Totally agree with you. It's a lovely story, and one I can't help recommending to everyone I know. One of the best aspects of listening to it is that the author, Sarah Winman, is also the narrator. So you get exactly the inflection, accents and attitudes she intended when she wrote it. I adore Claude, the Kid, and the Elderly Contessa. I've spent a lot of time in Florence, but this makes me want to revisit and bring friends.

Do you know why there seems to be a trend toward no "speech marks" as you say?? I've read one book where this was the case and I thought it was unnecessarily confusing.

You do get used to it. “No speech marks” is common in translated fiction for some reason, and after reading a lot of books in translation I don’t even notice it.

I love whimsy! I love Florence and London. I was just on holiday in Florence and London. I was so excited to read this. And so disappointed. Very boring book and the characters were characters and not real people

I haven't read this one yet but I've heard about it before. Not on my Kobo yet but I'll start searching. Thanks for another great tip!

I’ll do a little round up at the end of the year. For my favourites of all time…I’ll need to really think.

I loved this book, but I love Florence as a city, so I thought that this might have been a big part of my enjoyment. Please tell me whether you have ever been to Florence? If not, that means that the book is even better!!
