Stihl 031AV Chainsaw Dual Port

Serviced & repaired by Northwest Performance Saws. This saw was pretty scuzzy when I first encountered it. It ended up turning out to be a pretty nice saw. I found a new old stock fan housing & tank housing online and put them on. As you might suspect, I had to refurbish the entire fuel system and rebuild the carb. The cylinder, piston & rings were in surprisingly good shape with 138 psi. Not too bad for being original parts. After a super thorough cleaning(it sucked) and a few clutch parts she was ready to go. Schönes Ding. Aber eher eine 031er AV aus den letzten Jahren. Und die Kette Hängt durch! Abgesehen davon, es wird gedrückt beim Sägen, das ist ein Zeichen für eine nicht ganz so Schärfe Hobelzahnkette. Und das bei einem Nadelholz!?

I'm afraid Stihl did not make a dual port muffler for the 031. That muffler in the video was originally a single port that I modified. They are readily available on eBay.

hey, could you tell me how you ported the muffler? i got one to but it needs some power upgrades. and what rpm's you running ?

It's been awhile since I made that vid but I set the low rpm at around 3,000 and high rpms were around 13,500 I believe. There's not much to that muffler, porting it out was pretty easy. All I had to do was drill a hole, use a dremel to open it up and then weld on the deflector. I did have to shape the spark arrestor screen a little to get it to seat properly in the deflector, but eventually it fit in there just fine and I secured it with a machine screw.

That muffler is actually the oem original one. I modded it myself.

The muffler on my 031 won't stay tight. I've had it in the shop twice and both times it loosened after 3-4 tanks of fuel. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the screws aren't being torqued down enough. I would add some loctite to each screw and torque to spec. That is assuming the cylinder threads and case threads aren't damaged. If they are then you can repair them with threaded inserts or re-tap them to size 6 metric.

Ok, thanks. Actually, I tried to get to the screws today and found that the whole top had to come off. It appeared that the carburetor was going to come off with it, so I stopped there. I'll take it back to the shop and ask about putting some loctite on them. This saw has some sentimental value, but I really like the way it cuts.

@@John-gj1jr The throttle linkage is connected to the carb via the handle. As long as you disconnect it you have nothing to worry about. If you do take it to that shopand thry can't fix the problem let me know, I can fix it for ya.

OK. I wish I could find an "exploded view" of the saw. Does the top hinge back on the handle?

@@John-gj1jr I have a parts list for the 031 saws that I can send you. The top can hinge on the rear handle but its easier just to remove the nut and bolt on that rear handle and free the top cover/handle completely.

Oh boy, unless it is low hours and is real minty then that's a big no to me. A used one that is a good runner should be more in the 75 to 150 range. Of course if its from ebay then add 25 to 30% to that.
