026 that I've rebuilt before. Never ran the best. Also it's a good idea to always keep the top cover on so your flywheel can cool the cylinder. Without it the air just goes straight up . Doesn't take too long to get hot. Have a recently built ms260 that runs poorer once warmed up but I believe I have narrowed it down to piston ring end gap that's just a little tight. So I run it till it starts to run different than let it sit and repeat. It has caber rings so they do have the reputation of breaking in slow. But it's running better and better every tank I put through it!!!
@steveriggenbach903 ай бұрын
Glad you keep the camera rolling. Proud that you didn’t throw it lol. Lets us see how you approach different issues. Have you checked compression? I dip my fuel filters while checking. I had one that looked great, but weak at the top which only allowed gas to enter there. It limited the flow.

Maybe the impulse seat on the cylinder or carb kit it was a bit of a mix and match kit you put in. Frustrating when they don't cooperate. It knows it needs to be in the wood that's what it lives for😂. Will be very informative when you solve it. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙

I had an 026 with a similar problem, ended up being a loose welch plug in the carb. Little tap with a punch and hammer, and it ran great. I finally noticed it after about the 5th carb clean. 🙄
@StuInTheSticks3 ай бұрын
These 026/MS260 had a whole bunch of different carb options during their production runs 260's alone had four different carbs. I have a bunch of these little buggers great running saws but very fussy when tuning them, all have different carbs on them and all of them are very picky when adjusting them. You can't make big adjustments on them only a hair at a time make a cut or two then just a tad again 1/16 of a turn or less, on mine 1/8 of a turn on either jet one way or the other can mean it will run great or not at all like I said these saws are very picky at least the ones I have. Great running saws otherwise but I agree with you I personally prefer working on my Husqvarna and Jonsered saws.

You know what may be happening is the fuel line may be collapsing when the saw gets warm and then cuts fuel off. Tried using the clear yellow fuel line and the same thing happened to me. Then it stays crimped when it gets cold.you can try to put a small spring in the fuel line to prevent it from collapsing where it makes a bend to varb.
@Robert-uh6bx3 ай бұрын
It’s running lean on the low circuit for some reason. That’s what’s making it hard to start. If a saw is not easy to tune then you got an issue. Also see if the saw will idle in all positions.
@Alfie141-983 ай бұрын
Looks like metering system problems . Try a combination different lever heights and diaphragms with different spigot dimensions to make the needle opening more sensitive. Sounds like insufficient fuel volume in the metering chamber.
@kennytheguitarfanatic0543 ай бұрын
That is one of those Stihl saws with the choke in the air filter that can be problematic like the Stihl 028/038. I bet the rings need seated in. If having a hard time starting put oil in the cylinder it should start.

Pulse line? 😮. I kind of like when things go wrong, for the educational value. Things go bad for everyone, and you have the resources to make a change, and the knowledge to go deeper than average Joe that has neither alternative parts or experience to go further. Anyone can be a parts changer, but a real mechanic keeps digging deeper because that’s what makes you a mechanic. Damn it, now I am not letting this silly mindless piece of metal get the best of me, cuz that’s what I am. ( Spinach optional )😂. For everyone I get right off the bat I probably get one that isn’t, and that’s where the challenge comes in. You will get it, and I need one with your sticker (decal) on it, for a tired Old Man 😊
