Still can't swallow pills? Try this!

I know most people can swallow pills with no problem but until a week ago I couldn't do it all. I can't be the only person on Earth who had this problem, so here's my effort at trying help others with the same issue.

I am 21 and it's still so hard for me to injest a pill just like my mom. My dad has always been unable to understand it. However my mum figured out a way and it works! Put a bite in your mouth of a bread or anything edible that you like, chew it but do not swallow it. Just before you are about to take that chewed food in, place your pill on the food and swallow it along the bolus (chewed food) ... it makes injesting pills alot easier! Your brain thinks you're just eating food and doesnt block it so its all psychological!!

I'm 49 and have had trouble swallowing pills my entire life. I've been on various medications for the past 20+ years (at one time I was taking 18 medications a day) and most of the time I've either had to chew, allow them to dissolve or break apart capsules and ingest the contents of the capsule. Yes, I know it's "all in my head" but it's simply not that easy to just get over it and do it. Now, I am on 3 medications a day, all about as small as a Sudafed/birth control pill and most days I manage to talk myself into swallowing the pills, one at a time. Most days I let them dissolve because I just don't have the energy to fight myself over this. Thank you for sharing this method. It's one I tried about 25 years ago and damn near made myself puke.

Okay, I have some tips for you guys. First of all, the tip in the video is very good! I suggest you guys train a little bit, try and brush the very back of your tongue when you're brushing your teeth, it's going to make things a lot easier. Second, it's always recommended to eat something before swallowing pills otherwise you might have a stomach ache. I suggest you already start training while eating, to start swallowing bigger portions of food and being aware of it. And third, the one that helped me the most: one of the top comments here is by a guy giving AWESOME advice to learn how to swallow pills. The secret is to be fully aware of your swallowing mechanism. How do your throat and tongue move to send the water down? I've seen a lot of people having the same problem that I do: They're terrified of choking. Thus, your tongue, knowing you think you're gonna choke, will work as to not let you swallow anything but water. Try and notice what exact movement your tongue does to make that happen and do your best to work AGAINST that movement. This is how you're gonna find out your very own secret to swallow your medicine. There is no such thing as a specific method for everyone, since everyone's throats are different. Let's use my case as an example: I realized the back of my tongue always moved upwards, not allowing anything but the water to come down and sending the medicine to any other place in my mouth. Also, my teeth always closed, and the pill always slid past them and kept floating on my cheeks. So, I swallowed a couple of gulps trying to work against this movement. My take was to stick my tongue out while swallowing (with my lips closed around it obviously), this way it wouldn't move upwards and my teeth wouldn't automatically close 'cause my tongue was on the way. When I mastered this movement, I filled the cup again and lied the pill on the very back of my tongue, did this and with only one gulp that little bitch was already sliding down my throat! I was actually really surprised, I didn't think it would work, but it did :) This was the first pill I've successfully swallowed in over two years. It wasn't so big, I don't think I'm still prepared to take bigger pills such as vitamins, but we all have to start from somewhere ^^

I'm a senior and I still can't swallow pills or capsules. As a child, I got a large pill stuck in my throat and it took many days for it to dissolve. During that time, I could only sip small amounts of soup and milk. In the 80s, I got a pill stuck in my throat, couldn't exhale, had to be rushed to the hospital where they anaesthetized me and performed surgery (froze throat, extracted pill) to remove the pill which had stuck to the side of my throat. I was in an oxygen tent (and IV) for a couple days to help soothe my throat from the irritation. I've never attempted to swallow a pill or capsule since.

This is actually the technique I use. My throat tenses up at the thought of swallowing pills. I have really bad menstrual cramps so I literally have to choose between choking and crippling cramps. Both if I end up throwing up. I never get the pill down smoothly, I always end up choking it down. The taste and sensation really trigger my gag reflex something crazy, I don't know what to do. Putting my pills in tea works but it's slower.

I've had the same problem forever until one day that I came up with the fix for it. I would try to swallow different pills over and over until I've gagged so many times that I just couldn't do it anymore. And now to the thing that changed it. First we need to understand that not being able to swallow pills is only in our minds. Think of it like this: try analyze how much you chew when eating a normal meal, and when you swallow the food next time you eat. What you will notice most of the time is that you swallow a lot larger chunks of food than you might think. If you compare the size of the chunk of the food you swallowed to the size of the pill, the pill is super tiny in comparison. When you ate that burger lets say, there was no problem swallowing that big of a chunk. No choking or gagging. So the first conclusion is that the things you eat and swallow on a daily bases are alot larger than the pill that you want to swallow. So why can't some of us not do it? I think its because our mind associate swallowing pills with something scary or unpleasant, choking or the pill getting stuck etc. The technicues I came up with is: 1: Eat anything that needs to be chewed. And chew it until you almost get the urge to swallow it, put the pill in your mouth and focus on the feeling of wanting to swallow the food you just chewed. Then you swallow it! And drink something, easy! If your mind gets stuck on feeling the pill in your mouth, take out the pill and do it again. The important thing with this method is to do it pretty fast so that your mind cant wander into thinking to much about the pill, more about wanting to swallow the food. Method 2: If the first method did not work for you, try this one. First put the pill in your mouth and start dragg it back on your tounge with your upper teeth as far as you can. Then when the pill is as far back on your tounge as it will go, simply drink water and you wont even feel it. Why this method is good I think is because your gag reflex wont activate as easily and most importantly you dont feel the pill floating around in your mouth like if you were to try swallow it the traditional way, causing you to be even more stressed. Today with the use of the methods above, and training my mind to get rid of the scary unpleasant feeling of swallowing a pill, I have no problem at all swallowing a pill :D Hope anyone found this helpful! :D

I watched many videos on how to swallow pills and it didn’t work. ( yes Dora didn’t know how to till now ) All I did was make a spoon like thing with my tongue. Put the pill on the spoon like tongue thing. Put water lean back a bit and I swallowed it. I’m still shook that I did it. I don’t know if it works for others but it works for me. I have heard this method works: Take a small slice of a banana . Chew it nicely. While the mix or whatever it is called is in your mouth put a pill in your mouth and gulp it down . It will most probably go. I haven't tried it yet but I will . Still recommending. You never know what can help!

What I did is first start with some small candies you try to get them at the back of your throat with a small drink of water and take another sip to push it all the way down practice with different size candies getting bigger and bigger than you practice swallowing them faster make sure you stay calm because it is much harder to swallow them so just relax

I’m only 11 and my doctor gave me 4 medicines one is water and then the other three are pills it’s because I have something in my stomach I guess so the first one is 2 in the morning and 2 in the night the second one is 1 in the morning 1 in the night and the third one is the same as the second one 1 in the morning and 1 on the night 😢 why does this have to happen to me
