Thank you for uploading, Shaolin! This is such a beautiful song! I love that soulful voice of Levi Stubbs! There's 100% gospel influence here. The melody kind of reminds me of the old spirituals of the plantation era, sounds a bit like what you'd hear from (not intending to controversial in any way) the slaves singing out in the fields, echoes coming back. A bit of trivia about this song; it was co-written and co-produced by Smokey Robinson (the original lead singer of The Miracles) and Frank Wilson. After doing a bit of research about the making of this song, I've since found out that the association with The Miracles didn't stop with authorship and production by Smokey; in addition, it features Marv Tarplin on guitar (who also played guitar on virtually all songs by The Miracles). Co-writer and co-producer, Frank Wilson played the tambourine. Another musician famous as a singer in his own right, the one-and-only Stevie Wonder, played the Hohner Clavinet keyboard, which was an instrument Stevie was well known for playing, one of his most notable performances on that instrument was "Superstition". The remaining instrumentation was by a group of studio musicians called "The Funk Brothers", who for this recording, included Earl Van Dyke on the Hammond B-3 organ, James Jamerson on bass, Uriel Jones on drums, Jack Ashford on vibraphone, and Bobbye Hall (secretely known as "The Funk Sister", being the only female musician associated with the group; I knew that Bobbye Hall played with numerous artists, including James Taylor, Bill Withers, Carole King, and Stevie Nicks, but I had no idea that Bobbye Hall played on any Motown recordings, and as a matter of fact, this isn't the only Motown recording on which she played, other Motown recordings on which Bobbye Hall played include The Temptations "Sorry is a Sorry Word" and "I Can't Get Next to You", Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" and "Let's Get It On", and Diana Ross/The Supremes "Someday We'll Be Together") on percussion. The female voices were performed by Motown backup vocalists, The Andantes, as well as Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans, who later became members of a group called The Undisputed Truth, who were famous in their own right. David Van De Pitte was the arranger for the string and brass instruments. This song is a real gem! Again, thank you for uploading!
