In this video I show how to remove a stihl flywheel. Then I compare the timing numbers of an oem cylinder and a Hyway cylinder.
Thanks for watching!!
To purchase Hyway parts like the ones in the video please go to www.wolfcreeksawshop.com.

I like the 038 Mag II with a 28" es light bar for felling (very well built saws), and my 272 with 24" Tsumura light bar for cutting up firewood and TSI work. 038 mag II is a little stronger stock, but I like both saws. That 038 well tuned with good gas/oil will last another 30 years on that cylinder. Great to see this saw being rejuvenated.

They have an open transfer port design! They also have those crank stuffer? mybe like those 661 ect..

Makes ya wonder what would happen if you just square up a port at opening. It seems it would give you more rapid fill and better evacuate exhaust gasses with a more rapid rise in the "injection of the new fuel/air charge. Might lead to better performance without actually having to change timing
@johnw5242
@johnw5242 2 жыл бұрын
It seems like the Hyway cylinder's profiles for both intake and exhaust were much flatter and wider @ the roof, allowing more flow at "first crack" thru 1° and maybe even sub 1° of additional crank rotation following that "1st ray of light."

apparently the Hyway cylinder looks closer to the stock Stihl than the Farmertec one. Farmertec (with 0,020" base gasket) had 96.5 ex, 68.5 in, 112 tp. this gave 15.5 blow down only, so i've deleted the base gasket and still had to JB Weld the tp roof to come to my target (116 tp, 160 ex, 156 in duration) nice vid!... thanks for sharing such content

On intake, excessive duration may lead to poorer performance. as the pressurized charge in the crank case is relieved by the open port, pressure drops rapidly. the last few degrees of open intake at super low pressure doesn't accomplish much in terms of putting a larger, stoichiometric charge into the chamber. On the exhaust side, a low pressure charge finr the intake port can be affected by back pressure pulses from the muffler actually pushing burnt gases back into the chamber or at least stopping the all of the larger charge of new fueal/air from entering the chamber. Just thinking out loud so I could be all wrong. It's just that "scavenging" exhaust systems have been the holy grail of engine builders for a very long time

Cool video. Can you still get the tank and handle new for these 038 magnum 2 saws? I dropped my saw last year and I broke the handle on the bottom,JB welded it together and put a piece of aluminum to strengthen it but it looks welfare. I got this saw from my uncle after he died,he bought it brand new in the 80s so I want to keep it in good shape,still runs great and it’s a good complement to my sweet 066. Hello from Vancouver island 😎

Is there anyone out there making tuned pipes for chainsaws. One thing I recall form my shop rat days in cycle shops is that lowering back pressure increases top end but robs that from low and mid range grunt. I would think that a saw needs that grunt to keep winding thru a cut. Most of the muffler mods I see would increase flow and reduce back pressure and that may not yield a better cutting saw

What if your piston stop is to deep an doesn’t let the piston travel to 180 degrees ? Shouldn’t you back it out to Get a true reading ?
@tinmanssaws
@tinmanssaws 2 жыл бұрын
A piston stop can be anything really. As long as you make sure the piston stops in the same place in both directions to make sure you are zeroed.
@WildAcresFarms
@WildAcresFarms 2 жыл бұрын
His stop in this video was 44 degrees short of stopping the piston at TDC. Make sure it’s exactly the same degrees in both directions, you’re good to remove the stop and begin timing. (I typically use a ballpoint pen.)
