This is how I do these builds so if you have a better way thats awesome... but make your own video please because its confusing those that want to learn when you "experts" argue with my methods... I do the saws this way for a reason and they are runners... and reliable... I have the real world results to back it up... jvust saying...
Thanks for watching!!!

thats awesome my man... love to hear it and email if you have any questions... cant guarantee i will respond right away bur if i see it i will gladly help if i can... i would honestly look at benchtop lathes... i know guys that use them and even if you upgraded down the road it would still be a tool you can use... i wish i would have went that route when i was still sending every cylinder off to get machined... you will be somewhat limited on the benchtop setup but it will get you by... and YES its addicting lol

Ok, so I'm a visual learner. A person can tell me how to do something, until they are blue in the face, or I can read something 20 times and I will have less of an understanding of it, than if I look at something once. Whoever came up with "cutaways", regardless of the item, was a dang genius. This was about as simple as it gets. Thanks John.

Thanks for your work on this channel. I saw you on treeson's channel doing the 200t. It wasn't obvious to me on first watch how you are getting TDC with the wheel. I then realized you are rotating the wheel with respect to the pointer *without* moving the piston. On second watch I heard you say you were going to tighten the chuck which is what clued me in that the wheel was moving independently of the piston. (if I am right, perhaps you can add a text over comment to the video , if I am not right, can you explain further) I'm not that mechanically inclined 😀

@@Steve_K_MS660 simple version: lowering the floor of the intake will add more duration by holding the intake open longer. Raising the ROOF of the exhaust port will raise the powerband and reduce the compression ratio, resulting in a saw that makes tons of power at high rpm but also has less low-end torque. Something similar happens if you raise the upper transfer ports in the sides of the cylinder to reduce blowdown. 25+ degrees of blowdown is a torquey saw, 20 or less and you get a highspeed screamer. There’s the crazy simple version. (You can also widen or change the shape of the openings to increase airflow without changing timing.)

Oh and Re that air filter baffle, a great "easy McGuyver fix" for this carb spitback problem, w/o restrictive contraptions like most OEM's employ, you can simply cut some VERY porous filter-media to fit inside your air-filter, this stuff (lawnmower type, like real high porosity, the type that needs oil to be used, but you're not oiling it here or using it for filtration, merely as a "fuel-spitback sponge" to replace the restrictive plates/boxes/baffles the OEM's try using to protect the filter media from spitback) Am not sure but I've got a suspicion/theory that if you make your intake-port "funneled" so that the inner opening on the cylinder wall is the *tight* spot, a 'reverse-megaphone' if you will, this should majorly dissuade movement of gases in the wrong direction @ carb throat!
@joescissorhands141

Thankfully I've missed the spectacle of someone trying to show-how to use a timing wheel, and botching it :P Your cut-away is, by FAR, the nicest I've seen -- you've GOTTA do a video with just that, do a "how 2 strokes work, w/ cut-away model" video you need that you don't have enough basic theory you just have a bunch of "here's next-level product, I made it all myself" videos (which of course, I am sure, resulted in a mess in Comments when you got into porting...I don't even know if i dare to go peek at the comments there, the forums alone are a nightmare let alone comment-arguments!) I literally use red, blue and yellow for exhaust/intake/charge when I'm doing my port-mapping, though I guess you'd say port mapping is dumb because you don't care about durations -- I'd really love more explanation on that, I know you're not saying "Jennings, Blair et al got it wrong", my guess is that the shorter strokes and piston-fed intake of chainsaws means the strict timing #'s, more than durations, are important - am guessing that's your thinking (for instance on that saw in the video, if you drop that jug much and raise exhaust roof, the lower exhaust FLOOR won't really matter because at BDC the slug still won't be low enough to continue exposing more window, so you can almost 'get away' with a slammed cyilnder *plus* raised ceiling, w/o "blowing up your duration & short-circuiting the cylinder") You seem to pay almost no mind, not only to durations, but port SHAPE AND WIDTH, in recent weeks' studies I've found that in many instances we would NOT want to alter timing, at all, but would want to alter width (or shape, for instance shape of exhaust ceiling, like how Stihl's are shaped for top RPM power, and Echo's tend to be more round for mid-range power and a weaker top-end) Thanks for any insight if you can reply, hope my tone was OK I wanna be clear I've thumbs-up'd, subscribed, and am posting from a place of only respect & curiosity, I only have 3 engines under my belt and 2 books, am very much in noob-learning-mode, so please don't take the above as me positing I'm right, I just wanna understand, for instance on duration I just had to JB one of the 56mm 660 jugs, this obviously let me choose my intake-floor and therefore my intake-timing, but I was left with this tiny slot (had to move the floor like 10mm upwards, teh big bore pistons come 80thou short skirted!), and had to choose what height to make its ceiling IE its total-duration, I just did 10deg more total-duration than my exhaust they came out 158deg and 149deg respectively, will have a video on this saw either today or tomorrow it's "my attempt" at a crazy build like one of yours (the chamber is smaller than a regular 54mm chamber, and displacement is now over 103cc lol, am hoping the starter can handle it I don't have D-handle just Elasto's!!)
@joescissorhands141
@joescissorhands141 2 жыл бұрын
Oh that's right the durations won't matter to you :P The 56mm 660 is: 101.1deg ABDC intake (was 74.4 with the big bore piston, before JB!!), exhaust raised from 110.5deg to 106deg. Squishing just over 21thou. Compression ratio not yet determined, doing final displacements today, but about a whole point higher IE 10:1 to 11:1 compression ratio. 28.9deg blowdown, and this is FULL TRANSFER ie using a thin base-gasket (I mention it that way because, if not doing upper-transfers which I didn't really do much to, if your uppers height is fixed, then dropping that base gasket and/or shaving the deck will take-away from your transfers, at BDC the oem-spec has that piston BARELY fully-opening the transfers at true BDC, so lowering their original position w/o raising them w/ a right-angle grinder will lower their total duration which is already very very low. I didn't move my exhaust roof much, but *DID* widen it from the paltry ~62% bore width it was OEM, to nearly 68%, which is what my piston skirt width let me get-away with while still leaving 65thou on each side for proper sealing!

@johnscustomsaws
@johnscustomsaws 2 жыл бұрын
thanks bud... depends on what you are using the 660 for... big wood or firewood ripper... for big wood you are going to want to do finger ports probably and your intake will end up pretty low if you take a lot out of the squish... the exhaust on the 660 is like 96ish stock so u will be lucky to get to 98 or 99... and blowdown i would tighten it up a little more they have a morre conventional "dirty" transfer port layout so 22 is a good number i have found... but again its all relative... and there is a lot to it i just try to give you guys a basic idea and why i dont get too deep into it... just gets super confusing

Hey Jon. Got a 026 sthil early 90s. Cut baffles out of muffler. Just wondering and I'm sure I could clean up ports abit. I'm a disabled paraplegic man just have a hard time starting the buggers. Think I've watched a bunch of your vids. Might need a degree wheel. Thanks bud

What was the kids channel name you mentioned in this video? I looked up "Just a Gear Head" and found a car channel, not saws.

Good explanation...is every stock 661 the same on numbers or do you have to get your numbers for every 661 that customers bring to you? IE Does mahle or Stihl machine each cylinder to the exact numbers you have say for the 661 in this video? Good on ya brother!

How much can you generally take off the piston to the popup before you have to cut the squish band?
@johnscustomsaws
@johnscustomsaws 2 жыл бұрын
without giving it away... (because its not my method to share) im basically cutting the minimum amount i can out of the squish to match (not exactly tho) the angle of the piston... sorry i cant be more specific but if you have machining ability you could mess around with it and figure it out... or even see where i end up in the end on part 2 and do the math yourself because i will share my actual numbers

Hello to you, good video, I am writing to you from FRANCE? and here, it is not common to modify our saws. My question is the following: Can we do without the squish and bottom of the cylinder step or is it an obligatory step to port the saw. You have to admit, it's complicated work when you don't have a turn. I don't know if you understood me, it's according to the translation. THANKS

Doing the maths i noticed that by lowering the cylinder the numbers are not gonna change all the same amount of degrees because of the different position on the circumference. More particularly, the blowdown will SLIGHTLY increase, as the transfers get more degrees lower than the exhaust port. Talkin about half degrees, maybe less, maybe more. If u cut off .050 from your cylinder u're gonna notice that by timing the saw again i guess. It is theory, but someone who's been on the practical side could show up and confirm/deny

Yeah I know what you are saying... like I said though I only want to cover the bare bones basics... if I get into all that I will lose people and im trying to help guys that just want to learn the ins and outs... I didn't even cover duration and compression ratio etc... im not out to prove how smart I am... I feel that guys that know this stuff down to a science aren't gonna get anything out of this type of video anyway

@@alexstromberg7696 it has to do with the math changing when a circle shrinks and also why different degree wheels can give different measurements... its above my pay grade and it is NOT important... we ain't building space ships its such a microscopic difference its not even worth mentioning... I had it explained a while back and it hurt my brain and I haven't worried about it since... but in the real world... yes it stays the same unless u raise/lower one port and not the other

@@johnscustomsaws yeah i'm quite not a pro and i agree with you when sticking to simple stuff, u can get a saw ripping with just that information that u give us, no doubt. Was just sayin just to let people know something of the geek details😗

Thanks for cutaway , your videos are fuckin killer , don’t even look at negativity , keep positive and u will succeed , jealousy is negativity !. Crazy question , what exact degrees are u looking for for more torque , and what degrees will give more higher revs . What’s determining the results ? , and what swish and port heights are kinda ideal ?
@johnscustomsaws
@johnscustomsaws 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man I appreciate it... for squish .020" is where I would run it... If you want a torque saw you will want to keep your exhaust low so around 101-102... And if you want a scream or machine machine on a 661 you would want to go around 98 I wouldn't go any higher than that on this particular saw just because of the way that it's laid out... But if we were talking an 044 or something like that you could go 96... It's all relative man it's such a is such a Loaded question and never ending answer on how to build these saws... Where to set your intake where to set blow down etc... it just goes on and on
