Recorded in 2006 as part of our debut album Music for Compline, this sublime work remains a firm favourite of the group, both for its beauty and for the rewarding challenges it poses in performance.
'Miserere nostri, Domine', for seven voices, is an amazing display of Tallis's skill as a composer. It is a 'canon six in two' - six of the seven voices are used to create two different canons. The first canon is between the two uppermost lines, two beats apart. The second canon involves four of the remaining voices simultaneously: the melody in the third part is sung at quarter-speed by the fourth part, upside-down and at half-speed by the lowest part, and upside-down and at one eighth-speed by second lowest part. Only the fifth voice is freely composed.
