POSTMORTEM report on Stilfontein miners is out.
The postmortem report proved that the illegal miners are dying because of hunger and starvation.
This after Mining Affected Communities United in Action (Macua) presented the media with the postmortem report in Stilfontein, North West on Monday, 13 January during a media briefing.
The organisation also released footage sent by those still trapped underground that shows the true extent of the crisis. The footage was released on Friday, 10 January after claims there are 109 bodies trapped underground.
But the police refused to share the footage with the media, stating they're using it for investigations.
“We can confirm that all the people have died of hunger and starvation. It's true that there's also an issue of cannibalism underground. If you remember, there’s a letter that surfaced saying they are feasting on human flesh because there’s no food,” said community leader, Thembile Botman.
He said he believes the claims are correct as it was also confirmed by an illegal miner who resurfaced that they've been eating bodies for survival.
General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa) president Mametlwe Sebei said what happened in Stilfontein needs to be called "Stilfontein massacre".
“The footage shows a pile of human bodies of miners who died needlessly. This is a culmination of policy perused by government in their police operation,” he said.
He further accused the state of depriving the illegal miners food, water and medication. “In the past three weeks when the situation was already dire in terms of shortages, miners didn’t have food for 13 days,” he said.
South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) spokesman, Mzukisi Jam said they have been pulling people out.
