After watching your battles with this dreadful spring I came up with a solution that worked perfectly. That is rare for me. I put 2 large nails in my workbench and on one I put the inside end of the spring. Over that I put the spool and then started winding until the hook got to the point I could attach it to the other nail. I wound until the spring was about as tight as I could make it. Using a large cable tie I placed it around the spring, like the way the strap on the purchased spring was retained. I made certain the end of the tie was on the opposite side to the hook. I slipped it of the nails and trimmed the excess cable tie. I took the spring a placed it in the plastic manifold with the hook over the recess where seats. Push it down until the cable tie popped off and removed the tie. I replace the cord with 4mm plated nylon unsheathed rope. Success but not without your help, thanks.,👍👍👍

This was quite helpful. Thanks! I am in the process of repairing my FS45C. My rope didn't break, but the outside recoil spring was so badly rusted that it no longer recoiled. So the rope was just dangling. Removing the spring gave me several pieces. Just like you, I have ordered a replacement FS45 Pull Starter Assembly, but now I know it won't fit. So I have ordered springs also.

For 4 hours I tried to get the spring back into that spot. It reinforced my existing hatred of spring thingies. After I watch the first part of this video I realised you could buy the back plate. On eBay they have these already loaded with the cord for $20, sold. BUT one should always watch to the end, darn. 😆

I had same problem - broke the cord. I decided to replace the cord and, of course, popped the recoil spring. Went to Stihl dealer and got a new one for $18 AUD. Came packaged in an excellent plastic holder. Dropped straight in with no fuss. Easy repair after that. Sometimes it's worth buying genuine.

Glad I came across your vid. My FS 45C Sthil easy start pull cord broke today. Not sure I have the patience, knowledge, or nerves to attempt your fix. But I shall try. Thank you.

Just shoot me. I have a KM55 rcz. Great trimmer with broken pull cord. Not sure I have your level of patience. This repair is going to take no less than a 12-pack. Great vid! Thanks!

I'm serious about fitting one of these in a large scale RC plane. Do you happen to have an reasonably accurate width dimension of the Stihl FS45 engine head? Help on this would be greatly appreciated.
